Not a Sparkling Day for Newt

GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich started his week on the wrong foot with ill-advised TV tirades and a huge Tiffany tab, but the glitter on the cake came Tuesday when a gay rights advocate dumped a bag of the stuff on Gingrich and his wife, Callista. They were signing books at an event in Minneapolis when the culprit struck, saying, “Feel the rainbow, Newt. Stop the hate. Stop anti-gay politics. It’s dividing our country and it’s not fixing our economy.” Gingrich’s joking response: “It’s nice to live in a free country.” —KDG

New and Improved Comments

We are launching a major overhaul of our comments section.

In addition to more robust spam filtering and moderation, new features include the ability to rate other comments, sort how they are displayed and respond directly via e-mail or in a thread.

Unfortunately, commenters will lose their existing Truthdig identities. It's a pain, we know, but on the plus side you will now be able to log in with a plethora of options, including Google, Twitter, Facebook and Disqus accounts.

Before launching this system we spent months in discussion with our top commenters. We listened to the feedback and we hope you like what we've come up with.

Please direct any problems or concerns to us via our contact page.

“I fail to see how this was an effective tactic. “

People who saw this will look into the protester’s claim. If it is grounded in truth, they may cast their vote in another direction. I’d say that is very affective.

Notice how the protester was deliberately SHOVED through the doorway by one of the apples that fell from Gingrich’s tree. You can hear it in his voice.

Newt will simply state that glitter-making companies are part of a “European Socialist” conspiracy to destroy our “American way of life.”
