‘Colbert Report’: Lithgow Channels GingrichPosted on May 20, 2011
So, Newt Gingrich might’ve totally blown his Campaign 2012 wad this week by turning on his own kind. It was a disquieting and unacceptable development for large numbers of GOP backers of the former House speaker, many of whom subsequently withdrew their support. Nothing for the Gingrich camp to do but issue an apology, loaded with animosity about the “literati,” which is apparently Newtspeak for members of the liberal media, who “sent out their minions to do their bidding,” which, we suppose, means cackled with elitist glee over his misfortune. And that wasn’t the only overblown bit of prose that the Gingrich campaign unleashed on the world in this indignant press release ... thus rendering the literati even more gleeful, if this well-cast dramatic reading by actor John Lithgow on Thursday’s “Colbert Report” is any indication. Keep it coming, Newt. Aside: What are we to do with the information that the Newtster has an ABBA ringtone? I’ve always loved John Lithgow and this wonderful performance reminded me exactly why. He is an actor who can be tragic, funny and sinister all at the same time - and anything to do with Newt Gingrich is perfect material for J.L.‘s unique skills. The shaking of his head on the word ‘America’ had me laughing so much I nearly forgot to breathe.
