American actor Danny Glover, who was in Venezuela monitoring the presidential election, says large numbers of Venezuelans are rejoicing at the prospect of the continuation of social programs that have benefited the public since recently re-elected President Hugo Chavez took office in 1999.

“We spent time talking to people and really understanding the real narrative around what this election means to people,” Glover said. “ ... [P]oor people, people who have been affected by the changes that had happened ... during the time of this regime, people who have been affected by the changes that have happened over the last 13 years. ... [P]eople who talked about increased health care access, also increased education, also the building of co-operatives around chocolate, first of all, and also around bananas. And all of them expressed a sense of pride, a sense of also relief that President Chavez had been re-elected.”
