Johnny Weir: Offensive Comments ‘Pissed Me Off’Posted on Feb 25, 2010
“I felt very defiant when I saw these comments,” U.S. figure skater Johnny Weir said at a press conference Wednesday in response to two Canadian sports announcers who questioned his masculinity and suggested he was a bad role model for his sport. Weir added, “I think masculinity is what you believe it to be.” —KA AP via YouTube: Advertisement Previous item: Inside the Health Care Huddle Next item: ‘Left, Right & Center’: Health Care Huddle, Goldman/Greece New and Improved CommentsIf you have trouble leaving a comment, review this help page. Good one!
Weir said, “...masculinity is what you believe it to be.”
I say, “Idiocy is what you believe it to be.”

It never even occurred to me that this controversy would arise. Took me by
Report thissurprise. I enjoyed Weir’s performance last year (2009) in the U.S. Nationals, and
this year (2010) in the U.S. Nationals and the Winter Olympics. Top-notch,
imaginative, creative skater and performer.

I have always thought of Canadians as being progressive
Report thisin their social attitudes. The backwardness of the
comments from the the sportscasters surprised me.
Maybe they are from Saskatchewan and don’t get out
much. In the US where half of all professional and
amateur athletes are gay they may have lost their jobs.

Mr. Weir, I am inspired and immensley proud of the classy, insightful and intelligent manner in which you are dealing with the woefully crude and ignorant remarks of some pathetic detractors. You are a bright and inspiring role model for all young men who are culturally imprisoned by gender roles and prejudices. I have three sons and would have been so happy if they would have had such a friend as you when they were growing up. THANK YOU and heartfelt best wishes…

Mr. Weir, I’m the mother of two heterosexual kids, but I’d be proud to have you as a son. You’re sweet, smart, and all-around adorable.

Good for you, Mr. Weir. Talk about a role model! Isn’t it refreshing to listen to the thoughts of a young person that are more than just a parroting of what he/she hears from their peers, parents, school, religion?
The more the homophobes beak off about the “Johnnys” of the world, the more we learn about THEM. When will all this useless, stupid bigotry and prejudice end?
