‘Ex-Sniper’s’ Story Misses the MarkPosted on Jan 31, 2012
He called himself an Oakland Occupier and a military vet, and he served up a dramatic first-person story that appeared on Truthdig and elsewhere in the media. But now his mini-essay has been retracted: “Leo Webb” may not exist. On Tuesday, Truthdig’s A/V Booth ran an item featuring a link to an audio originated by American Public Media’s “Marketplace” radio program. (Click here for a transcript.) By Wednesday, “Marketplace” had removed the audio clip from its website, saying that a number of assertions made in the account could not be verified. Webb had claimed that while he was camping at Occupy Oakland he went to a store and found himself in the middle of a shooting in which a man was killed. He went on in the essay to complain about the failure of his dream of becoming a baseball star and about being cast aside by society after he left the Army. Now “Marketplace” says the Army has no record of Leo Webb, nor does the baseball club that he said he had played for. One of the bloggers following this story is The Washington Post’s Erik Wemple, who credits the This Ain’t Hell website with revealing the deception. For the record, with the exception of the audio link, here’s Truthdig’s entire original report: “From Iraq to Rite Aid: A Sniper’s Struggle / Iraq veteran Leo Webb survived a war only to find himself in the middle of a drugstore shootout.” Advertisement

Life will get more interesting and tragic once these returning vets come home and get a chance to ‘pay back’ those who sent them ‘over there’ in the first place.
Is war the only thing America knows how to do.

Well! Like they say, so much doesn’t change that stays the same. Returning vets without a job! Duuh! Hey returning vets without a job, you haven’t even seen the worst yet! Get ready for it, it will be coming real soon. Carl Sandburg asked the question after the Civil War(War Between the State), “When will people stop going to wars other people create?” Clearly not yet! For the Dear Old Red, White, and Blue, eh! Please! Been there! Did that! Though I didn’t volunteer to kill people I don’t know. Drafted and shafted! Does anyone know that if these United States utilized it’s greatest resource, people, most people wouldn’t have to work more than three days a week for three squares, a place to live, a family, and simply enjoying life and having some fun? This is a fact! And hey, the truth of 9/11 still hasn’t come out! We pay the secrets boys what? 40 billion a year, and they dropped the 9/11 ball? Seems to me something stinks here! And now the party who gave us 9/11 want back in the White House? Please tell me the American people aren’t this dumb! So, where are we now? Trillions in debt! One hundred million plus still are loosing their places to live, along with the monies they already paid for their homes. Isn’t this nice! So much for the golden years! The banks were bailed out, and now won’t rewrite the mortgages. why is this? Because the loans were guaranteed by Frannie Mae and Mac. All the banks have to do is to submit their bill and get bailed out again! Who allows this shit? We do! The American people. Send your children to be maimed or killed in the latest war. Sit by and loose your home and jobs. And pay through the nose for health care and gasoline. Something is wrong here! And we are facing a yet another business as usual year of elections! Me! I’m not voting for one of the sobs. Yes, I’m voting. Voting for things that I can have some influence on. The rest will get elected no matter what I do. Can you say term limits through a Constitutional amendment approved by the states? Jsav. PS. for anyone and everyone. You get what you sow! Fact!

Dont’ ever say anything about being “a mess” in the presence of a VA representative. Find a good service officer, one with a reputation for helping (there are lots who really don’t know the ropes) and have that person help you with your communications with them. Many of the holdovers from the last administration are really into punishing people like us, who they think “can’t take it”. Almost all of them have no idea what “it” is like we do. Protect yourself or they’ll label you a bad apple and you’ll never get any help.
On that note—go to your veterans center—not the psych department of the VA Hospital, they won’t do you any good—and get a good experienced counselor to help with your memories and the high alertness that you demonstrate. It’s important for you to come down a little so you can get your life back to what will be your new “normal”. It’ll never be the same—but you can get better. Good luck.

This is one of thousands of similar stories—all tragic, all avoidable and unnecessary.
Half the problem with trigger-happy police firing stuff at protesters is due to remnants of PTSD, a psychologist friend tells me. One of the jobs more available to returning vets than others is policing.
