Our so-called forefathers were isolated wealthy landowners and tradesmen - not so different than modern-day congressmen. Many owned slaves. Concepts of “democracy” and “equality” were lofty terms used to sell their documents. Like colonial-era PC salesmen they successfully marketed the Constitution like a laptop that they KNEW would never really trickle down to ordinary folks. Marketing and capitalism and bait-and-switch works wonders every time - we, the rubes, always buy in hook, line, and sinker. Bush’s infamous No Child Let Behind “education” law is a prime example - it was never meant to be properly funded; from the start it was meant to be a way to hold down teachers’ unions with an “accountability” ploy - like Reagan quashed the air traffic controllers.
The Centrists ensured the failure of the stimulus at its outset - and can now sit back and crack wise at its deficiencies.

With knuckle-draggers like Nelson, Reid, Murtha and others as the face of the Democratic party Obama doesn’t need any enemies!

If the republicans were in charge, the whole stimulus plan would be great and any objections are immediately unpatriotic and treasonous. And I do believe the amount for education is a real jab in the side for them because republicans get more people to come over to their side when they aren’t educated and by that, I mean not educated enough to know when to question certain agendas or actions by those that are trying to rob every penny they can get their hands on or take away what rights and liberties that are left. So any kind of funding is totally not to their benefit as the republicans cannot use those quaint phrasings such as ‘god, guns and gays’ that stir those subhuman emotions to make em believe that the repubs are the side to be on and anything they is the way it is supposed to be even if these clueless dolts are losing just about everything they had. Yep, big time repub/neocon trick is to keep dumb and intoxicated.
I just saw where those oh so scared elected pions of ours have come to a deal of $789,000,000,000.00 for a stimulus. Quaint how these pieces of fecal matter hug the church, god, the american people, the children(our future)and what they are doing is a great thing except in the ‘actions speak louder than words department’ they obviously don’t give a damn about any of those things and are only interested still in corporate welfare.

The good senator’s just a little bitter about losing the Nobel to Krugman. And really, what sensible country would piss away $100B on “education” when there are still bankers to be housed and foreigners to be bombed?

‘Centrists’ are nothing more than Rats trying to sneak off the ship they helped navigated into the rocks.
Report thisIf ‘Socialism’ comes to America, it is the Fault of the Repugs who pushed US into an economic Corner. You can not call yourself a ‘fiscal Conservative’ if you have allowed Wall street every Liberty they could ahve dreamed of. You are not fiscally conservative when you have allowed 10 billion a month to be siphoned off by Corps who have consitently failed to produce Anything in the so called Reconstruction of a country we illegally (and fraudualntly ) Invaded. You are not fiscally conservative when handed a surplus and squander it, then rack up a Deficit larger than this country has ever charged though foreign creditors. You are not fiscally conservative when you have allowed the ‘fiscally’ generating industries to be shipped over seas.
However if your idea is to starve out the Wealth generating masses, cut the legs out of education to assure our kids can’t compete in the future in the global market, or lack the nutrition or healthcare to be productive and capable of producing, ignore infrastructure to guarantee no one is safe and able to do business. If you idea of fiscal Conservativism means assuring the ‘lower classes’ benefit the least from the wealth they generate while conserving that wealth for the upper few. They I completely understand your claims, although Rhetorically misleading and dishonest. Far more accurate to proclaim you are a Feudalistic Caste system Elitist.

Can we take a man seriously who thinks Adam and Eve rode dinosaurs to church? He and his whole backwater state are living examples of our failed education system. But that’s OK, all we need to do is sit in a darkened corner of our forclosed house, heating up a can of baked beans with a butane torch, and guarding our peanut butter with a high powered rifle. We can sit there comfortable in the knowledge that, as we burn books to keep warm, that the lord will provide!
If this guy is an example of our elected representation, we are so screwed!

So, kids in overcrowded under-performing schools are ok, and yet spending money for the construction of new schools in the USA is somehow “wasteful”; yet spending trillions on the LIE that is IRAQ is okay!!
Yeah, I get it now!!!!

Come the revolution guys like Ben Nelson get sent up to the wall first. Being too cautious is a major risk in this climate. The people remember who is a problem and who is a solution.

Wow… Yeah, we have such a great “commitment to education”. A wonder it is, then, that my little girl’s school is always begging for money from parents, and having to hold fundraisers for every little thing.
What was our “commitment” to the Pentagon’s budget, again? I always forget how many zeroes to add.

The Congressional Budget Office calculates demand will be short $2.9 trillion over the next three years. So $800 billion is not enough. Not spending enough means more unemployment and lost production. President Obama is likely going to have to come back to Congress in the future for more money.

The Republicans are ideologically committed to the idea that the people’s government can never actively accomplish any social or economic good.
Therefore, they do not want the stimulus to work, unless it’s purely through tax cuts and deregulation. If that doesn’t work, that’s still fine with the Republicans.
The worst case scenario for the Republicans is that a government elected and respected by the common people will undertake to spend money and carry out a positive, active program which will actually accomplish something for the general social and economic good. The Republicans’ worst nightmare is something of this sort might work.

Are you really surprised? For 8 years, if this clown has been around that long, congress has done nothing to control and actually helped the ‘unfettered market’ that has brought us into this disaster, why would anyone think this guy can come off a 8 year snooze and know what he is talking about vs. someone who has been tracking the economy for the last 8 to 16 years?
Report thisOh, nebraska, thanks so much for re-electing this whiz. Don’t feel bad, there plenty more from the other states.

Two corrections. First, Mr. Nelson, the governors don’t have a slush fund to pour into education because their budgets are drier than a Nebraska August. You know that as well as anyone and your claim is ridiculous on its face. Second, Mr. Krugman actually blames the Obama camp for not understanding the centrists’ position and subsequently failing to account for their pound of flesh in his original proposal. Mr. Krugman isn’t wild about centrists and he thinks that the country would be better off without them. But he also knows that Democrats who make it from planes states aren’t liberals, they are just more liberal than their wingnut opponents.

Well…. truth be told Mr. Ben Nebraska or whatever, it appears to me you didn’t just get the backseat, but you got “the hump”. And everyone KNOWS why seatbelts are not commonly installed in “the hump” seat.

Paul Krugman’s point is that the overall bill is too small to make up for the falloff in demand. He is not simply talking about education spending. President Obama is probably going to have to come back later and ask for more money.
We sure wind up with some goofy guys in Congress.
