New and Improved Comments

We are launching a major overhaul of our comments section.

In addition to more robust spam filtering and moderation, new features include the ability to rate other comments, sort how they are displayed and respond directly via e-mail or in a thread.

Unfortunately, commenters will lose their existing Truthdig identities. It's a pain, we know, but on the plus side you will now be able to log in with a plethora of options, including Google, Twitter, Facebook and Disqus accounts.

Before launching this system we spent months in discussion with our top commenters. We listened to the feedback and we hope you like what we've come up with.

The fundamental moral issue driving the need for health care reform was and is
the necessity of expanding coverage, particularly to those with preexisting
conditions. It is beyond shameful that we deny reasonable coverage to millions
of Americans and legal residents.

Passage of this law was a significant , albeit messy, achievement by the
Democrats. Unfortunately too many in the party lack the backbone to stand on
principal and counter the propaganda and misinformation that characterizes
much of the media and internet coverage of this issue.

Cost control was always known to be a huge and complex problem that will
have to be addressed over decades. There have been no serious proposals
made by the Republicans or those in the Tea Party movement during the
debate that preceded passage of the law or since that address the fundamental
moral issue or the excessive costs in our non-system.

Too often those opposing the extension of coverage to the uninsured are
legislators, people on Medicare or other of the adequately insured that have
coverage now and in the future.

Have we lost the capacity for empathy and concern for our neighbor? Are we
willing to allow people to go bankrupt because of cost or worse die because of
lack of care?

What kind of a nation are we?

Health care reform is a large change so off course it is going to be unpopular especially when people aren’t seeing that many of the benefits yet and when it primarily improves the situation for that 20% of the population that face some chronic form of illness. Given that most people are healthy, it requires imagining being in the shoes of others with such illness to understand the hardships that exist to those who can’t afford necessary treatments or who lose their life savings paying for them.
