How the FDA Monitored Whistle-Blowing Scientists

Revelations that the FDA monitored its own scientists in the acts of disclosing alleged wrongdoing marks “the first time [that] we … have a glimpse into what domestic surveillance of whistle-blowers looks like in this country with the modern technological developments,” says attorney Stephen Kohn (at right).

With computer spyware, the agency monitored the scientists’ emails and even watched individual messages being written line by line. A number of the scientists were fired in retaliation and the agency created an enemies list containing the names of members of Congress, journalists and others the scientists contacted.
