O’Donnell Walks Out on CNN Interview

Email this item Email    Print this item Print    Share this item... Share

Piers Morgan is going to have trouble replacing Larry King if he can’t get his guests to sit sill. Tea party sensation Christine O’Donnell grew increasingly uncomfortable with the CNN host Wednesday, finally walking off the air rather than respond to a question about whether she supports gay marriage.

Left out of this CNN clip is an extended period of awkwardness during which Morgan repeatedly raises O’Donnell’s past comments condemning masturbation. You can see that below (until CNN asks YouTube to take it down).  —PZS

km0591 wrote all that’s necessary to sum up this woman’s situation:

“...immature and impulsive.  She is a hopeless lightweight that is not ready for prime time regardless of how you feel about her politics.”

... with the emphasis on immature.

Where are these airheads coming from and why is the media providing space and time to publish their glib opinions and unsubstantiated assumptions?

Finally! If politicians don’t feel like answering direct
questions on TV, they are better off.  And so would we be.

km0591 seemed to think sexual harassment is OK because it is the norm in
high schools all over the country. Well I’d like to inform him it is different at
work. In the working environment women are not to be treated as sex objects
and there are laws to enforce it.

I find it interesting to see the media act like because a woman is on TV, she has
lost her right not to be sexually assaulted. He repeatedly asked her about
masturbation when it was clearly embarrassing her, she obviously didn’t want
any part of that and said so.

What part of that sexual harassment that he was doing to her was actually
legal? Did filming it make it legal? Was it legal to harass her sexually because
she mentioned sex in a book? I don’t see it. I suppose that makes me
“politically correct” or in other words a wet blanket because I don’t approve of
rape, or it’s precursor - sexually harassing people.

You apologists for this are too much. Like over on TPM the other day, they
thought it would be funny if a blonde woman was murdered. Sure enough a
blonde murdered woman showed up in the news. That is not comedy, that is
sick.

Now km0591 is correct, we don’t protect our children from sexual abuse at
school. I tried and the school very effectively kept me off campus. So, I’d like to
know exactly what km0591 is suggesting. Is he trying to suggest sexual
harassment laws are passe?

Isn’t that just another way of saying that rape is funny?

Rape is not funny, but lots of guys do find it very amusing, titillating.

Also, for the record, I am a witch.

Piers Morgan can be a bit creepy at times, but O’Donnell was there to promote her book in her role as a political figure, so all her past statements and positions are fair game.  If she had done her homework and knew his interview style, she would have been prepared, but she wasn’t.  Her response was like a teenage high school class president becoming miffed after being given a hard time by some of the boys at a class meeting - immature and impulsive.  She is a hopeless lightweight that is not ready for prime time regardless of how you feel about her politics.

I made previous comments but they didn’t address
this article.  It is 4:44 am, EDT.  I can’t sleep.
So I decided to watch the interview.  I agree with
Ms. O’ Donnel.  I think Piers Morgan was rather
rude.  I don’t know why so called extant journalist
want to keep harping on “gay” issues when there are
many other more pressing issues confronting our
nation.  What per cent of Americans are gay?  I don’t
know the latest statistics but my guess is that the
percentage is minuscule.  Piers Morgan, Anderson
Cooper, etc., etc., etc.  They just keep harping
on gay issues.  As a psychologist I’m beginning to
wonder if these individuals are gay and just using
their access to the public to try to justify their
particular life style. That’s exactly what Hollywood
does.  I’m concerned about the influence all this
talk and movies about gays has upon the cognitions
and behaviors of teen-agers during their early
psycho-sexual developmental period. Why don’t these
gay talk-show host address that issue? In conclusion, I agree with “Mancry’s” previous comments about being disgusted with the intolerance, ignorance, and hate displayed by some people on
this site.  I’ve experienced it myself.

I’m shocked at the disgusting level of intolerance,
ignorance and hate displayed here on this Truthdig
article. You people do NOT represent Chris, and I bet
he’d be ashamed to see comments like this on his
website.

How dare you guys come here, of all places, and bring
rhetoric like that into the public eye. This is a
website dedicated to curing these social diseases;
why let them infiltrate?

I am appalled at all the name calling (calling this
lady a vampire? Insinuating she’s a witch?) and it
makes me wonder if you all actually even listen to
Chris and his lectures / debates. He’d never lower
himself to that level, and I think most people would
agree with me when I say you’re being unrealistic,
presumptuous and rude.

In addition: I think it’s utterly disgusting that
people are insinuating that a persons personal views
on masturbation are (as someone stated below me)
“relevant questions”.

This is at a point where I’m starting to feel myself
lowered to a place I don’t want to be simply because
I’m addressing this nonsense. How are we ever going
to fix this country or break down the Empire of
Illusion if we’re all so quick to judge, to label, to
disregard, to distance ourselves, et cetera.

It’s ironic that a lot of the slams being used here
(she’s a witch, she’s a vampire) echo of uncivilized
and brutal times in which ignorance reigned. Behind
closed doors I’d be afraid to see how far the extents
of your vulgarities and hate would drive you, maybe
you wouldn’t be burning her at the stake (regardless
if you’re doing it emotionally and mentally, which,
most of you are doing right now) but I’d wager there
would be some dark extensions of the cruelty
displayed
here.

Where do you all draw the line with your hate? When
is the insulting done? I don’t understand how we’ll
ever evolve behind this state of aesthetic
destruction if even the people who frequent Truthdig
are suffering from the same issues and emotional
problems as those they condemn!

It’s circular social cannibalism, until you’re ready
to step away from the game of musical chairs and stop
throwing out partisan based insults don’t expect
ANYONE to change either.

Good day.

Speaking of “Walking Out” the Truthdig.com Ear To
Ground article on 8-17-11, “Big Tobacco Sues Over
Graphic Labels” didn’t make it to the front page
one day later on 8-18-2011 while the article about
Jodie Foster searching for alien life is still on
the front page after two days.  Wonder why?
My parents both died from smoking Lucky Strike
cigarettes produced by British American Tobacco.
British American is the second largest tobacco
company in the world while being the leader in
sales in 50 countries with a presence in more than
180 countries. The world’s largest company is
Philip Morris International.  Coming in at number
three is Japan Tobacco.  Philip Morris headquarters
happens to be in New York, New York.  There’s that
city again.  The one that was hit by high-jacked
aircraft.  British American Tobacco’s headquarters
happens to be in Great Britian.  Besides the riots
in Great Britian they happen to be experiencing a
little economic woes.  Then, there’s Japan Tobacco.
Didn’t Japan just come through a large earthquake?
Are we seeing a trend?  I could ask why isn’t Washington doing something about injuring people,
especially teen-agers, and eventually killing them globally with American products but that would be
a silly question.  Washington won’t even help people, especially teenagers, in our own country.
Keep searching for alien life Jodie.

I’d call that sexual harassment. The whole point was to embarrass her because
guys like that think it is amusing and will attract ‘eyeballs’.

What a creep. She did the exact right thing.

Interesting. This makes two women involved in the coming presidential campaign who have walked out on their obligations. This isn’t as politically damning as walking out of the Governor’s job in Alsaka in order to chase a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, but it’s indicative of her sense of responsibility none the less. If she were elected president, could we expect her to walk out on important world trade talks because the questions make her uncomfortable?

This is laughable, of course. Following the era of Bush and Cheney—who made it clear that journalists without deference and obedience to the whims of power would find themselves out in the cold, denied access to information and commentary—the media are regaining their mettle, even as bewildered politician-celebrities continue to demonstrate hauteur and petulance at every pointed question, however mild. Clearly Pier Morgan does not understand that, from the point of view of many celebrities and politicians, the media exist merely for the purposes of propaganda and public relations, a service provided for the benefit of important guests, not the popular interest. Relevant questions and substantive reporting are an insult and an outrage to these persons of enormous self-regard. Clearly the message of ideologues like O’Donnell has two distinctly different faces: vitriolic and teeming with bigoted outrage when addressing their base on moral issues, patriotic and reasonable when proposing fiscal solutions to the general population. It demonstrates how Tea Party ideologues wish to be seen: radical to their party, reasonable to swing voters and the general populace. One cannot eat one’s cake and have it too, however; O’Donnell has chosen to walk away with her cake still intact—apparently to serve it to a Republican Women’s Club, which she seems so anxious to attend punctually after weathering the horrific abuses of a polite television interview.

Has this moron ever even watched Morgan’s show? Why
does she think she gets to dictate the subject matter
of his questions?  Why am I asking you?  (Excuse me,
I just channeled Mel Brooks for a moment there).
This is so typical of Republican’ts.  If they can’t
control the the conversation, they simply refuse to
answer questions which they know will make them look
bad, but are part of their philosophy and agenda.  In
doing this they are as much as admitting that their
beliefs are far outside of the mainstream of public
opinion and they don’t want to be responsible for
voicing them to an open audience.  All questions that
they don’t care to answer will be labeled “gotcha”
questions.  Mark my words, this will be the new
Republican’t strategy for dealing with the press-
change the subject or refuse to answer.  You have and
will see it in the presidential debates constantly.
Just watch Bachmann’s performance on last week’s
edition of “Face the Nation” on CBS for the new
template on Republican’t media strategy.
