Many supporters of Bradley Manning and WikiLeaks were unhappy with Academy Award-winning documentarian Alex Gibney’s “We Steal Secrets,” but in a new interview with David Sirota, the director expresses support for the Army private as well as for website Julian Assange.

Criticisms of “We Steal Secrets” include charges of character assassination and the elevation of the government’s side of the story.

In the video below, Gibney tells Sirota that Manning is not a spy, but a source who leaked information to a publisher: WikiLeaks. He says the government is out to get Manning no matter what. As far as the government officials who have a prominent role in his film, Gibney says the leaks by Edward Snowden confirm that those in power are speaking out of both sides of their mouth, claiming a need for secrecy while spying on allies.
