Henry Giroux Gets Urgent With Bill Moyers

Posted on Nov 22, 2013
Moyers & Company

Truthout and Truthdig contributor and revolutionary firebrand Henry Giroux appeared on “Moyers & Company” on Friday to play the role of cultural pathologist and make the crises of global capitalism and democracy blindingly clear.

Key to Giroux’s message is the sense that before commerce is even considered, citizens are obligated to maintain a society that serves everyone. “A citizen,” he says “is a political and moral agent who in fact has a shared sense of hope and responsibility to others and not just to him or herself. Under [the present] system, democracy is basically like the lotto. You know, go in, you put a coin in, and if you’re lucky, you win something. If you don’t, then you become something else.” Something else involves lives of varying but darkening shades of material, social and spiritual misery.

Read the transcript of the encounter between Giroux, who holds the Global TV Network Chair in English and Cultural Studies at McMaster University in Canada, and Moyers here.
