Although Michael Bloomberg and various other media-friendly types made sure to share the same talking points about the recent New York City bomb scare being “amateurish” and “pathetic,” Stephen Colbert would like the alleged perpetrator to know that, actually, it was sufficiently alarming, and please don’t do that again, OK? However, the location of the bomb was fairly non-threatening to the average New Yorker. —KA

We are launching a major overhaul of our comments section.

In addition to more robust spam filtering and moderation, new features include the ability to rate other comments, sort how they are displayed and respond directly via e-mail or in a thread.

Unfortunately, commenters will lose their existing Truthdig identities. It's a pain, we know, but on the plus side you will now be able to log in with a plethora of options, including Google, Twitter, Facebook and Disqus accounts.

Before launching this system we spent months in discussion with our top commenters. We listened to the feedback and we hope you like what we've come up with.

Lucky us the person who tried to perpetrate a bombing in Times Square was poorly trained and equipped. Lucky for us another Muslim saw the smoking SUV and reported it quickly. Otherwise we would have a very different story today wouldn’t we?

Denigrating the attackers simply promote the idea to them to come back stronger and better to get it done. Of course since this isn’t centrally controlled but is free lance it is so much harder to get at. More like spontaneously generated individual cells popping up randomly. Any mathematicians out there to calculate the odds for us? Actuaries are welcome.
