John Oliver’s ‘Last Week Tonight’ Asks, ‘How Is Dressing Up Like Another Race Still a Thing?’

Posted on May 13, 2014
Screen shot/YouTube

No, Cinco de Mayo is not an excuse to wear a taco costume, and yes, it’s offensive. But a lot of people in the media and beyond seemed to have missed this crucial message, from news reporters wearing sombreros and drinking tequila on their shows to celebrate a holiday they have no clue about (the 5th of May is the anniversary of the Battle of Puebla when the Mexican military defeated the French forces invading their country in 1862, for those of you who were wondering) to celebrities and frat boys dressing in blackface as Ann Coulter brazenly denies racism exists.

Watch this hilarious voice-over segment that asks in a deeply serious tone, “How is this still a thing?”
