Votes, elections and talking heads appear to have zero effect to change the course of the US ship of state. It is still heading directly for the lighthouse at which it was carefully aimed by the Neocons. One presumes that the first class passengers have taken precautions, but with a bit of luck they may get a surprise when they expect the proles to respectfully touch their forelocks and allow the ‘beautiful people’ to board the lifeboats unmolested and depart to sunnier climes before the crash. Leaving the proles, their wives and their children to the frigid waters of complete financial collapse.

An actual radio conversation between a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier and the Canadian authorities off the coast of Newfoundland in October, 1995.

Canadians:  Please divert your course 15 degrees to the South to avoid collision.

Americans:  Recommend you divert your course 15 degrees to the North to avoid a collision.

Canadians:  Negative.  You will have to divert your course 15 degrees to the South to avoid a collision.

Americans:  This is the Captain of a US Navy ship.  I say again, divert YOUR course.

THE SOUND OF SILENCE
Today’s show had plenty of silence—beautiful little silences— ... as speakers gathered their thoughts, paused and waited for the moderator. With no interruptions. Methinks someone read the team the riot act after last weeks show, which, to put it as charitably as possible, did not have such silences.

To this listener, the show felt much more decorous. With speakers taking great pains to avoid talking over each other. A fine job. Will it be the same in fifty two more weeks? We hope so.

LEFT, RIGHT AND CENTER
It would _still_ be more realistic to find a real left winger - perhaps David Harvey - and then the rest of Left, Right and Center could revert to their ‘right wingers’ category which is how the rest of the world understands Left, Right and Center.  Gore Vidal - the US has one political party, the Property Party, with two right wings - Democrat and Republican.

Would this require the re-education of their domestic US audience? Undoubtedly. Would this be an earthquake in political understanding in the US? It certainly would. And about time. Before the continuing Neocon policies end all pretense at democracy—which with the non-reforms of the banking sector, ongoing wars and continuing hegemony of the Military-Industrial-Congressional complex—shows every sign of already having been achieved.

Will the next US election go the way of Iran’s in 2009 and the way of 2000 and 2004, both stolen? With zero reform and the chance of reform frozen at ‘absolute zero’, who will care?  Except the US people and the about-to-be-made-extinct US middle class.
