Goodman arrest

According to the “Democracy Now!” Web site, producers Sharif Abdel Kouddous and Nicole Salazar were arrested Monday afternoon “while they carried out their journalistic duties in covering street demonstrations at the Republican National Convention,” and host Amy Goodman was arrested for “defending her colleagues and the freedom of the press.”

Democracy Now!:

All three were violently manhandled by law enforcement officers. Abdel Kouddous was slammed against a wall and the ground, leaving his arms scraped and bloodied. He sustained other injuries to his chest and back. Salazar’s violent arrest by baton-wielding officers, during which she was slammed to the ground while yelling, “I’m Press! Press!,” resulted in her nose bleeding, as well as causing facial pain. Goodman’s arm was violently yanked by police as she was arrested.

On Tuesday, Democracy Now! will broadcast video of these arrests, as well as the broader police action. These will also be available on: www.democracynow.org

[...] Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher told Democracy Now! that Kouddous and Salazar were arrested on suspicion of rioting, a felony. While the three have been released, they all still face charges stemming from their unlawful arrest. Kouddous and Salazar face pending charges of suspicion of felony riot, while Goodman has been officially charged with obstruction of a legal process and interference with a “peace officer.”

Democracy Now! forcefully rejects all of these charges as false and an attempt at intimidation of these journalists. We demand that the charges be immediately and completely dropped.

“Don’t want to discuss it
I think its time for a change
You may get disgusted
And think I’m strange
In that case I’ll go underground
Get some heavy rest
Never have to worry
About what is worst and what is best”

So, now, do you start to see just where your democracy has gone.  Poof, in 8 short years, gone.  And you won’t get it back, guaranteed.  Never, in my 63 years, have I heard or seen this in Amerika.  It’s far worse than ‘68; no comparison.

Just realized i called Mr Kouddous by his father’s first name. My apologies.

A lot of people outside the US are disturbed by these flourishes of authoritarian behaviour in a so-called modern democracy.

That’s the trick isn’t it? To keep up the appearance of democracy in an authoritarian state?

Prove you are a democracy, USA. You are the most powerful country of all: if you can’t keep it straight the whole world is profoundly affected.

And we are watching you closely.
