Hegemonic Pretzel Ad Provokes Subversive Repurposing

pretzel jamming

One would think that advertisers would be done remixing American aristocrat Wallis Simpson’s highly problematic old saw, “You can never be too rich or too thin,” but then one would be mistaken.

The latest product to invoke this aspirational adage—or rather, half of it—is Snack Factory’s Pretzel Crisps. This strategy clearly did not sit well with one New York City resident, who decided to talk back to the ad and use it as a backdrop for a pointed discussion about how, in fact, it is possible to be too underweight and what the costs thereof can be.  —KA

Update: Score one for the crusading NYC pretzeljammer—and the blogosphere—as Snack Factory has elected to swap out the offending ad for one that can’t be construed as “thinspiration.”

I have to agree with the video. It was not the right tag line to use for an advertisement that is going to be shown all over the country. Yes it has double meaning but the other meaning is simply not cool. ;(

Your right poor writing they should have said
“YOUR NEVER TOO FAT FOR A PREZEL”
However you get shit on for saying bad about fat, anything, Miss Piggy is not fat, she fluffy!Role models like Shreck, Simpsons make fat look funny.
But too thin is too deadly. And I agree that idea your never too thin, Holocaust images, Twiggy dying,mal-nutrition in Africa, babies skin and bones, well here is another
YOUR NEVER TOO STUPID TO BE HUMAN!

Perry,
Go spin your brand rep nonsense somewhere else, please.  We know what you’re

We appreciate the feedback received from the blog community.  We are now headed in a new direction with our ad campaign and will be removing the “you can never be too thin” ads and replacing them. The ironic thing is that our website and Facebook page are all about eating.  We talk about pairing our product in different ways for appetizers.  We want people to eat.  We in no way advocate unhealthy weight loss or want to promote a bad body image. We apologize for any offense it caused. - Perry at Pretzel Crisps

Yeah, let’s blame fat people for the world’s ills. Let’s see, the lower classes are the fattest, so lower-class Americans are responsible for people going hungry in Africa and Asia. Huh?

Personally, I love the big fat pretzels, but the last thing we have to worry about is Americans becoming too thin. Those who starve themselves to death are sick and need help. Thankfully, they are few and far between. Many more in this country die prematurely or suffer from ill health because of over eating and indolence, while our over-consumption contributes to hunger in other parts of the world. A pretzel ad won’t change things either way.

You missed a chance to use Steely Dan’s Pretzel Logic
in your headline.

Oh well.
