A Power Plant for the BackyardPosted on Feb 22, 2010
The impresario behind this newfangled clean-energy box sees one of his mini power plants in every home, but it’s not clear if the little miracles even work. 60 Minutes via Engadget: Advertisement New and Improved CommentsIf you have trouble leaving a comment, review this help page. You know, I don’t look at cbs as the professional and ethical
journalistic organization it acts. Granted they do present
some interesting video posts on 60 minutes but to me nothing
as ‘investigative’ as I remember from at least the 70s when I
would watch it on a quasi regular basis.
But when I watched this video, and I had to force myself to see
the whole clip, I almost turned it off when there appeared this
aging and apparently ‘reconfigured’ female(almost as pelosi is reconfigured) reporting on the screen as a flirt, I would rather have watched ‘Naked News’ instead, but yeah, it is all about infotainment as that is the only way most people who watch msm channels like cbs can absorb anything.
All I want are just the facts mam.

The question that must be asked first with follow-ups
Is CBS -60 minuten doing some insider a favor or is CBS an investor?
If its a “revolutionary” product as claimed why not install several in different
parts of the country with the option for each participant to buy stock at a
discount and given the mentality of the American consumer it’ll either go for
broke or go the way of other gimmicks.
In any case CBS aught as a professional and ethical organization investigate
critically and fairly the product they put not only their 60 Minutes but the
entertainment aura of their newsbroadcast.**

I watched the whole video. Let’s see; Ebay, google, and Fed Ex are “using” and have used this system and they say it works and saves them $100,000/year (Ebay, I think).
Report thisThe company admitted they had problems with a couple of their installed devices, but fixed them.
Not likely a scam; but not yet a proven, economically viable generator of scale.
Time will tell.

““but how do we make hydrogen? “”
Well, you start by gathering some sub-sub atomic particles that
Report thiswill constitute a quark or a few of the different quarks that will
produce a proton; find a neutron, whatever that is made of; grab
an electron from somewhere then stick them together and viola,
you have hydrogen.
By knobcreekfarmer, February 22, 2010 at 7:14 pm Link to this comment
but how do we make hydrogen? well, let’s see. it takes super heated (read: coal)
natural gas and other nasty chemicals injected and it all has to be compressed
(which takes shit loads more energy). yep, that’s basically how they do it.
sure you get water vapor as the waste product on your side but it is actually far
worse for the environment to make hydrogen, on the production side, than to fucking just burn the same (energy equivalent) in gas.
remember that first law of thermodynamics: “energy can be transformed (changed
from one form to another), but cannot be created or destroyed”
if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Time will tell, lets all hope this will be the revolutionary product we hope it is.
In my lifetime I’ve seen LPs go to 8tracks to cassettes to reel to reel to lightscibe to CD to DVD, and can only wonder whats next?

This is the technology we have been hearing about for years. It is very possible that they finally have it figured out.
The next big step is to power it with hydrogen, which would totally transform our whole economy and ecology, and probably politics as well.

C’mon people! Watch the whole show! What do you mean “it’s not clear if the little miracles even work”? For example, on 60 minutes they showed that eBay is successfully using them.
And yes, they do use fuel, and yes there are already investors who have put in hundreds of millions of dollars.
The only issue is if it can be mass produced enough to lower the selling price.

nerver one to pitch out an idea, good or bad, i’d like to simply point out that the

Does anyone feel safe enough to invest?
With all the grinning and ‘positive’ rhetoric, it looks more like
a selling point for investors especially when the
$100,000,000.00 and $400,000,000.00 figures were being
thrown around, so why not get investor money instead of
using their own.
The 20% chance of working seems too low and the statement
that the power companies would use it to power their grids
sounds down right ominous because they would still be in
charge of your power and its costs which means ‘don’t expect
the cost of power to go down, on the contrary, expect it to go
up because if this is really a revolutionary product, the
chances of private homes, excluding the ‘elite’, would most
likely be denied having one.
It does sound better than the cold fusion from the 80s though.

They said it RUNS ON NATURAL GAS! At only twice the efficiency rate. Yet another scam to keep us continually paying the power companies and depleting our natural resources. Solar and wind are it! Find a way to make them cheap and abundant so that Every home can be “off the grid.” Otherwise, it’s just masturbation.

The fact that this comes from a “secretive” company and goes directly to the mainstream media rather than being vetted in peer-reviewed journals is a DEAD GIVEAWAY:

@BC
Report thisI think your questions are quite good, actually, but I also doubt that this enterprise
could secure any VC if the net energy production were negative. Not to say that they
are infallible, but they are quite careful with their money, and that would be question #1.

BC asked very good questions.
Report thisIs this anther Ethanol “green energy” fiasco where the energy obtained is almost equal to the energy spent to produce the Ethanol.
Well, the corn lobby gave us Ethanol, what lobby is giving us Bloom.
This is too good to be true, I will believe it when I see it and the ins and outs of the technology are explained and are in the open.
By jltnol, February 22, 2010 at 12:12 pm Link to this comment
I don’t want them at the current generation plants, or even at the sub-stations…
I want one in my back yard, and for it to say “Bloom”, not “GE”.
Even when they are at the substations, we’re still “subscribers”.... when in reality,
Report thiswe don’t need to be that any more!

the video stopped at 3/4 of the way through, but one question stands out for me after watching this. ok, i have a whole bunch of questions, but this is the big one…
how much fuel is consumed to produce how much energy?
the inventor lists a number of suggested fuels (all of which are hydrocarbons?) including natural gas. i’m sure i’m naive and uninformed, but I just don’t understand the benefit of fuel cells when the wind and the sun are available without the requirement for consumption of fuel.
there’s also a weird comment where he agrees with interviewer that ‘solar’ could be used for fuel- used for what? i thought fuel cells are a way to use an electrochemical process to produce energy- so what is the solar energy used for in this process?
i’m open to being educated on the benefits of this, as i obviously just don’t ‘get’ it.

I note, that successful technological change to
Report thisthe electric generation business is now possible
due to the billions of new dollars the computer
sector created. It can fuel the innovations
without fear of sequestering by the old
energy/auto money. But remember, it is
economic and technological stimulation from
the PUBLIC sector that ignites the change, in
this case NASA and tax breaks.
