Dad, I’m Gay

Posted on Sep 20, 2011
Youtube / AreYouSuprised

A 21-year-old U.S. soldier stationed in Germany called his dad Tuesday morning to tell him that he is gay, and he filmed the entire exchange.

The soldier, who had posted videos on YouTube in the past revealing his sexual orientation, showed his face for the first time in the coming-out video, which quickly went viral.

He is one of many military members who decided to “come out” after the official repeal of the military’s 17-year-old “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy.

Watch the intimate moment below.

I am proud both of this boy and his Dad. I am a gay 58 year old man and, even though I don’t personally know this young man, I feel like he is my brother. I love him.

That was a touching to see such a personal and intimate moment. You could sense
the fathers love for him, and his respect for his dad- awesome!

This is a very confused young man. He should be doing what so many other patriotic Americans are doing:  working to rescue our troops imprisoned for the past 40+ years in secret POW camps in Vietnam.  With luck, they will be home for the next Rolling Thunder biker event in Washington, D.C.

What a brave young man! Well done indeed! I do have to question the fact it was done live on Youtube though. What of the father’s right to privacy?  Furthermore, what if, given the gravity of the revelation, the young man’s father reacted in a negative manner? It seems to me that if the conversation had went any other way at all it would have been not only like watching a train wreck happen, but also very off putting for others in a similar situation. One video post on Youtube, despite being well intentioned, could have had the effect of resigning many others to a life in the closet. I am very pleased it did not.

Cool, when I came ooutI was afraid my parents and
brother and sisters would reject me but no they wrapped
their arms around me and said you still are little boy
and our youngest.  I am happy for this guy but the
fight is not over or ever will be for prejudice and
hatred will never cease but we must fight it and be
vigilant.  Especially of the religious fanatic in our
society who use and distort religion to hurt and
persecute.  They are the cancer in America.

Congratulations to this young man. I am glad to see more of this. Being a 68 year old closeted man I am glad to see that he is not going to live his life the way I have.
Thank you for your service and hope and pray that he is returned home safely.

Its funny how when most people “come out” everyone in the room already knew.

Good for this kid, though. living a lie sucks.

Thank you for this ! What a brave and outstanding young man, and an equally cool
father. I hope he makes it home safe and sound, this is the type of person I would
love to see in our corrupt house of representatives ! I hope millions of Americans
are able to see this, It’s touching, funny and most of real something we
desperately need more of in our distorted and manipulated views of life here.
