This disturbing video clip shows Occupy Oakland protester and three-tour Iraq War veteran Kayvan Sabehgi in an altercation with riot police Nov. 2. The Guardian posted the clip late last week and reported that Sabehgi suffered a ruptured spleen as a result of the beat-down captured here, and that Oakland police say they are looking into the incident. —KA

Never met a good cop, probability in running into a good one? In my experience not good. And yes I have met retirees like yourself with the same high opinion of their actions and them selves. Still not impressed. That which I related is their inculcation, initiation so to speak in the us against them club.

Again, never speak with a cop unless they use force, never trust what a cop has to say, that will change as they have no minds of their own, so to get any kind of commitment you have to go all the way to the attorney general, maybe homeland security. Plugged in robots run a muck has been my experience, ready to violate my rights, what are left anyway and always ready to bring violence to prove some f%$* up point they happen to be carrying in their head that day.

Mekhong Hurt:  Do you know of any instances where police have been trained in now to deal with non-violent groups as opposed to how to deal with violent groups?  Do they know anything at all about non-violence—what it is, what it means, why it is being used, its history, the “mind-set” of non-violence?  And do most police have a “mind-set” themselves that is flexible enough to deal with either type of crowd?

My assumption, based on years of careful observation,
is that use of force makes the user almost as frightened as those it is used against, and that fear encourages more violence rather than less. Hence police so often “overshoot the mark”, which
causes more fear, etc. etc.  Their posture imitates
courage and invincibility, but their behavior indicates fear—that they will do too much, or too little, or—something which they will regret. It’s a grave ocupational hazard, I think, and I am wondering how police training meets this hazard before the guys get into tight situations where reflex is likely to take over.

@Mekhong Hurt…

I fully agree that it seems unwarranted and unfair to tar all members of the state’s enforcers with the same brutal brush. I’m sure some of them are a nice as you and I. So where are they?

When I see videos of what in every sense of the word are GANGS of armed and armored muscle men standing around WATCHING others of their ilk beating up unarmed civilians, just where exactly am I supposed to put that “tar.”

Something happens to otherwise reasonable people when they’re given a uniform and badge, a gun, a stick, pepper spray and the “right” to assault almost with impunity. They turn very, very ugly.

As I said before, one day the citizens will have had enough of this treatment and then the shit will hit the fan for sure. There are a lot more armed civilians than there ever can be armed enforcers. You can guess the result. You actually don’t have to guess… just read history.

Let’s say that, broadly speaking, American “culture” has a high tolerance for violence—in reality and in entertainment. Let’s say that Americans are as scared of themselves as they are of others, due largely not only to the after-effects of the “culture” but because they are under suspicion by their own “security agencies” most of the time, and know that if they are “picked up” on a minor offense, they will probably be roughly handled. Let’s also say that, if and when this happens to some, they don’t feel so sympathetic toward the victims as they do toward the authorities whom they hesitate to criticize. Let’s say that most Americans have been “groomed” to keep their mouths shut, support war and social injustices, endure losing jobs, houses, health, and still insist that “America is the strongest and best country in the world.”
Let’s say also that, thanks to the Occupiers, they are only now beginning to wake up to the fact that they don’t need to be afraid. that they can do things
to help make changes for better lives for everybody. They are also beginning to learn about “The Power of Nonviolence.”
Let’s say, Happy Thanksgiving to the tens of thousands of Occupy Wall Streeters and all the rest of us 99%!

It’s meaningless to say that the police are “looking into” an incident when the incidents continue to happen. Have the police been trained to do anything other than handle terrorists?

Clash: I fully support the Occupy movement (though not some individual acts a very few have committed, such as vandalism), and I find the behavior shown in the video repulsive beyond measure.

That said, let me that as a former police officer and security patrol officer who actually was called upon a time or two to put my own life on the line in physically defending the wronged and innocent target of mob hatred, I am deeply offended by your tainting every officer in uniform for the actions of the officers caught in this video. In private security, as a supervisor, one of my areas of responsibility was internal affairs—investigating our own officers. And yes, I sacked more than one, though none of them were guilty of anything remotely as bad as what these cops did.

You cannot judge hundreds of thousands of people in law enforcement solely on the disgusting actions of a tiny, tiny few.

There’s the rub, the p0lice haven’t changed in 50 odd years, still the political dupes they ever were, never to be trusted, always abusive, and always staunch supporters of their law and their order. Pig’s,Cop, Swine, they are the true minions of the criminal elite. So since the names fit, they should not mind wearing them. But then again what do you do with the left over killers from the wars the empire must fight. They are not now, never were, and never will be anything more than this cultures reactive, violent soldiers who have only one mission protect the elite when necessary, harass the the populace and when the opportunity presents itself, use their power to degrade, and intimidate humans. They are not with you, they do not want to help you. They like other gangs are only interested in themselves.

This happened more than 2 weeks ago and I read about it in the Guardian.  Bringing it up here, so long afterward, re-instigates hate and fear. Why not publish it when it happened?

Allow to begin by saying that I am not
American..The Americans that I have met have varied
from really nice people to scary characters (like the
police shown in the video).  All I can ask is..what
happened?
The police belong to the 99 percent..yet they act
like sub humans even though they are not called names
like “pigs"as they were in the 60’s and the
protesters act in a civil..peaceful manner.
Who trained these police to be so obscene..vicious
towards its young people? Why are the not
investigated and punished for their actions instead
of getting a free ticket to be brutal?  At one time
when one thought of the USA..“freedom” came to
mind..now it has been replaced with “fascism”..
especially after viewing these videos.
The rich are to blame..for so long they have had
blood up to their elbows and will continue along its
brutal ways until something drastic is done .

This type of behavior from Agents of the State is so profoundly offensive that it’s beyond my ability to find the words to express my anger and disgust. Don’t these goons realize just how stupid and scared they look and sound?

The politicians and other authorities who authorize this sort of action are beneath contempt. If I were in command they would be immediately suspended and charged with aggravated assault.

One of these days the citizens will arm themselves better than the police and will flow out from the side streets, mow them down, and leave them all dead on the pavement. I know this action would only result in the State retaliating by bringing in more brain-dead troops with bigger weapons thus escalating the conflict to the breakdown of law and order and civil war. But so be it. Better that than a nation of citizens cowering from their own government.

This state-sanctioned brutality on a citizen of the USA - yes, that formerly free nation - and the abrogation of his civil rights is shameful and highly illegal. Any judge who would find otherwise is as corrupt as the system.

I hope this video is shown in some sort of loop at every travel agent’s office in the world where tickets to America are sold. Who in their right mind would ever want to VISIT there, let alone LIVE there anymore? Maybe at one time… but not any longer.
