Just before noon Monday, a U.S. Navy F-18 jet crashed into a San Diego neighborhood as it was approaching Miramar Naval Air Station, hitting at least one home. According to various sources, including this MSNBC report, the pilot is believed to have ejected from the plane before the crash. As of Monday afternoon it was unknown whether any injuries occurred on the ground. Update: On Tuesday, CNN reported that three people were killed in the crash. There was a military/civil mid-air collision on November 16, 2000 in which an F-16 at very high-speed (about 500 knots) disintegrated a Cessna 172 and its pilot.
You can read about it here: http://tinyurl.com/jzxhk
The USAF flight lead, Parker, led his wingman flying an F-16 into the path of ATP rated Cessna pilot whose aircraft wreckage and carnage was scattered over four acres of golf course by the impact.
The flight lead’s commanding officer, Gen. Rosa, found a VERBAL REPRIMAND to be appropriate punishment for the death Parker’s willful disregard for regulations (speeding through congested Class B and C terminal airspace without the required ATC clearance, failure to comply with the USAF regulation mandating briefing airspace before a sortie, ... )caused.
It will be interesting to see the Navy’s response to Neubauer’s choice to continue his flight over heavily populated areas despite less hazardous options.

I am not surprised at all. At the risk of sounding anti US, how often do our pilots get reprimanded for things such as cutting cable car lines that kill people or as mccain did, power lines that left people without power? We may think we need ‘those daring young men on the flying trapeze’ but what we get more times than we need are cowboys or unstable people that have no concern for their actions because they most likely will not have to answer for their actions.

Has this already leaked out?
I just heard that the ATC controller working pilot Lt. Dan Neubauer’s F/A-18 flight en route from USS Abraham Lincoln advised the Lt. to land at an airport located closer to the F/A-18’s position at the time, but that Lt. Neubauer chose to attempt to make Miramar instead of prudently taking the controller’s advise. It’s on the tapes. There is also speculation that the reason for F/A-18’s failure to make the field was due to fuel exhaustion. Apparently Lt. Neubauer would have had to fill out additional paperwork if he had taken the controller’s advice.
Perhaps a FOIA request would give Col. Christopher O’Connor, Miramar’s commanding officer, a clue.

Whew, at least the pilot is safe. The dead on the ground, well, all america needs to sacrifice for the country and if you don’t go to Iraq or Afghanistan then your sacrifice here at home is still appreciated by w & dick all the same.
