Israeli-British Relations Hurt by Arrest WarrantPosted on Dec 15, 2009
British Foreign Secretary David Milliband and other U.K. diplomats took some serious heat from Israeli officials after an arrest warrant was issued in London earlier this week for Israel’s former Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni (at right), accusing her of committing war crimes against Palestinians during last winter’s war in Gaza. —KA Al Jazeera English via YouTube: Advertisement Previous item: Re-Volt-ing Dance Could Make You Go Blind Next item: ‘Colbert Report’: Joining the Conservative Gold Rush New and Improved CommentsIf you have trouble leaving a comment, review this help page. Alison Weir received death threats as a result of her discussions on the topic of Palestinian/Arab/Israeli conflict.
Click on link below for the rest of the details:
“This past April Weir met with Okrent
who was preparing a column on the
Times’s coverage of Israel/Palestine.
She gave him a 23-page report, along
with approximately 40 pages of documentation
showing the sharp disparity
in how Israeli and Palestinian deaths are
reported in the “newspaper of record.”
In this issue of The Link Weir tells
what resulted from that meeting. She
also reports on how other leading news
outlets cover the Palestine/Israel conflict.
Alison came to our attention back in
2003. In October of that year, after participating
in a debate at the University of
California at Berkeley, she received a
death threat on her answering machine
warning her and her coworkers not to be
in their office at 2 p.m. the next day. At 1
p.m. on that day, Weir went to her office,
escorted by Berkeley police who first
had made a sweep of the building and
neighborhood. She was still there, without
police protection, at 2 p.m.”

The Impunity of Israel and its Allies Will Carry a Price
Outrage over Tzipi Livni’s arrest warrant would be better directed to the suffering of Gaza and the risks of a new eruption
By Seumas Milne
“December 18, 2009 “The Guardian”—When evidence of war crimes is produced, you might expect states that claim to defend the rule of law to want those crimes investigated and the perpetrators held to account. Not a bit of it. The decision by a London judge to issue a warrant for the arrest of Israel’s former foreign minister Tzipi Livni over evidence of serious breaches of the laws of war in Gaza has sparked official outrage in Britain.
The court’s behaviour was “insufferable”, foreign secretary David Miliband declared. The Times called it “repugnant”. Gordon Brown yesterday assured Livni that action would be taken to ensure no such thing ever happens again.
As it turned out, Livni had cancelled her visit and the warrant was withdrawn. But for the British government, it seems, it isn’t the compendious evidence of war crimes during the Gaza bloodletting – including the killing of civilians waving white flags, the use of human shields and white phosphorus attacks on schools – that is insufferable. It’s the attempt to use the principle of universal jurisdiction Britain claims to uphold to bring to book the politicians who ordered the onslaught.
Of course, it would make more sense if Israel itself held an independent investigation into its soldiers’ conduct in the Gaza war. That was what the UN’s Goldstone report called for, on both sides – failing which, other states should start their own investigations. Instead, Israel is demanding Britain change its laws without delay, and the British government is falling over itself to oblige.”

So, have the Brits issued warrants for Hamas for seven years worth of rockets shot into Israeli civilian areas? Have some of you posters screaming about apartheid also protested against the apartheid practices of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and the Palestinians—all of whom refuse to allow Jews to own land or become citizens? Do you plan to criticize Egypt for beginning to build a massive steel wall along its Gaza border because they too don’t want the Gazans? I didn’t think so.

Let’s hurt Israeli-American relations by issuing arrest warrants for all IDF officers above corporal, all Ministers and higher in the government, banning all cultural/educational/industrial exchanges, withdrawing all foreign aid to Israel (most Americans think foreign aid is for poor countries, they still don’t know the amounts Israel gets), boycotting all things Israeli (no business allowed at all).
Now that’d be a start.

Well, the Soup-for-Brains Brits have distinguished themselves yet again by attacking the only Israeli politician who not only urged a complete freeze on settlements but also wanted to negotiate with the Palestinians to share Jerusalem. The Likudists must be really enjoying this one.
Lorenzo, you asked a good question but got the predictable Truthdig answer. But take heart: perhaps someone someday will indict all the imperialist countries for slaving, murder and other crimes on which the Brits and other Euros battened for centuries. Now just to show their politically correct chops they ignore Robert Mugabe who turneed British-ruled Zimbabwe into Starvation Land. (Wonder what they did to make Mugabe such a monster?)
Britain is not all bad. Her only two redeeming features however are powerful: 1) the British Museum and Library, and 2) George Eliot, the great woman writer whose mid-19th-centuryh novel “Daniel Deronda” portrayed the idealistic Zionists going back to Palestine with a rabbi friend of Eliot’s who happened to live in Palestine and had returned to England just to conduct another shipload of Jews homeward. (England was horribly anti-Semitic in Eliot’s day as well as much earlier and consistent through her history. ..)
Hope they all choke in their smoke-filled pubs .. but no such luck. They stagger along. Kind of like

tizzie lizzie the bitch of izrael and top mid east terrorist.
Quaint how izrael and the u.s. are immune from any kind of
action to hold those in either country accountable for their
war crimes which means for the world to heal and set a course
for a better future, just like the attack of 9/11, until
everything is investigated about this nothing will change and
both countries will continue to force most of the rest of the
world to abide by their rules.
Also, where are the spanish on their investigations and arrests
for any and all that illegally attacked and invaded sovereign
nations?

Arresting Livni is fine and good.
But what about Blair?
What about Bush, Hillary, Powell, Rumsfeld? Feith? Kissenger? Cheney? What about the death squad leader now in charge of the Afghanistan caper, McChrystal?
And what about Obama???
Selective prosecution is a legitimate challenge to the decision to prosecute. A war criminal is a war criminal.
It feels good to threaten Israeli thugs, but it won’t go anywhere until the rich white boys can take a fall, too.

I’m thrilled to learn that Milliband has issued a warrant was issued Livni, as it was her direction that caused the horrible crimes against Palestinian women, children, hospitals, and innocents. And Israel propagandized everything as usual through their spokesmen. Al Jazeera was on the ground in Palestine, documenting the use of phosphor bombs on children, the use of devastating firepower on hospitals and innocents.
Yes, Livni should be at the Hague, under indictment, and I applaud the UK’s Milliband for trying to bring this about.

Why is anyone surprised at this? The Brits have a long, long, long history of stabbing their wartime allies in the back after the war ends, not to mention all the promises they made to gain assistance when they needed it, promises that were promptly forgotten after the cease-fire. The British government has done so many rotten things to the Isrealis over the years I’m astonished Isreal’s government will even talk to them.
