In this recent appearance on GRITtv, “The World As It Is” author and Truthdig columnist Chris Hedges talks with host Laura Flanders about the murder of Osama bin Laden and cuts through the noise to pose some tough questions about America’s fighting style—“What is the moral difference between a drone attack and an IED?”—and points to the reasons why our empire is dying.  —KA

Nozferatu what does “state sponsored terrorism” do you not understand? You missed him saying it or didn’t link it to what he was talking aobut. You missed his point.

I disagree with Mr. Hedges in just one area,it is that we are a dying empire” when we haven’t yet had our Republic killed off yet. First that just like Rome that lost its Republic first then several centuries later their empire. We are seeing that the oligarchs here want to crash the economy and blame it on our present form of gov’t. Of course they will be ready to replace it. It will be a caricature of our present country, only without the few freedoms we still retain.

They will ‘help’ us only it will be all on their terms. Now choose, a life of strife and starvation or cannibalism etc or their life of control and no rights, but you have electricity and clean, relatively, running water. Neo barbarism or their rigid theocratic-corporate state where war is the past time? You know what most will chose in an instant with eyes wide open.

The Bin Laden Assassination psy-op joins 9/11 as the complementary twin pillar to shore up the GWOT

Left/Lib/Progs maintain: the Bush Regime lied about everything except 9/11; the Obama Regime lies about
everything, now except Bin Laden. Moreover, now they’re even being sucked into supporting NATO’s
bombardment of Libya, whose so-called ‘rebels’ are widely confirmed as controlled by international
intelligence operatives.

Hedges in a recent radio interview: “A Bin Laden psy-op is too big a lie to get away with.” Sounds like he’s
channeling Goebbles.

Flanders to a caller on her radio show (few years back): ” Forget it, I know people who saw the nose cone of
the plane in the Pentagon wreckage.”  Wow, a plastic nose cone survived a crash that a pair of 2-ton
titanium engines did not!

Again, IMHO, these Left Gatekeepers take their limited-hangout positions, not on ideological grounds, but
rather as survival - so-called ‘conspiracy theorists’ get no favored media positioning.

These Progs are being used - their presumed ‘alternative’ status is largely to serve as a counter-distraction
to the so-called Conservative voices (most recently T-Party) distractions - the Progs may even know they’re
being used, but can’t walk away from their cognoscenti celebrity, secure incomes, various percs., etc.

The goal in the manipulated use of their voices is no different than manipulation of those on the right - it’s
simple: promote self-destructive infighting among the under classes and keep their minds off their true
enemies, the oligarchs.

“capture, apprehension of Osama bin laden” - Nancy Pelosi

?!? She can not even SAY it. I guess that kind of talk is “off the table”.  What a loser.

I thought I was the only one who thought like that. The American dream being an imperialistic masturbation fantasy of ‘Manifest Destiny” and exceptionalism. US body politic with its head up its own ass, in love like Narcissus with its own dreams of power. The badass (in reality -fat ass) imperialism anointed with a heretical invocation of Jesus Christ who would have exposed their hypocrisy as surely as he called the Pharisees a ‘brood of lecherous vipers’.

blogdog:

As you infer in your understandably indignant rant, if we “speak the language of terrorism” these days - and that includes both the political administrations and the American populace - it is the result of the 9/11 flase flag attack, and the propagandistic reiteration of key words and phrases by Bush/Cheney/Rumsfeld/Rice et al, and the language that both naturally and not comes out of war (Iraq, Afghanistan).  This type of conditioning is the “new normal” for Americans, who by and large are too blind to see it, and too weak to fight it.

“Conspiracy theorist” has become a pejorative phrase used to marginalize anyone who questions anything the government or media tell them.  But let’s call it what it really is: speaking truth to power.

Peace.

Couldn’t agree more. Nice to hear some one tell it like it really is out there.
Just hope some one else is listening…

Not only we speak the language of terrorism, but we have elevated terrorism-in-action to the highest form of savagery.
Just consider the drone attacks that has killed thousands of innocent civilians in Afghanistan, Pakistan and lately Libya!

The purpose of gate keepers like Hedges is to tell us things we already know.  Who in hell needs to be told the US is a terrorist nation when it is bombing three defenseless countries daily?  Incidentally, if you want the statistics google air force magazine and click on the daily report archive link.  What Hedges does not do is identify the persons and organizations responsible.  The American people?  Absolute nonsense, we don’t have any more to do with US war policy than the man on the moon does.

Chris does so great interviews on LINK-TV as well.

LINK-TV is on channel 375 on DirecTV in Washington and reminds me of when Media protected America, not the owned media of today.

The famous psychologist Dr James Hillman would agree with Chris about the American’s self obsession. I grew up in America in the ‘40s and ‘50s in a rural Nebraska town—in memory it is like a foreign country now, and I am like an exile from that better country to which there is no return. We have a country where fear and anger have a terrible grip on people.  The fear of death is the primary guiding consideration. I agree with Chris about neo-feudalism.  When disasters occur like the current flooding, we can be sure the government will do the minimum.  We do not take care of this country anymore.  About many of these things the Right Wing Christians were correct back in the ‘90s.  But their style prevented most from listening.  And of course they had other thing to say which were divisive.  What to do.  In the middle ages women who lacked the dowry to become nuns often created houses and lived together. Probably some men did this also.  Not a bad idea.  I have a friend who is a nurse living in East Oakland in the Black Muslim area—in a warehouse with 9 others.  Formerly she lived in San Francisco on Bernal Heights but found the classy whites too much to take.  She loves the ghettos though.  It’s the city shadows now who speak the truth having lost most everything.  Wealth was our delight and finally our despair.

While this is an interesting interview and Hedges makes some good points, he still misses the key point (by blatantly not saying it) that this is all State sponsored stuff.

It’s not enough to say “it’s our money that created these organizations”....it’s OUR MANDATE to create these organizations…we’d have no one else to blame around the world to make excuses for invading others…we’d have no enemies to point figures towards…

I wish he would say it outright.

But he is right…YOU CANNOT change the way these aholes think…they will never let you change the way they think so as to understand the enemy…I mean freedom fighters;)

Terrific interview!  Thanks so much for giving this space and time.  Nobody could have said it better! It’s all we know and all we need to know—at least for the present.

Rudolpho,

You have to demonize and belittle your enemy in order for your countrymen to support and defend you.

Add a good dose of dumbsh&ts; to the mix and you have a nation that thinks it’s powerful, strong, wealthy, and prosperous even though it’s bankrupt, socially corrupt, morally void, mentally weak, and everything is borrowed to be paid back on a later day.

There is no reason to treat others like garbage if they are not seen in the light of being garbage.

White folk (particularly the Brits, French, Germans, and now what I call the modern day clusterfrak of left-over Europeans…i.e. the Americans) are experts at this.

The US is a British experiment gone bad…well..maybe not bad…perhaps it’s what it’s supposed to be…but bad nevertheless.

With centuries of experience and talent in empire building, destroying others, and acting superior to all, it’s no surprise the US uses the same tactics the Brits used when marching into areas they had no business going into.

We now live in a time where there is no room for backpedaling.  We can’t merely invade, then leave, and no one be left the better for it anymore.  There are too many people on this planet, not enough resources, communication channels are too vast, news travels too fast (well fake news anyway), and the effects of invasions and wars are far more immediate than before.

We have no one to blame but ourselves for this mess.  WE are the ones who claim we live in a democracy….but all we do is act like lazy, dumb, good-for-nothing consumption whores that don’t care, don’t want to know, and frankly buy into the whole “we’re better than them” bullsh^t.

The filth in our own government will continue to exist up until the day we decide to take a nice hot, shower, wake up from our dumb slumber, and clean ourselves.

Until then, this democracy is one big farce.

blogdog, you are right, imo. There are limits on “acceptable” discourse in the public sphere, and every smart person who pays attention knows where they are, and some of those people adhere to them.

Never been any good at it myself.

Blogdog .... great comment, I don’t know if you’re entirely right, but you’re going in the right direction IMO.

Your comment prompted me to listen, I’m about 1 minute it ...

Hedges:  “We have become the monsters that we fight”....

Wait a minute, the people we are fighting, the Iraqis, the Afghans, the Pakistanis, the Palestinians, are NOT MONSTERS, they are defending their own lands.  We’re the only monsters, the most aggressive country in history that has to travel half way around the world to find ‘enemies’ to kill.
