Armitage on Torture, ‘AWOL’ CongressPosted on Apr 17, 2009
Now that the Department of Justice has released the latest stunning Bush-era torture memos, this Al-Jazeera English interview with former Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage, in which he admits that the Bush administration flouted the Geneva Conventions and that he probably should have resigned, is even more alarming. A candid, if brusque, Armitage faces off with Al-Jazeera’s Avi Lewis in this clip from “Fault Lines,” deflecting some of the criticism of President Bush and those in his closest circles onto legislators in Congress who were, as he puts it, “AWOL” when they should have been keeping closer tabs on the goings-on in the White House. AFriend—Where did I disagree? I was trying to disagree with those who dont want to do anything except expres outrage and indignation. I do not doubt that anything you say is true.
I cant travel much, cant afford it. But, I have protested at the School of the Americas, and, have friends and former colleagues who know alot about the “situation” in Latin America. (Maybe Pres. Obam should read “The Shock Doctrine” as well as the book Chavez gave him) I have, basically, just read about it.I meant that the names of Congress persons (and others) who are involved are not made public yet. If we are not going to prosecute, then, correct, we might as well leave it alone . And those that support not prosecuting should just stop talking about it because it is like pissing in the wind and pretending that it is all better now.
Even if we do, the “dominance of the hemisphere” strategy and military dominance of the US Empire remains the same. We cant seem to stop talking about “leading”. I dont hear anyone asking us to.
I agree with Purple Girl on Congress.
AFriend—I will check out the websites you suggest…maybe post later…

Exactly why many in Congress Do not want to proceed with criminal investigation….Complicity on both sides of the Aisle.
Report thisAnd Torture is not the only thing they may be hoping to bury. Who knew or suspected Cheney’s Hit squad? Who realized the lead up to Invading Iraq was based on outright Lies about intelligence. We know who all gave the Okay Dokey for Illgal wiretapping- The ‘Patriot Act’ was Unconstitutional from Start to to finish- reason they cloaked it with that Oxymoron.
Many did not just ‘Cave’ they PAVED.Working both sides of the Aisle and the political spectrum to push through legislation which was innately Against American Interests and Values.Repugs and their lil’ Blue Lap Dogs worked together to sell US a scam, which has led US to what we face now. Through 2 illegal wars, Corp deregulations and Sociological Divide & Conquer Rhetoric.
I want Cheney Corps Two Subsidiaries- the Neo Cons and the Clintonites. They have worked in tantum to Betray and Destroy our country- From Sea to Shining Sea!

That is why we must investigate and find out who was involved. If the Congress had not voted for the Patriot Act, for the invasion of Iraq, for “enemy combatant” status, this would never have been allowed to happen.
Dont good Dems want people who permitted torture to be gone from the party?
I would be “forward looking” , too, if I was afraid of being a intl war criminal…and all of us, by allowing them to carry on.
These crimes will be visited upon the entire US for many years to come.
