Sarah Palin: Ready to Lead?Posted on Sep 11, 2008
To his credit, ABC’s Charlie Gibson posed some practical and pertinent questions in the first installment of his interview with Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin, and he didn’t let her off the hook when she conflated “national security” with “energy independence.” The initial portion of Gibson’s sit-down interview with Palin aired Thursday night. Gibson also asked Palin, “Can you look the country in the eye and say, ‘I have the experience and I have the ability to be not just vice president but perhaps president of the United States of America?’ ” Update: Watch the extended clip of Gibson’s interview with Palin here. Purplewolf:I hope you figure out how to post your ad about the wolf hunting Ms Palin. It’s nauseating to see the use of high technology to turn the snow of Alaska red with blood, and consider this lopsided encounter as sport. I’m not a hunter, but I can understand the pleasure of a real hunt that involves patience and skill, with no assurance of actually killing anything. Your ad shows the senseless brutality of ‘coptering across nature’s beauty with a telescopic sight, hastening extinction of one of this country’s last natural retreats.

Simon: As a member of Defenders of Wildlife, it is our ad and I will try to post it. There are two different ones, the newest ad can make anyone who has any empathy at all cry when the wolf is shot and is suffering, this ad also does have a warning as ti is disturbing to watch such brutality to these creatures of her God that she chooses to destroy all in the name of big oil. She pays out a bounty of $150.00 for the left foreleg of each wolf brought in. That is sick and sadistic. If she gets elected we will need all the help we can get, but I doubt that we will get much sympathy from the rest of the world, as Sarah is an uninformed war monger that is the Republican mindset.

Ain’t it the truth. You’ve said it here rage. I kept pinching myself as I watched this. I kept glancing out of the windows as well. (the sun is still out there, and the palm trees are still swaying in the breeze)
When she didn’t even KNOW WHAT THE BUSH DOCTRINE WAS, I knew that this was another Stephen King moment, and that there has become almost no space between these moments. She’s never been outside of the country. (sorry, Mexico and Canada don’t count…it’s all North America) and she doesn’t even KNOW WHAT THE BUSH DOCTRINE IS!!! Charles had to TELL her that it is ANTICIPATORY, PRE-EMPTIVE MILITARY AGGRESSION!!!
And she actually said that she never hesitated, not even for an instant, to consider whether she was qualified for the position. That’s what ‘religion’ does for you. All you have to do is ‘believe in’ god, and voila, you ARE god!
Meantime, I’m just wondering what the hell is wrong with ME! Am I just gonna sit here pinching myself black and blue as proof of something I already know? Like that we’re apparently all GONERS – as in the Stephen King moment come to reality?

This abortion issue was in the courts for years. If people do not believe in abortion, then don’t have one. But don’t infringe your beliefs on everyone else. McCain and Palin want to over-turn Roe and Wade which is a huge set-back for Womens Rights.
To “force” a young person, a handicapped woman, a woman who might die or a raped victim to bear a child is awful! I wonder how she’d feel if one of her young girls was raped and found herself pregnant.
The news has Palin running the whole show now. Hell, I should run for Vice President. I was a cheerleader 40 years ago!

All this fuss about Palin will eventually fade as soon as the American people realize that even though she might be good at reciting other people’s words, the job of VP or possible President is far more demanding than that. Right now she is like a new Ice cream flavor. Everyone wants to try it. Than you realize that it sucks and you go back to the one that always satisfies you. And that right flavor Is Obama/Biden, who are without a dought the best choice for this country.

Fenwick,
I went one further - after reading up on the Forrestal - and stumbled across some interesting reading. For example:
Former KGB Maj. Gen. Oleg Kalugin testified under oath before the 1992 Senate Select Committee on POW/MIA Affairs that the KGB interrogated U.S. POWs in Vietnam.
Gen. Kalugin stated that one of the POWs worked on by the KGB was a “high-ranking naval officer,” who, according to Kalugin, agreed to work with the Soviets upon his repatriation to the United States and has frequently appeared on U.S. television.
Col. Bui Tin, a former Senior Colonel in the North Vietnamese Army, testified on the same day, but after Usry, that because of his high position in the Communist Party during the war, he had the authority to “read all documents and secret telegrams from the politburo” pertaining to American prisoners of war. He said that not only did the Soviets interrogate some American prisoners of war, but that they treated the Americans very badly.
Sen. McCain stunned onlookers at the hearing when he rushed forward to the witness table and warmly embraced Col. Bui Tin as if he was a long, lost brother.
And i’ve seen a photo of the embrace.
http://www.vietnamveteransagainstjohnmccain.com/index.htm has links, etc. that seem pretty damning...if somewhat far-fetched in some cases. But they do quote what can be read of the government records.

Subject:John McCain’s Greatest Blunder is the “HOKEY MOM” from Alaska.
John McCain has made REAL BIG BIG BIG BLUNDER IN CHOOSING SARAH PALIN or “HOKEY MOM”,as she called herself in the Republican Convention in ST.PAUL,
Minnesota,to please her audience of all hard-core,
right-wing Republicans in the Republican Party.
In fact,John McCain has placed his selfish and desperate desire to be President of the United States ahead of what really is good for the American people and the country as a whole. That makes his overused comment that,as he put it,"I rather lose an election than a War” is nothing more than an empty slogan,an empty rhetoric and a real political campaign DECEPTIN:
As I watched the “HOKEY MOM“‘s nervous body language and her unfit answers,(of a potential Vice President and possible President in case John McCain drops dead
“GOD FORBIDS” on his inauguration day,if he is elected President),to Charles Gibson of ABC NEWS,I kept wondering: what an extremely UNWISE choice John McCain has made in choosing her as his running-mate.
She has appeared to me so small in substance and status. In short,I was totally stunned by the utter
shallowness of her answers and the instability of her
thoughts:SPLENDID IGNORANCE for all voters to see....
It has turned out that the “HOKEY MOM” IS REALLY AN EMPTY AND EGOCENTRIC “HOKEY MOM”:Her unanswered answer about the Bush Doctrine alone attests to that in a real massive manner about her being unfit to be
a nominee for the second highest position in the land. The whole interview was SAD first for the country, second to the Republican Party and third to
John McCain who desperately wants to be President by
a hook or crook....
With such a totally ignorant, egocentric, loud mouth
and miserably unprepared opponent in substance and status,no wonder that Joe Biden implicitly declared
that a strong woman of the caliber of Hilary Clinton
was probably more qualified than himself to oppose and debate the EMPTY but LOUD MOUTH and EGOCENTRIC
“HOKEY MOM” from Alaska from which the “HOKEY MOM”
said that she could see Russia. And possibly what the
Russians were/are doing!!!!
Joe Biden has made the best diplomatic statements I have heard,so far,in this most disgusting world of political DECEPTION John McCain and his advisers of
lobbyists and neo-conservatives have created by choosing Sarah Palin,"THE HOKEY MOM”,as his running
mate, while allowing the fundamental requirements for a fit nominee for the Vice Presidency of the United States be smashed at the solid rock of POLITICAL EXPEDIENCY.......
IT WILL BE SAD,SAD,SAD AND VERY SAD FOR AMERICA AND

Palin could very will win the VP debate and McCain the presidential debates. PBS is running a occassional series on presidential debates and their first interview was with President GW Bush who said that he picked a clever line and putdown and used them over and over in the first debate. “Fuzzy math” was his line and he continously called Vice President Al Gore’s assertions to his lies “fuzzy math” while the Vice President fumed. Bush won the debate.
The series they are running must be on-line, everything they do is, and it should be de rigeur for everyone interested in or participating in televised debates.
Obama and Biden should beware and be prepared to be sandbagged by the certainty of the con who wins through sheer repetition.

Three things must be kept in mind:
1) The United States is the world’s most religious country. Some 95% of Americans say they believe in God.
Report this2) The United States is the developed world’s most uneducated country. More than half of its citizens do not believe in evolution; nor by extension do they believe in science generally.
3) The United States is among the most racist countries in the world. It will not elect a black man, no matter what his accomplishments or credentials.
conclusion: based on actuarial tables and John McCain’s medical history, there is a better than 50/50 chance that this country will soon be ruled by a theocrat who may well be ready to push the nuclear button to hasten the Armageddon she believes will come in her lifetime.
We may soon abandon the idea of a government “by the people...” for one that is ruled by a mythical being that permits no deviation from His authority. And His representative on earth will be a former beauty queen runner-up who brags that she is ready to lead the world’s most powerful military because Russia can be seen from her state.

GIBSON: Do we have the right to be making cross-border attacks into Pakistan from Afghanistan, with or without the approval of the Pakistani government?
PALIN: Now, as for our right to invade, were going to work with these countries, building new relationships, working with existing allies, but forging new, also, in order to, Charlie, get to a point in this world where war is not going to be a first option. In fact, war has got to be, a military strike, a last option.
GIBSON: But, Governor, Im asking you: We have the right, in your mind, to go across the border with or without the approval of the Pakistani government.
PALIN: In order to stop Islamic extremists, those terrorists who would seek to destroy America and our allies, we must do whatever it takes and we must not blink, Charlie, in making those tough decisions of where we go and even who we target.
GIBSON: And let me finish with this. I got lost in a blizzard of words there. Is that a yes? That you think we have the right to go across the border with or without the approval of the Pakistani government, to go after terrorists who are in the Waziristan area?
PALIN: I believe that America has to exercise all options in order to stop the terrorists who are hell bent on destroying America and our allies. We have got to have all options out there on the table.
-----------------------------
In reviewing her comments regarding going into Pakistan, I wonder if she is even aware of developments that have gone on there within just the past week.
President George W Bush’s speech at the US National Defense University on Tuesday in which he named Pakistan as one of the major battlegrounds in the fight against terrorism and that the US has stepped up raids into Pakistani territory from Afghanistan to attack militants.
On Wednesday there was a detailed roadmap of American strategy outlined by the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Michael Mullen, during an address to the US Congress. The key element of this is the conviction that the only way to win in Afghanistan is to open a new war theater in Pakistan.
Mullen conceded that the US was “running out of time” to win the war in Afghanistan and that simply sending in more troops would not guarantee victory.
“In my view, these two nations [Pakistan and Afghanistan] are inextricably linked in a common insurgency that crosses the border between them,” he said, adding that he planned “to commission a new, more comprehensive strategy for the region, one that covers both sides of the border”.
Pakistan is our ally, but we have to use caution in how we use our military strategy there. They just recently ousted their president and got someone new in there because of the dissention from its people regarding how our military has been functioning in their country. They are right to worry about our “war on terror” overflowing into their country, but at the same time Pakistan needs to take some or most of the responsibilty in not harboring terrorists there.
The last thing I want though is al-Qaeda succeeding in goading the US into opening a third war theater beyond Iraq and Afghanistan. I’d be hesitant sending troops and bombing an allied country and risk killing Pakistani civilians in the process. This will only alienate us more in the public opinion of the world.
Report thisGovernor Palin does not have a worldly enough perspective to understand the dynamics that are in play at the moment, and she would be left in a position where she would be at the mercy of her advisors, which could influence her decision making more so than her own knowledge regarding world politics. An even more important concern with Sarah Palin than her experience (which is awfully thin) is the much more important issue that experience is only one indicator of:
JUDGEMENT!
Obama’s experience is a bit thin, and Biden’s and McCain’s isn’t too big on managing a bureacracy either.
But where do they stand on the quality of their judgment? Palin is a religious fanatic who puts her faith’s interpretation of the real world as more real than science. She believes in censorship, dictating moral choices to other people, and lies easily, without any sign of a “tell” (as poker players call it). She has shown herself totally unable to ANALYZE the situation in Georgia and Iraq, unable to address energy issues beyond a 2nd grader’s mentality (Drill, drill, drill). She’s on the hook for billing her state for living in her own house, and for interfering in a personnel matter because of her personal bias against the individual (her soon-to-be-ex-brother-in-law).
Her JUDGMENT stinks!
So does John McCain’s. He’s fighting the lying-est, dirtiest campaign in years. The lies aren’t even coming from surrogates--they are straight out of his campaign. He’s tried to paint Obama as a pederast for sponsoring legislation to PROTECT small children from pederast perverts. And this is the guy who was the VICTIM of Bush’s boys making out that his adopted Bengali daughter was his illegitimate Black child! Plus, McCain’s campaign has been up and down for a year. I’m still not sure how he got the nomination except that all the other GOPers were serious dead-heads.
So far, it seems the main experience McCain has that the Republicans are talking about is that he got shot down in Viet Nam over 40 years ago and spent 5 years as a POW. Now that had to be incredibly tough---but something like have the voters weren’t even BORN when he came home--that was 1972. “Maverick”? To the GOP, if you don’t vote with the President 97% of the time you are a maverick. BFD!
On the other hand, Obama went for an experienced old hand who can advise him on both foreign policy issues as well as the way to navigate Congress. He picked someone who will tell it like it is, but never forget that Obama will have the final decision. His campaign has been surprisingly trouble-free--far less than either McCain’s or Hillary Clinton’s. He’s focusing on the states he MUST win and states he can win.
Biden? Well, his own presidential campaign went nowhere, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be the IDEAL adviser to Obama. He’s smooth, practiced, polite, but able to be hard-hitting when needed. Yeah, there’s some baggage but it’s all old news, aired long, long ago.
So Obama needs to make McCain and Bush the issue--link them again and again. Take the lead in attacking McCain, stop ceding it to McCain’s Rove-trolls and playing defense! “The best defense is a good offense!”

She’s running for VicePresident of the US, not Mother Theresa’s old job. The Dems need to start reminding people of the millions of jobs lost between Jan.2001 & Jan.2007 when republicans ran the whole government. And those millions are just the tip of the iceberg. Every time a plant closes or an entire industry moves overseas,it takes collateral jobs out too; machine shops, print shops, paper companies, stationery suppliers,diners,taverns,etc.. And let’s face it, there are direct correllations between the rising unemployment rate, hospital bankruptcies, lack of housing & illegal immigration. Add in the foreclosure rates, bankruptcy rates, bank failures and the elimination of the middle class and ask yourself what it is that the republicans are so damned proud of. Do we really want Phil & Wendy Gramm as economic advisors to the next president. As to the “War On Terror” that the repubs like to brag about. George W.Bush had been president for 8 months when that happened. Where was the NSA & it’s director? Condi Rice should have been fired, not promoted to Secretary Of State. Start fighting back.McCain/Palin is all bluster and no substance.

Whoa, a few more interviews like that and she’ll crash and burn! But I have to admit she is brazen. Invoking a warrior God (doesn’t she know that belongs solely to the Israelis), going to war over Georgia, and gushing over the “Bush Doctrine” once she was prompted!
However, she’s on a learning curve though she won’t admit it.

Her nomination is slowly moving from absurd to just flat-out dangerous.
I agree with bentax645 - let’s just stop for one sec to think about what this says about us to the rest of the world; as if we are not already a laughing stock after the last 8 years.
But the US is more than a joke. Under neocon rule, we are becoming a menace and the rest of the world is only going to put up with us for so long.

Funny they were making fun of her convention speech last week on CNN, I think. Whenever the word nuclear came up it showed as NEW CLEAR on the teleprompt, too funny. You can tell it was a Bush speech writer I guess

Remember people (me included) calling HRC “Cheney in a pantsuit”? The jokes on us...now Cheney’s graduated to skirts.
And that Time cover with her pointing a gun at the camera pretty well sums up how i feel about this election...as if some demented, Christian whacko is pointing a loaded gun at my head. (note: not all Christians are whackos or demented)
But maybe that’s the point, and maybe it’s for the best...put us out of our misery and all that.

Questions were just too hard for her. They should have asked what her favorite color is, who does her hair, etc. She certainly knows nothing else.
People who are supporting her would rather put this country in peril rather than not have a women in office.

The interview was staged, not to impart information verbally but to send messages by body language. That seems to be the take thus far according to Amy Walters of the Hotline on C-span this morning. They didn’t want to damage Gibson’s rather weak reputation, but they had to introduce Palin somehow, so they chose body language. Gibson played the officious interviewer and Palin the eager if not well informed aspirant to the position of second fiddle.
Report thisA woman wrote here recently that Palin’s voice was grating. I hadn’t heard her so I could form an opinion. Well, I’ve heard her and I couldn’t agree more. There’s something that says she’s a banshee, screeching in the crowd atracting attention, only to prewarn those who come to her side that they will rue the day.
I find her offputting.

bentax645 said, “what I don’t understand is why the American people cannot see through this veneer”. First of all it’s not veneer, it’s shit. And only 35% of Americans like it (if one can believe the polls). Hopefully I won’t have to eat my words but I think the Palin effect will not hold up throughout the balance of the election. At least not as it relates to picking up any meaningful number of “swing” votes. So far they are only spouting from the “shit doctrine” that has been reeking these past eight years.

I found that interview pretty scary. She seems to endorse the ‘Bush Doctrine’ (without being too sure what it is) and then some.
It’s always going to be difficult to trust someone who has their finger on the trigger and hasn’t taken the time to learn how to pronounce Nu-clear…
I can’t agree that she was not given the kid gloves treatment. Each time she was cornered and babbling, she was let off the hook. But pressuring her is going to be characterised as bullying!

Yes, Alaska is closer to Russia. In the eyes of right wingNuts, that makes Gov Palin a foreign policy expert enough to be a VP or possibly a P. Her Interview with Charlie underscored the fact that she has scanned the “VP for Dummies” book. Here we go again, Right wing Campaign is controlled by all, but the candidates. All aboard the SWIFTBOAT. God help us!

Mrs. Palin has visited Canada, Mexico, and the Middle East to visit troops and THAT IS IT. It is doubtful that someone with such limited travel experience can truly represent us as president.

This only exemplifies the “Dumbing Down of America”. Talking Points are more important than the root issues. Sarah Palin does not have the worldliness to represent the USA on the world stage. Most of the individuals running countries around the world are highly educated and extremely adept in their chosen arena. I have had the opportunity of living in both North America and Europe. I have travelled extensively throughout the world and I am constantly amazed by how similar “Humanity” is everywhere. Sarah Palin has a pre-conceived and well programmed misconception about our world and that ignorance will be translated in to a major catastrophe if she and McCain are elected in November. What I don’t understand is why the American people cannot see through this veneer.
