Just Be Glad You’re Not in IcelandPosted on Feb 3, 2009
Poor Iceland. The country’s broke, its currency looks goofy, and now Stephen Colbert is taking pot shots from across the pond to make us feel better about our own economic situation. “If you’re looking for a good time in Iceland, get on the first plane to Norway,” says big meanie Colbert. Olaffson—I will tape those shows and podcast them to you, if I can come live in Iceland…how was the last govt a disaster? What do you think the new PM will be like? I’d podcast them anywa and send them, but, my pc is too small (HD and RAM).
; )
Dave24—
“whining” has become a GOP catchword. Unless you are one, dont use it to degrade someone’s honest complaints about the sheeple citizenry here.
This is how we get a reputation for being passive—-the people of most countries, being in out “situation” would be (are) in the streets demanding REAL “change”. Pam is right.
The premise of his joike was a positive view of Iceland.

Colbert and his writers are genius. Iceland is an absolutely beautiful country and deserves better than its current economic climate. The women are stunning and the landscapes are overwhelming. Colbert is a comedian; he is an actor; he is a character.
It’s ok to laugh at his jokes and disagree with their premise, though it bears remembering that in many cases, the premise itself is a joke.

peedeecee—I think you misunderstand Colbert’s brand of “humor” or irony…he finished with “just because they have clean air, peace, and universal health care…”. He was being sarcastic.
I think Iceland is wonderful. (So does Colbert)
I dont care for him sometimes. He is too “in love” with Dems to be considered a true liberal. I prefer Jon Stewart—-but you missed the point, here.
If I could afford it, I would move to Iceland tomorrow. (My family from Scandanavia is supposed to be from there, originally)

I am an Icelandic physician who recently moved back after having lived in the States for 6 years. Things are bad in Iceland and I think they will get a lot worse in the next two years. The country owes more than it can pay back and people who recently bought houses are being hit the hardest.
We do have some things going for us though. The infrastructure is good and we are a resilient people.
Things were absolutely insane here, and it obviously had to come to an end. I used to see more Range Rovers in a day in Reykjavík than during a whole year in upstate NY.
I’m glad we have a new government, the last one was a total disaster. My uncle is the leader of the Left-Green party and currently holds one of the worst jobs in the word (he is the minister of finance).
Our PM is female, AND GAY, as Colbert pointed out, but that is a total non-issue in Iceland. That is how progressive this country is. So, it is something worth fighting for.
I miss Left, Right and Center, The Colbert Report, The Daily show and NPR.

I wish we were in Iceland. At least they got off the couch turned off the tv and are starting to take back their country from greedy banksters and corrupt politicians. Good for them. Hope the same happens here. Where’s the outrage? We should be marching on Wall Street and DC.

Your comment: “Colbert is nothing more than a wisecracking smartass who makes rude comments that others have written for him. No talent, no class, no intelligence. Solid ego.”
So… I’m curious. What does “pee” “dee” “cee” stand for?
Pretty Damn Criminal…?
Positively Douche Criteria…?
Pertinently Dung Crap…?
Peed (in) Da CaCa…?
Ummmm…. maybe, Post Delusional Cystitis.
Never mind…I got it, Periphrasis Dodderous Condyloma
Am I right?

Colbert is so incredibly outclassed by the poorest, least Icelander that he should not be allowed to express an opinion. Colbert is nothing more than a wisecracking smartass who makes rude comments that others have written for him. No talent, no class, no intelligence. Solid ego.
Iceland will recover, and will continue to be a sane, peaceful country with incredible green technology, top of the line development, and a blessed unawareness of Colbert.

One thing he neglects to mention - the Icelanders as a people? Incredibly hot.
Sadly, though, skyr is one of their better native cuisines.

Iceland will be fine. They care about each other, and, consider each other fellow citizens—not “consumers”! The have a social safety net to fall back on. They will raise taxes, and, make the rich pay their fair share.
The same thing could happen here and, folks would just DVR it—the “non-Revolution” was completely televised, and iPod-ed, and YouTubed.
Most stuff remained the same.
