In a newly available interview, Truthdig’s Chris Hedges sits down with filmmaker Michael Moore and poignantly argues that capitalism is driving humanity’s downfall. Moore conducted the interview for his latest movie, “Capitalism: A Love Story,” but eventually cut it from the documentary.

Where are you going with statements like Michael Moore’s “... a country founded on genocide” -  and your statement: “ … We think in the industrialised world that we are not overpopulated but that’s only because we consume such a disproportionate share of the world’s resources resources 25%  -we as Americans consume 25% of the world’s Petrol.” ?

The Country was founded on the Declaration of independence which set no weak political standard for human rights and individual dignity. We consume 25% of the world’s mined resources. Through genius and high standards of design, communication and economy teams of multi-cultural Americans have developed and excelled it’s industries, technologies and infrastructures to exhume, refine, transport and utilise these resources for the standard of living you and I exploit and enjoy daily, from the no glare lenses on our faces to the micro mega storage devices we plug in and out of all our digital equipment. Will you abandon any of those conveniences, Mr. Hedges, put away all the high tech toys and live in a pre industrial candle light setting in peace with the Amish who earned the right to speak especially when their children were massacred? Gandhi did.

I actively strive to create an economically scaled back, ecologically sound pre industrial yeoman farm setting and household here in Summit, NY,  and still,  I easily consume my 25%  compared to my counterparts in Third World nations. You will never defeat poverty with more poverty but with industry, accord and integrity.

A wise man once said two words that cured my judgemental and hypocritical attitude; “Do it!”

Here is Michael Moore’s movie, “Capitalism: A Love Story”, which at the end makes a fairly good statement that Jesus was not into conservatism.

The Ponzi Scheme is corporate Capitalism supported by tax payer funds when they fail. That is a form of fascism, at least in the economic realm. When it is in the political realm it is fascism all the way. Many flavors of that too exist.

Thanx for the other interview! Saw him on CNN with Wolf Blitzer it is was good and long.

Hedges Talks Capitalism in Michael Moore Interview

Hedges displays the same naivete quoting the UN as he
does when he attributes the increase in the Oligarchs
wealth to supply-side economics.
The population of the world will be dramatically less
by 2050 because the fascists controlling the world
are starving to death about one billion
people each year. The ethanol hoax is having a
dramatic effect since a
major source of food is being wasted on an
inefficient alternative to petroleum instead of real
alternatives such as wind, solar & geothermal.
The “MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE”, the ONE PERCENT ,
control the government, and the FED. Outsourcing jobs
& manufacturing, along with perpetual wars have
enslaved America in a debtor’s abyss.
Furthermore, using Al Gore’s scam instead of
Bush3’s reign of destruction, was, IMO, a big mistake
& lost opportunity.
I’m surprised that Michael Moore gave what he cut to
RAW STORY instead of just leaving it on the floor.

The problem is Free-market Fundamentalism, not
Capitalism.  Many conservatives want zero regulation, i.e. market anarchy.

Societies can apply common-sense regulation to meet certain goals and then let the Market work its magic to meet those goals.

For example, we raise fuel economy standards for
automobiles, and the automakers compete to meet those standards - a win-win for everybody.

The regulations create a level playing field (irresponsible players don’t out-compete responsible players) while societies
meet their democratically determined goals.

First we must recognize the religion of Free-Market Fundamentalism as the false god that it is and replace it with reason.  Fundamentalism in all forms is a crutch to avoid critical thought.

No offense Chris, I love your aticles and all of that, but that interview it’s just… really, really bad and quite frankly I’m not surprised it was cut. You should definitively pratice your speech techniques a bit.

It is the rampant, rapacious unfettered corporate capitalism that is the problem. Once it is under reasonable restraint,  we end the plunder an blunder economy, it can help us all. But until then it will be and is a continuing danger. Wouldn’t you say GoRightYoungMan?

BAGHDAD — Defying a sustained barrage of mortars and rockets in Baghdad and other cities, Iraqis went to the polls in strength on Sunday.

Hedges and Moore got rich and fat while fully immersed in a capitalist system.  The petulant whining these two are engaged in is an embarrassment.

I believe my comment said:

“from the mid 20th century to the
early 20th century from 2,000,000,000 people to
6,500,000,000 people so another 50 years of exponential
growth would top out at 18,000,000,000 people by 2050 IF
the natural resources would be there, but it won’t.”

and that was copied and pasted.

Notice I declared at the end of that copy and paste ‘BUT IT WON"T’
but if the population remains ‘unfettered’ then by 2050 it will not
be unreasonable to have 15,000,000,000 to 18,000,000,000
people, but as I said in my first comment:
IT WON’T!

You or I can’t fortell what the human population will be in 2050
but until there is a stop or reduction in the population it will
continue to grow exponentially and not just double every 50
years.

Hedges does NOT say the “population will double”.

He does say that overpopulation is a problem, but don’t worry about it. He goes on to say that the ‘size of the planet will double, by 2050’!

That is good news, think of all the new land the Capitalist Pigs can exploit…

Here is the quote: “...Overpopulation is also an issue. The UN estimates that by 2050 the size of the planet will double.”

Sorry guys, I giggled when I read that and was amazed that it is the primary topic in the comments.

As if capitalism, or any other system, is some hermetically sealed entity.  Capitalism, not too long ago, declared the victor over communism, another not so sealed system, comes in many flavors but only a moron would blame the system.  Now the people running it into the ground, the kleptocrats, that’s a different story.  It’s amazing how some seemingly smart people can be so utterly idiotic and allowed to post their dribble for others to read, others who haven’t the snap, crackle or pop to figure out it’s all a shell game.  Eliminate white collar prisons and say no to the two party system and you will see a system that may just pay its bills when they’re do and quit living on stolen money.

Private capitalism is driving humanities downfall.  There are other forms of capitalism that would not drive the downfall of humanity, but the capitalists would not be able to distribute the wealth of the nation among the wealthy capitalists.  Therefore the wealthy private capitalists are against any other form of capitalism, other than private, but it is time to be putting the nations infrastructure and our country’s populace needs ahead of strictly wealthy private capitalists concerns.

The Chinese did it in their authoritarian way that still extolled the male over the female. Now they have too many males which could slow it down. As they become more prosperous they can impose a child tax. The more you have the more you pay. If you adopt you get paid, but if you are doing for the money alone it could be very bad for you.

The problem is we still have huge amounts of coal and methane to use.  [Some say as much as 200-500 years worth.] Both produce GHG’s which will continue to turn our planet into an inhospitable one for most of us. Just the top 10-11% will live at the utmost of the technology and luxury, well protected by a thick blue line of paramilitary guardians.

What we don’t do for ourselves Nature will do and she is a harsh mistress. We can have empathy, there is nonesuch for natural forces. Just pure mechanical, mathematical actions. We are quickly running out of time to mitigate what will happen. The longer we wait the harder it will be to fix it to the optimum we have had for 5,000 or so years.

Back in the 1930’s Henry Ford demonstrated that a car could be almost 3/4ths constructed from non-hydrocarbons, from the plastic body to the lubricants and fuel. He called it “Chemurgy.”

The slogan is “Get us off of foreign oil” when it should be “Get us off oil & coal.” But the present Capitalist system supports the same old domination and subsidy of CONG. CONG rules. Let us say yes to a Carbon Tax. Subsidy for clean industries only.

The chinese have tried population control with a large sample population, and have thus far failed miserably(and they are really trying)

The earth seems crowded with nearly 7 billion people. Imagine what it will fell like with 10, 12 or even 20 billion?

Wait, that’s not going to happen. For the bounty of the earth is begining to run out out. Imagine civilization without petroleum byproducts. No gas, oil, or plastics. No mass food production, no way to deliver it anyway. No roads, no cars, no way to deliver energy to the masses.

Many a science fiction writer has postulated over the years that we will actually de-evolve as a society as our population explodes. Evidence of this is already apparent in many areas (including the US) We may be just a generation or two from burning coal to heat our homes (until it runs out) and reading by candlelite. And being shot at by our neihbors because they think we have food. You know, the good ‘ol days.

You had to go to yet another link to read the transcript. I think that Hedges meant we would need another earth to fulfill the needs of so many people in 2050. That is at the same living conditions for 2/3rds of the populace as now. (If everyone now was brought up to the living level an consumption it would take 4 more earths right now!)

KDelphi, care to elaborate?

The population will never reach 9-10 billion (which are the projections, not 18 billion samosamo) because by then the food supplies will have been depleted, mass starvation, drought, flooding, heat waves, freezing, overall climate alterations, one or more diseases run rampant etc. would have taken care of that. Not even counting the wars both global and civil that will have occurred or be ongoing. Way too optimistic to be real extrapolations.

kt2kelly your advocacy against flue vaccinations guarantees the population will decline. You have no basis for your fear. These days we should be having parties for those who die and living funerals for those who are born. We should have a child tax. Everyone procreated to be taxed. None you don’t pay the tax and if you adopt you get money (under tight controls of course) would start getting into people’s heads that this isn’t 1800.

Damn, where is this WHOLE interview because I want to know
how anyone came up with the human population, at least that
is what I inferred by Hedges last remark, would double by
2050?

Hell, it grew exponentially from the mid 20th century to the
early 20th century from 2,000,000,000 people to
6,500,000,000 people so another 50 years of exponential
growth would top out at 18,000,000,000 people by 2050 IF
the natural resources would be there, but it won’t.

I would say that even now a serious ‘depletion’ of humans has begun and 2050 is far too far into the future for anyone much less those terrorist hedge fund speculators to predict. Remember, the beginning and the duration of the last glacial period never had any relevance to those who lived it and they sure aren’t around to hold our hands.

The ice age cometh, maybe sooner than later and science
can’t do much more than keep reporting the change.
