“Let’s give the Lord a hand for our governor,” says Ed Kalnin, senior pastor at the Wasilla Assembly of God Church, after Sarah Palin holds forth about the role of God’s will in her work as Alaska’s governor in this widely circulated clip from Palin’s visit to her former church last June.

The church she now attends, Wasilla Bible Church, is drawing attention for sponsoring a conference that will focus on the power of prayer to “transform the lives of those impacted by homosexuality”—or “pray away the gay,” as this report puts it.

So Sarah, tell me.  If the soldiers in Iraq are “on a mission from God” and George Bush was the one who gave the order to invade, does that make George Bush God’s messenger?  You know, like Moses?

Do you think it’s God’s mission because you believe that the war in Iraq was necessary to bring us the Armageddon your pastor talked about at the end of the sermon when he said people would be coming to your church from the lower 48?  Is that the plan you have for America?  For the world?

WHEN FACISM COMES TO AMERICA. . .IT WILL BE CLOAKED IN THE FLAG AND CARRYING A CROSS”

I THINK SINCLAIR LEWIS MUST HAVE HAD AN INSIGHT INTO THE 2008 ELECTION WHEN HE WROTE THIS. . .

NOT TO MENTION THE “HERO WORSHIP” OF THE U.S. MILITARY. . .AND OUR FLAG.  THE ONLY TIME IN RECENT HISTORY THAT I CAN REMEMBER WHERE A NATION WAVED MORE FLAGS AND INVOKED MORE DIVISIVE “RELIGION” THAN RIGHT NOW WOULD HAVE TO BE THE NAZI POLITICAL PARTY OF 1930 - 1939.

FOR ALL YOU AMERICANS WHO ARE NOT RELIGIOUS. . .OR MAY EVEN BELIEVE IN GOD. . .BUT ARE NOT WILLING TO BLINDLY ACCEPT THAT OUR ENTIRE GOVERNMENT AND ALL THE DECISIONS THAT OUR NATION MAKES SHOULD BE DECIDED UPON BY A GROUP OF RELIGIOUOS ZEALOTS. . .BE AFRAID!!!  THERE WILL BE WARS AND RUMORS OF WAR - AND NATION WILL RISE UP AGAINST NATION”  I WOULD EXPECT NOTHING LESS OF McCAIN-PALIN.

ACTUALLY, I ALMOST FEEL SORRY FOR THAT OLD MAN. . .HE KNOWS NOT WHAT HE HAS DONE!  FOR A MAN WHO NEVER REALLY TOUCHED THE RELIGIOUS ISSUE BEFORE I DON’T THINK HE REALIZES HOW RUTHLESS AND DRIVEN THESE WACKOS ARE. . .LET US “PRAY” THAT AMERICA REALIZES THAT AN EXTREMIST IS AN EXTREMIST. . .NO MATTER WHAT RELIGION THEY QUOTE!  WE ARE NOT A NATION OF FUNDAMENTALISTS. . .NO MATTER WHAT THE RNC TELLS US. . .WE NEVER HAVE BEEN. . .AND IF WE ELECT THIS GROUP. . I WILL HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO TRY TO MOVE FROM THE FORSAKEN NATION!!!

McCain’s pick of this political novice and religious nut poses a grave danger to all of us and the world.  Her religion is her business; however, when she introduces her religion into the political arena, then it is the business of all of us.  Her religion is what we called “Holy Rollers” where I grew up in rural KY, and the Bible speaks of those who speak in tongues as “babies in Christ” and as babbling fools! She is laughable.  What a bleak message the USA would present to the world if she and McCain are elected!

I find it ironic that the “religious right” seems to conveniently forget that Jesus was a community organizer, and
Pontius Pilate was a Governor.

What was the mental age of that person I heard talking, admittedly unscripted? To imagine she could be President is to imagine the realization of the American nightmare. Heaven help the rest of us.

Re: wildflower

Great post.  An excerpt from that:

“And everyone—all the rest of us so they’re welcoming us now—with open arms and saying, “Oh, we love the Jewish people” But they love the Jewish people literally to death because they they want see those of us who stay Jews burn in hell but not—not right away. They don’t imagine it will happen right away. So there’s a staged process.”

I understand Rabbi Lerner’s meaning in the context in which he said it.  However, I would like to add that it isn’t ONLY Jews who do not convert that will die.  They’re are going to “love us ALL to death”, that is ....ANYONE who doesn’t convert.

Remind anyone of any other time in history….?  Hmmm….

Re: in doubt post

But placing a “dispensationalist” like Palin in the VP position is a critical issue.  The last thing we need is an extremist in the White House.  They are a very active element in the Israel Lobby:

BILL MOYERS: . . . give me a shorthand definition of dispensationalism.

DR. TIMOTHY WEBER: . . . the basic premise of dispensationalism is that all Bible prophecies concerning earthly events applies to the Jews. And all of those events will be fulfilled literally in the End Times. So, Israel must be returned to the land. They must stay in the land. Without Israel in the land, there can be none of the other events prophesied in the Bible. There can be no rise of Anti-Christ. . . There can be no Battle of Armageddon. And there can be no second coming of Jesus Christ. So everything is riding on the Jews, getting them there and keeping them there in the Holy Land.

RABBI MICHAEL LERNER: But I think—but what you have to add in there is that when this is a step in the process that they see towards the end of end times in which the Jews will be cast down into eternal damnation and to the fires of hell. And only those Jews who convert to Christianity will be okay. And everyone—all the rest of us so they’re welcoming us now—with open arms and saying, “Oh, we love the Jewish people” But they love the Jewish people literally to death because they they want see those of us who stay Jews burn in hell but not—not right away. They don’t imagine it will happen right away. So there’s a staged process. And this is the first stage in the process that will eventually lead either to us converting totally to Christianity or burning in hell. So it’s not a really great future for the Jews that those theological people have in mind. . .

BILL MOYERS: They are being used, right?

RABBI MICHAEL LERNER: Yes. This is the other terrible part about the role that Christian Zionists play. Because they’ve been aligned with the most right-wing elements in Israel and the most right-wing elements in the American Jewish community—that have gathered together in the Israel lobby. And the Israel lobby includes AIPAC, the American-Israel Public Affairs Committee, and many other of the Israel-is-always-right organizations in the Jewish world have played the role of supporting the most reactionary policies in Israel. And that—
BILL MOYERS: Isn’t this an act of survival?

RABBI MICHAEL LERNER: Well, they think it’s survival. But, in fact, for a very large number of Jews today, both in Israel and in the United States, recognize that the policies that Israel has been following has actually been destructive for the long-range survival of Israel. And so they are an element, the Christian Zionists are really an important element in the Israel lobby today, pushing the United States towards support of the most conservative and unloving policies.

Wow! What a ticket - an Armageddon advocate and a senior Senator who sings, “Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran” to old Beach Boy tunes at public assemblies.  The Republican Party sure knows how to make the children of this Nation look forward to the future.

Is time to stop the baloney and focus on the issues .I believe Americans deserve solutions to their problems. The only way to come to a decision is the debates between the candidates not only for president but also for vicepresident. If Sarah Palin is so good on the issues like the Republicans says then let’s roll. But don’t start use the gender pretext if she said she a pit-bull then no more bulls

Bush/Cheney used religion for political purposes; Palin intends to use politics for religious pruposes.  Big difference there.
