Truthdig’s Editorial RoundtablePosted on Sep 19, 2009
Truthdig editors Robert Scheer, Peter Scheer and Kasia Anderson give their takes on their picks from the week’s crop of news stories, including the rise of radical rhetoric on the right, Obama’s so-called socialism (for Wall Street) and how to shop for new planets to call our future home. They have us just where they want us. The majority of population has narrow interests and lack of curiosity in what is going on in their society. Makes them more easily malleable, if they vote at all, to vote for whom they see most on TV. The opposite of what Thomas Jefferson wanted with an “informed electorate” that would keep liberty alive.

I like how the arrows in the truthdig logo point at Peter’s head.

About seven out of ten of the “media savvy” younger
Report thisgeneration can’t find the US on a map of the world,
don’t know in which century the civil war was fought,
don’t know how many states there are in the US, can’t
name a single founding father of the US, and don’t know
which country the colonies fought the revolutionary war
against according to a recent survey. Of what value is
“media savvy” under those circumstances?

Obama isn’t “blowing it” if he is working for another mandate hidden from us. He is just a liar to us as he works for others with them to get what they and he wants. A theocratic corporate nation-state. The veneer of him is very thin and more of the truth underneath is showing constantly. But it is harder to see as the fireworks of the right wing continue to mischaracterize him as something he isn’t—a Liberal or a Progressive or Marxist for that matter! (If only he was.) Also the gloss of the election is still strong. Which actually works in his favor as he continues the policies going back to someone he admires, Reagan in an unbroken chain to today.
But then that was the point, just like with Bill Clinton before. We have the same facts, just different opinions of those facts.

“Media savvy”, says Scheer the younger of his own generation. But we the elder generation actually grew up with a free press and an independent tradition of investigative journalism, thus perhaps we may be guilty of clinging to the past a bit.
I believe that this younger generation is far more optimistic about the possible worth of Barack Obama’s administration than are the grey panthers….and that is not said as a good thing.

I meant to ~also~ put it on mp3. Enjoyed watching it, but mp3 audio would be more convenient.

It would be helpful if this worked. You also should consider removing your frontpage links to this.

Put this kind of stuff—includes three-part series with Amy Goodman last week—on mp3 for download along with other stuff in “Truthdig Podcast.” Audio only will be just fine. Thanks.
