Damon: Palin Phenom ‘Like a Really Bad Disney Movie’Posted on Sep 10, 2008
Thespian and concerned citizen Matt Damon would like some answers about this Sarah Palin person we keep hearing about whose unlikely career arc might just catapult the bouffant-wearing hockey mom from the snowy wilds of Wasilla, Alaska, into an international staring match with tiger-slaying Russian judo master Vladimir Putin. For example, says Damon, “I need to know if she really thinks dinosaurs were here 4,000 years ago ... because she’s gonna have the nuclear codes.”

He brings up a few interesting points, but don’t forget that on the other side of the coin, Barack is even scarier as he’s a socialist and who knows what horror will become of our country if he becomes president!

I happen to be a registered Republican with a strong background in Math and Science (Masters degree from Johns Hopkins). Although I tend to scoff at most opinions offered up by entertainers, there are a few, like Mr. Damon whom I will give a moment of my time - he atteneded Harvard afterall you know… even if he dropped out to pursue $$ in Tinsel Town!!
Concerning the actuarial tables, Matt simply mispoke. McCain’s chances of living EIGHT more years (not 4) are about 68%... or almost 1 in 3 that he does not live. For a 4 year term, his chances of survival jump to 86%.
And for the (non math major) who commented below about adding the figures in the actuarial tables… you can’t do that. Individual probabilities must be multiplied to obtain a joint probabilty. So you figure the probability of survival for one year (1-prob of death) and mult that by the probability for each additional year. Here are the figures for the other candidates:
Candidate (age) / Prob Alive after 4yrs / Prob Alive after 8 yrs
McCain (72) / 86% / 68%
Palin (44) / 98% / 96%
Obama (47) / 98% / 95%
Biden (67) / 92% / 82%
As for the dinosaur comment. I chuckled. That’s kinda funny actually. I think it was meant to be too, but I hope Matt doesn’t think that ALL Christians think the Earth is 6000 years old. I’m a Christian and I most certainly do not think that, nor do I believe that a proper interpretation of the Old Testament requires one to believe that. But that’s another whole topic.
So, Matt is right to be concerned. I hope she doesn’t think dinos were kicking the ancient Sumerians asses either. That would be silly and a good reason NOT to be in the White House or anywhere near it.

“Your side?” Frank? Do you really buy that we are on opposite sides? Maybe you should get out MORE…
Sounds like you might believe that drivel about artist and actors not being “allowed” to speak out. Well have you figured out that the BIGGEST actors of all time are most of the politicians who lie to us on a daily basis? Step out of the box my friend…

Maybe Matt Damon doesn’t know that for about 20 years now commanders in the field have had the right to use tactical nuclear weapons in battle situations without prior approval from anyone in Washington. Some of these people hold the rank of colonel. It’s a brave new world.

Actually, it’s 6000 years ago. Noah launched his behemoth laden vessel during bad weather 6000 years ago according to Palin. She’s running on that ticket.

She is being kept hidden because she has committed dastardly deeds in Alaska and they don’t want anyone to ask her about them. If Charles Gibson, who after watching his actions when Hillary and Barack were in their debate, gives Palin the really revealing questions then and only then will I believe he is not a racist. He treated Obama like he was a criminal. So if he doesn’t give her the questions that America is asking, then I want them to let someone like Roland Martin ask her some questions.

OK, here’s the deal- in language as simple and irrefutable as I can make it:
If you are happy with the way things are in America right now, vote for the people who made it that way.
If you think we are on a disastrous path and want things to improve, vote for the people who will honestly try to bring about those improvements.
It’s really very simple, but as we have proven in the past, so are we…
All the rest is noise.

You go, Matt! More of Obama’s surrogates need to be out there slinging the hash, following Matt’s lead. This was well and simply put, and, yes, the idea of a President Palin is frightening, especially someone with her narrow view of morality. Can you imagine what the Supreme Court would look like under this woman?
The people voting for McCain/Palin will vote for them regardless of their positions, that’s what’s frightening about their voters. That people could cast a vote for someone because they think “she’s kinda like me” means our civic discourse is bottom drawer.

Rob not a whiff of concern has come up about Obamas career, voting record, or personal life? What planet have you been on the past 6 months? This guy’s been dragged through the coals on every irrelevant issue from flag lapel pins to “uppity” to church attendance.
Furthermore, your concerns are based on a guilt by association test something no candidate could ever pass. Instead, your concerns should be based on what theyve accomplished, how theyve voted, where they stand on the issues.
Palin could only be put out there as a viable candidate by a party that understands most American voters are essentially clueless, ignorant or arrogant or a combination of all three. The script for this campaign has been lifted right off the scripts of reality TV its all about smoke and mirrors, spin and entertainment; nothing about substance or truth.
That Palin was put forth as a vice-presidential candidate speaks volumes about the pathetic state of American politics. I mean really, in this wealthy, resource-rich, 230-year-old democracy of over 300 million residents, shes the best they could find? Lets get real. We should ALL be ashamed. And, as dasm said, Be very afraid.

Yeah.., sure. I get Damon’s point on a Palin presidency that is very unlikely to occur in the next 4 yrs. But this Obama dude has been around for 4 yrs now, and not a whiff of concern has come up about a “community organizer” who has a history of rubbing shoulders with admitted terrorists (Yes, AFTER he was 8 yrs old) and attending the “GD America” church having the nuclear codes. At least Palin would point the nukes away from our own homefront. I say that figuratively of course, I don’t really believe Obama would nuke us.

Aren’t they of the same party as the criminals now in Washington? Is war peace? Is freedom slavery? Are lies truth? Orwell is turning over in his grave.

No question even more disaster is ahead if we have another Bush administration, but why don’t the Dems shout from every roof top about Palin’s past and MaCain’s warmongering record.
Report thisReminds me of the debates between Kerry and Bush in 04. Almost anyone familar with the issues and privy to so much data about the criminal behavior of Bush/Cheney would have simply shown what Bush incorporated really are. But no, instead we had two members of Skull and Bones debating each other. It was very clear that, the Dems and Kerry did not care who won and I think it’s the same now too. The same old one party system is going to win again.

President Palin is a terrifying scenario and here’s one that’s even scarier: If a no-nothing character from an implausible movie script can flip the country as she’s done, you better believe that Rove and his compadres will soon be haunting the second rung beauty pageants for a whole bevy of Palins that they can groom in low level political posts and then use as fronts for their political machinations that will last until the country’s done for. Far-fetched? The current movie Matt Damon is talking about is far-fetched too, but we could soon be living it. I don’t know who I’m disgusted with more—Palin or the American public, who seem to care more about being sold a tube of toothpaste (I see Palin as Pepsodent, don’t you?) than voting in their best interests and on the issues.

I really don’t care about dinosaurs that much; I am far more concerned about how this will affect my family. Does she agree with the Bush Administration on Iraq, on the economy, on deregulation of everything? We know she agrees with them on oil, on judges, on destruction of the environment. I don’t care that she believes in creation. I’ll give it to her. God created the heavens and the earth some time in the past. I wasn’t there I don’t know about it. I don’t care. This election is about the future and that’s my concern. She does not, if John McCain were to die in office, have the knowledge, skills or capability to lead this country out of the abyss created by the Bush Administration.
Gov. Palin is uniquely unqualified for this job and, of course, this was a purely political pick. I just cannot believe that anyone with an IQ over 70 would even consider voting for this woman and the old fool who picked her.

Matt Damon is right to call the McCain/Palin ticket a scary scenario. Another cause for concern is the casual role some of these media pundits are playing in this scary scenario. Earlier today, I read that ABCs Gibson has been selected to interview Palin, and I also read HE does not feel there is a need to ask Palin about personal things like her less than mainstream religious activities, and her spouses involvement with the Alaskan Independence Party. Since both issues involve potential conflicts with U.S. policies and principles, one has to wonder about the level of the interviewers ability, knowledge and/or intent.
Im sure Alaskans know about all about the Alaskan Independence Party, but most Americans in the lower 48 do not know much of anything about this group. Some news agencies report the Party is primarily interested in getting the vote to say whether or not Alaska can secede from the U.S., but we dont have a clue as to how the group rates on Homeland Securitys five color-coded threat scale, and, clearly, the public has a right to know before they vote. Is Palin’s husband and the Alaskan Independence Party a risk? If so, how do they rate?
Severe (red): severe risk
High (orange): high risk
Elevated (yellow): significant risk
Guarded (blue): general risk
Low (green): low risk
In regard to the second issue, Palin is a well-known religious community activist. As Mayor of Wasilla and Governor of Alaska she has openly discussed her views on a variety of religious issues with the general public, particularly abortion. What may not be so well known, however, are Palins views and activities involving the concept of dispensationalism. A view, which some leaders describe as being potentially destructive for the long-range survival of Israel. [Rabbi Michael Lerner]
http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/10052007/transcript2.html
Surely, ABCs Gibson is aware of the concerns that people like Rabbi Lerner and the rest of us have about dispensationist activities. And since Palin has openly discussed her religious views and perspective in the process of performing duties as Governor of Alaska - particularly in connection with the Alaskan pipeline project - one can hardly claim such views are suddenly private when it involves the lower 48 states. Again, this issue as well as others needs to be addressed by interviewers like ABCs Gibson. To avoid them is simply unfair to the American public.

Damon says if you look up the actuarial tables there is a one in three chance that McCain will die within the next four years.
Report thisI’d really like to know which tables he’s been using because the actuarial tables supplied by the U.S. government indicate a one in seven chance, NOT a one in three chance.
Take a look at http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/STATS/table4c6.html
If you add up the four years for males from ages 72 to 75 you get 0.151985 which translates to about 1/7th or one in 7.

It just might be a pig. John McCain is certainly a pig with his boarish behavior, not that I think Obama intended it that way and who could blame him if he did so subconsciously or even consciously. No wonder Bush wants him to succeed, we could actually have a worse president than him if he wins. Were the stakes not so high I would actually like to see John McCain handle whats’a coming - but then again he’s in on the fix anyway. What I love is these good christians, Bush and Palin justa lyin every chance they get. I’m sure Jesus is so proud.

Yes, Matt Damon, Palin really does believe in creationism, she really does want books banned, she really is against women’s rights, she really did say that the Iraq war is an act of God, she really did fire most of her officials when she got into power, and yes, her church really thinks the U.S. is doomed, and when that happens, survivors will flock to Alaska as the haven for all believers. Yes, that is Sarah Palin. And that’s why McCain won’t let her speak to anyone. Be very afraid.
