Stephen Colbert has figured out John McCain’s new campaign strategy of trying to paint his rival as a socialist: “Clearly the McCain campaign is targeting its most important voter: Joe the McCarthy.” The Colbert Report:

Whoa to a country whose citizens misinterpret the basics of their political system!
Apportionment does not have anything to do with spreading the wealth around. In the 16th Amendment, where it states that “the Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived, without apportionment among the several States, and without regard to any census or enumeration,” apportionment means that the money stays in the federal government’s coffers. The other time that it is used it is referring to the fact that a portion of any direct taxes had to be apportioned, or given, to the states. There is nothing in there about spreading the wealth to the citizens of this country. Now, if you want to say that graduated taxes are in fact socialist, then you might have a valid point.
Also, what laws are derived from the DoI? I was under the impression that the Constitution created the federal government, not the DoI. Why don’t you throw in the Articles of Confederation and the Federalist Papers while you’re at it.

It is good to see that you do have a mind. As you said “Thus, we are OBLIGATED to “alter” or “abolish” (i.e., overthrow) the government when it becomes “destructive” of its primary structure: deriving its powers from the consent of the governed.” The DOI is telling the English why we will no longer be a colony and what we will not accept as a government. The DOI can be seen as a mandate for what the PEOPLE must do when a government is “destructive”. The DOI is talking about citizens not the government that rules over them. We do not take any laws or regualtion from the DOI, our current government is based on the Constitution. You can say the the DOI is part of what should be the american ideology, but that does not make it part of the base of our government.

“That to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That whenever any form of government becomes destructive to these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness. Prudence, indeed, will dictate that governments long established should not be changed for light and transient causes; and accordingly all experience hath shown that mankind are more disposed to suffer, while evils are sufferable, than to right themselves by abolishing the forms to which they are accustomed. But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such government, and to provide new guards for their future security.—Such has been the patient sufferance of these colonies; and such is now the necessity which constrains them to alter heir former systems of government.”
Thus, we are OBLIGATED to “alter” or “abolish” (i.e., overthrow) the government when it becomes “destructive” of its primary structure: deriving its powers from the consent of the governed.

I’ve said this before. The Repugs count on the ignorance of most Americans as to what the DOI and Constitution actually say. In this case, it is the taxes/socialism debate. Yet if people knew their Constitution, they would know that the two reasons for collecting taxes are to help pay for the services the government provides, and…what is called “apportionment” - which is essentially “spreading the wealth around.”
Whoa to a country whose citizens do not even know the basics of their own political system!

Socialism…I do not understand the thinking of Palin, etc..of what makes up a socialist…what you thought was yours it would be collective given to others.
There is no, absolutely no country in the world that did this…it didn´t work in the USSR when even Lenin wrote that communism wasn´t working. It doesn´t work in Europe or the Scandianvian countries.
Children to Israel, go to http://www.democracynow.org and see the video piece about the neo-nazis and their like wanting a revolution. Isn´t it interesting that no one…absolutely no one…has mentioned Palin and her husband once palling around with some of the extreme successionist groups in Alaska that just hate the lower 48.

So to have something which you can ‘Trickle Down’, You must have first Accumulated it and Build some type of a Retaining system right? something to HOLD it BACK, otherwise you would be unable to gradually dispense it in Increments, right? If you do not want to allow it to be disseminated Too much or too far you regulate it into a Trickle. Because if you do you will not have anything left in your reservior.
So Joe, How does the ‘Bladder’ get filled to begin with…Labor. And Who are the ones who act as a Retainer…The Wealthy. And Who are they holding back the ‘liquidty’ From….YOU and Me!
Do You think it possible we would Drown in the Fruits of our Labor? NO , we would flourish. So who is taking your money, those who LOVE ‘Trickle Down’ because they are the Benefactors and controllers of it.
Joe does this not spark a flash of recognition from your school days? Joe does this not sound alot like the system which Ignited a Revolution for Independence? Joe does this not sound like a great system of economic Power Used by Monarchies and Dicatatorships?
When it is US who produce this wealth, Is it not the American Way to give US access to it, and not allow a small group to Hoard it or Refuse to Grant US the rightto propering from it? Joe ‘Trickle Down’ is the Economic policy of Kings and Nobles, Not Free market Democracies.
Oh and Joe…You are Not a King nor a Noble, You are a Serf and Serf are never allowed to work their way out of that Social Ranking, even with a company which earns over ‘250,000’ a year. Kings & Nobles Earn millions and Billions Personally…their Corps Earn Billion or trillions in Profits a year.
Besides your lack of comprehension about the term, the doctrine and certianly anything about Marx is obvious. Unfortunatley you have also succeeded in causing doubt in your knowledge of even American History!
Socialism can co- exist with a Free Market& Democracy doctrine. But Trickle down is innately contrary to both a Free market and a Democracy- in fact it is the Antithesis of Both. So Who’s UnAmerican?? Pick Up a Book, Joe your ignorance is embarassing.

As a Jew, I was terrified by a comment made by Sarah Palin at a rally in which “Joe the Plumber” was a featured guest.
“With his shaved head, jeans, and steel toed boots, he’s OUR kind of guy right?” said Palin to a resounding cheer from
the overwhelmingly WASP crowd. (At which point I cringed for her husband, Todd who is nothing like Joe the Plumber).
In what country are shaved heads, certain brands of jeans and especially steel toed boots not associated with radical
Neo-Nazi skinheads? And how do you suppose those Neo-Nazi skinheads feel about Jews, African-Americans, Catholics, and anyone else who does not fit the narrow description of a
“real” American according to the right wing conservatives?

Report thisOn a serious note, John McCain’s “robo-calls” have gotten more and more obnoxious and slanderous. I have been the recipient of at least 5 of these robo-calls in the last 6 days. I live in Pennsylvania and am ashamed at the depth to which the McCain-Palin, RNC has fallen. They have not one good thing to say and their negative campaigning beggars belief.
Should anyone out there have any influence with the RNC and the McCain-Palin ticket, I would urge them to stop this negative campaigning and start focusing on the positive steps that they will take to get us out of Iraq, help restore the economy and get all Americans healthcare, without regard to income and eligibility.
That being said, Stephen Colbert, is absolutely on target when he states that the voters that the McCain-Palin ticket are going after are the very ones who have gotten us into this crisis and would continue the policies of the most failed administration in the history of the US, the shrub.
