Dr. Laura Sorry for Airing N-Word BarragePosted on Aug 13, 2010
Dr. Laura Schlessinger is many things, but an astute commentator on racial politics isn’t one of them. The long-running schlock jock removed her foot from her mouth Wednesday to issue an apology for “attempting to make a philosophical point” by repeatedly firing off the “N-word” on her show the day before. Perhaps more shocking than Dr. Laura’s inflammatory outburst is the fact that she’s still on the air. —KA AP via YouTube: Advertisement Previous item: O’Reilly Does Not Approve of Aniston’s No-Man Stance Next item: ‘Left, Right & Center’: How Low Can We Go? And they fired Helen Thomas….
Helen spoke truth.
So called “Dr” Laura spews hatred and vitriol and gets away with a BS apology.
Which gives me the opportunity to commit my offense.
Maybe Laura gets away with it….because Laura is Jewish….
PS…..I am NOT sorry for saying it.

I don’t believe we are still arguing over this word,
as someone said, it’s only as powerful as you make it.
Cris Rock and Eddie Murphy make a good living
telling nigger jokes, on HBO, probably a million
a pop.
I don’t use the word often and never to describe a
race, I don’t feel Rock or Murphy have the right
to choose what they can say and what I can’t say.
I like them both as comedians, even like their
nigger jokes, but like Charlie Murphy better than
his brother and really laugh at Katt Williams who
always has a few nigger jokes.
NIGGER, NIGGER, NIGGER , NIGGER, NIGGER…............

A White Person *can* use the N-word, given the right context and the right
credentials. Molly Ivins wrote a letter dated August 17, 2004, bequeathing her
money to the ACLU. She was suffering from advanced breast cancer and was
acutely aware of her own mortality. She wrote:
“This is why I am going to leave my money to the ACLU. Every time someone on
down the line is irreverent about authority, I’ll have my monument. Every time
some kid who was born a nigger, a kike, a wop, a Polack, a gook, a gimp, a fag,
or just a plain maverick lifts up her head and dares anyone to stop her, I’ll have
my
monument”.
Bless Molly. She was worth a thousand Laura Schlesingers.

I’m white. I don’t think white people can use the “n” word, period. Right or wrong, reasonable or unreasonable, white people just shouldn’t use that word. It isn’t “just a word” in the same way that “shit” is just a word, which is why we use the latter freely, but not the former.
Report thisI don’t use the “n” word for the same reason that I do occasionally tell “Jewish” jokes: I was born Jewish. When I tell a Jewish joke, it pokes fun at a group I understand well, including the stereotypes, which are often true. Laughing at yourself is not the same as laughing at someone else, a distinction that should be obvious, but isn’t for some reason.

The only time I’ve heard white people use the N word and black guys not mind is in porn movies. So some adult model will be skewered and urge her fellow model to do her harder with that big n-word thing of his. But they always seem to end it with ...gga not ...gger. Not that that is significant. It’s more along the lines of when your pants are down and your approaching orgasm it’s not what you say but how you say it that matters. Context is everything. Still I have had several black friends and never once have I referred to them with the N word. I’ll sometimes joke to them that I’m just a Barney Rubble, and that seems to go over fine.
It’s a way of acknowledging that, though we live in the same country, many of come from different cultures. And though it can be a bit awkward at times, as long as everyone knows everyone else is acting in good faith, awkward moments can be smoothed over with a little self-deprecation.
But, yeah, what people have said here about how African Americans or Jews or Italians or the Irish address themselves when among close friends and family is one thing. How other people address them is quite another.
Just remember Dr. Shitbird: If a black guy has his chin on your shoulder and is whispering sweet nothings in your ear, you can use whatever adjectives you prefer to describe his junk. You might end up a little more chaffed in the end than you initially expected. But fair is fair, ya know.
Reminds of a great song that a great singer and dancer once sang: “Just look over your shoulder, honey. Oooh. I’ll be there. I’ll be there.”

As for my prior post, take it for what it’s worth. I meant no harm or ill will towards anyone. Having said that, I feel a bit more tact would have served me well. I don’t see color, although I’m reminded of the varied spectrum of skin color daily.
Report thisFrom my perspective, quite a high percentage of black people exhibit a double standard when it comes to the use of the word. This is America people, the debate over this grows tiresome. The word itself carries such a negative connotation with me, a person of Scottish/Native American ancestry, that I have no use for it. Unfortunately the word is still quite pervasive in today’s American society.
I enjoy Def Comedy Jam. The word is said sometimes (guessing) over 50 times in a 1 hour show. Granted it’s said by black people to a crowd of all different races and it’s taken in stride by all. That’s where the double standard comes in, we as whites, don’t tell blacks what word(s) can be said and what words can’t. Call me honky, white bread, whatever, I don’t care, it’s just a word.
The good Dr. shouldn’t have been persecuted for saying a word that is used daily by millions of the people who are bent out of shape about it. Because she’s white. Talk about double standards. The race card has been shredded.
Bottom line is this, whites don’t go around saying nigger just to be an ignorant, racist, hilljack. Blacks need to quit being so hyper sensitive over everything and playing the obsolete race card whenever whitey does something they don’t like. You make yourselves seem like a bunch of spoiled kids who didn’t get their way. Get the fuck over yourselves.

The N-word is a sensitive word coming from anglos directed toward a non anglo. If a anglo call me that, it depends on my mood at the time how I would respond. When anglos refer to Blacks as a group as n-word, it don’t sting as much because I know they are speaking from ignorance and insecurities or perhaps anger. If they call me the nword on a good day, I will tell them please put “Ms.” on that like if addressing me as a “bitch” both or slanderous. But if I am in a bad mood, I might forget that the illiterate ex-felons who overseen the chattel at the auction block couldn’t say or pronounce “NIGERIAN” or “NIGER” correctly so they called us the n-word for short, and beat the “brakes” off these foolish individual for awakening this dormant undercurrent rage that is associated with our past here in this country. When I say the n-word it is intended as an offense not a term of endearment. I am saying “look what you allowed them to make you become”...and that can be directed at any person of color thats acting contrary to good moral character in there actions at the time even white trash here in the south. So most definitely, this word is not a term of endearment for me as associated for “neo youth culture” who behave contrary to the norms of the dominant cultures. Its a hurtful word for the older generation, used as a derogatory term for misbehaving or a term of endearment for those of the “neo youth culture”. For me it could be “open up a can of whip ass” on depending on my mood.(smile)

When we were living in East Austin our daughter came home from elementary school one day and said something like:
Dad did you know the people I go to school with are black? And when my teacher was little she had to pee on the side of the road because people wouldn’t let her use the restroom?
It was simple. All of our daughter’s friends were African American, and we wanted to teach her to assess people by the “content of their character not the color of her skin” to paraphrase the great Dr. Martin Luther King.
So we simply said things like: Do you see that boy over there with the red shirt? Or something like that. It was a combination of a philosophical choice—to heed the advice of Dr. King—and being practical. If we would have said: You see the black kid over there? She would have said: Which one? We were the minority.
Try it sometime. You will really appreciate it when a member of the majority judges you not by the color of your skin but by the content of your character.

Wow. Cool comments about her quote. I must confess: listening to this recording was the first time I’ve ever heard Dr. Shitbird’s voice.
And it’s okay, Dr. S. I call my dog a shitbird and my wife was fond of calling our daughter a little shitbird when our little angel soiled her diapers.
So it is with only scat affection and dog affinity that I refer to you as shitbird, Dr. Shitbird.
I’m sorry I live in a cave and don’t listen to you. I’m obviously missing precious corn that only a shitbird with its eagle eyes can see and with its turdidae gullet digest.
It’s also beautiful, ya see, because I’m originally from the south and when I go home to visit, there is thinly veiled and not so thinly veiled racism that only a shitbird with her eyes pecked out could miss, Dr. Shitbird.
And suffice to say, excepting a few union workers who vote Democratic out of enlightened economic interest while at the same time brimming with racism, the majority of the racist shitbirds down south are Republicans.
Of course the media can’t acknowledge this because that would entail enunciating what is self-evident and with their neutered objectivity they lack the balls to spy a bird sitting atop a big pile of scat pecking away and proclaim to the world: There sits a shitbird.
Thank you for showing us what a shitbird you and your Republican ilk truly are, Dr. Shitbird.
Apology excepted

Note first that there is a Patrick Henry (not me) and a Pat Henry (me). Our “take” on the world is rather different.
That said, Dr. Laura is mean as a viper. Commenter napolean has it right.. Laura has damaged many people.
My wife and I listened to her on long drives across the western U.S. when the only other choice was Rush. It was painful to us and hurtful to callers.
Someone who was obviously despondent, depressed, unhappy, even desperate and at the end of the line would call for help and advice.
“Dr.” Laura would respond like a drill instructor, belittling the caller, shaming her, adding to her feelings of worthlessness. Laura presumed to make a diagnosis and prescribe cognitive therapy over the radio, without ever seeing the patient.
I lost all respect for her then. The “N-word” flap is but another chapter in her pathetic, misanthropic legacy.

A lot of people don’t get the unwritten rules about this issue. Laura Schlessinger is not alone in her lack of understanding.
It is a human linguistic phenomenon that people within a certain grouping (ethnic, religious, or other), may use pejoratives against their group—usually humorously—without causing offense.
Thus, Jews can say outrageously anti-semitic jokes among themselves, without offending anyone. The same goes for Italians, Latinos, and Swedes (in the rare instances when Swedes can be shown to have a sense of humor).
And yes, blacks can use the N-word among themselves with impunity.
An interesting cultural phenomenon that is not well clarified is using ethnic or cultural insults when someone not of the identified group is present. Thus, it may still be in bad taste for black people (or Latinos or Italians or Swedes) to use the N-word in a mixed white-and-black group, as using it may make the white people uncomfortable. Why are they uncomfortable? Because they are at a cultural disadvantage: black people are “allowed” to use the N-word, but they are not.
Interestingly, two people of different races who are very, very good friends eventually reach a point where they can use the offensive term, just among themselves, and have a good laugh. Be careful! You have to be SURE that you are very, very good friends before you try this!
The best rule to follow is to NOT USE THE OFFENSIVE term unless you are rock-solid sure it is non-offensive in the group you are speaking to.
The N-word, in the context of a nationwide radio talk-show, is always, 100 percent in bad taste. Dr. Laura—especially since she presumes to give advice to people about how to interact with one another—should really have understood this.
I write this post, by the way, to clarify for myself an interesting cultural phenomenon. It reminds me of various languages (Japanese, German, and many others I have studied) that have various grammatical forms to indicate degrees of formality/politeness, versus informality/friendship. In all cases, the rule is: “when in doubt, use the formal term.” This way, you may come off as a bit stiff, but you won’t offend anyone—and they are free to suggest you switch to the informal.
I find these linguistic issues quite interesting.

I throw the BS flag on this one. Blacks can’t get all pissed off because a white woman decides to use the word nigger on her radio show.
Just listen to most hip hop shows or music. It’s thrown around like the word ‘and’ or ‘the’. “My nigga” this and My nigga” that.
All the black people reading this can take that double standard and stick it up your ass!
I’m white and I don’t go around use nigger on a daily, or monthly basis for that matter, but I’ll use it when I want to, because it’s just a word. Just like black people use it as a term of endearment or friendship. Bitch about something else.

even a racist idiot is no barrier to having a successful radio talk show. In fact, it seems

Dr. Laura seems utterly confused about why African-Americans can use the “N” word among themselves but object when it is hurled at them by Whites. Perhaps she suspects she is being left out of an exclusive in-group. Well, Dr. L., you ARE being left out of an in-group! It’s as simple as that. Any sociologist can tell you that insults hurled at minority groups by their oppressors are one thing; the same words used by the minority group members among themselves is a sort of in-group linguistic therapy, a way to “de-power” the oppressors’ word. And no, you can’t use it yourself. Ever. Get over it.
