Illinois Rep. Removed From House Floor After Donning Hoodie for Trayvon MartinPosted on Mar 28, 2012
Members of the New York City Council have worn them. Players on the Miami Heat were photographed wearing them. Numerous celebrities have donned them. And on Wednesday, Rep. Bobby Rush, D-Ill., was escorted from the House floor for wearing one while addressing members of Congress over the killing of Trayvon Martin, the unarmed Florida teenager who was gunned down last month. We’re of course talking about hooded sweatshirts. A hoodie is the article of clothing that Geraldo Rivera claimed was as much responsible for Martin’s death—he was wearing one at the time he was shot—as George Zimmerman, the man holding the gun that claimed Martin’s young life. Rush took to the House floor to call for a full investigation into the shooting death of 17-year-old Martin. “I applaud the young people all across the land who are making a statement about hoodies, about the real hoodlums in this nation, specifically those who tread on our law wearing official or quasi-official cloaks,” Rush said, taking off his suit jacket to reveal a hoodie underneath. “Racial profiling has got to stop. Just because someone wears a hoodie does not make them a hoodlum.” He was gaveled almost immediately by Rep. Gregg Harper, R-Miss., who was presiding over the floor while Rush delivered his remarks. Rush continued to speak until he was eventually removed from the House floor. —TEB Previous item: Overturning Health Care Law Could Be the ‘Best Thing’ Ever for Democrats Next item: Slain Black Veteran’s Son Speaks Out New and Improved CommentsIf you have trouble leaving a comment, review this help page. gerard,
The narrative you offer is highly prejudicial and, well, factually incorrect on several points. What we have are hazy and contradictory possible scenarios. We have yet to learn anything concrete about what happened that day.
A few short months ago you were adamant on how no one is guilty until it is proven. A couple of weeks ago you wrote that in American a person is treated as guilty until proven innocent. Is there something about Zimmerman you don’t care for?

I would respectfully remind IMax that we have a pretty good idea of what probably happened that day, given Florida, nightime, a self-appointed

I would remind Rep. Rush, along with a few commentators here, that we have no idea what happened that day. All we have is a distressing collection of disjointed facts.

What if the Rep. Rush had packed “heat.” After all, there are a huge number of Americans who want to pack heat in every venue possible.

It would have cost nobody nothing to simply permit this slight irregularity under the circumstances and regard the Representative as paying a respectful tribute to the young man who was mercilessly murdered. The error was not in Trayvon’s garment but in Zimmerman’s fearful abroggation of the power to kill. Not to recognize when it is time to honor a breach of formal etiquette is a mark of insensitivity.

Thank you, congressman Rush, for bringing the truth, rarely heard in those
chambers, to the floor of the House.
Many Americans wish to continue their ignorance, their silent consent to the brutal
wrongs being committed every day in America’s streets by both officers and
vigilantes. That road leads to fascism. Is that what we want as a people? If not,
then we need to wake up.
We are all Trayvon Martin.
