McGovern Switches to Obama

However one feels about Hillary Clinton, there’s something sad about former presidential candidate George McGovern’s announcement that he no longer supports Clinton and is backing her rival. Clinton worked for McGovern 36 years ago, when he campaigned against another unpopular war.

I do get your point Peter RV. Thing is, the danger to Obama will exist regardless of who the vice president is. UNLESS, he were to select somebody that would make him assassination proof, just as Bush has been made impeachment-proof, because of Dick Cheney.

But, Obama wouldn’t do that. (select somebody as horrible as Dick Cheney, just to assure that nobody would do away with him).

So yeah, there’s always a risk, and he’s had to consider that. Thing is, the fear of such risk can never be allowed to stop us, even though we know that was the purpose in the assassinations of MLK and Bobby Kennedy. It seemed to work too. Look how long it’s been, with us just going backwards instead of forward?

Meantime, I’m going to hope that Obama has enough sense to know that Hillary CAN NOT, and SHOULD NOT be his choice for a running mate. He’ll have a big enough job to deal with as it is, which means he’ll need HELP, not Hillary. (someone on this site suggested he’d need a food taster if he brought Hillary in as VP, and I’m in agreement).

Actually, he has (it would seem) lots of choices. I would be happy to see any of many...Edwards, Kucinich, Ted Kennedy, (though I don’t see him as all that interested in doing it...hell, I’m tired myself, and he’s got nearly 2 decades on me) Do these politicians take special vitamins or something?

Anyway, let’s just hope that there is no nonsense talk of Hillary as VP. My nerves couldn’t take it.

This is the type of blathering, bellicose, rhetoric that has the entire world hating us. Threatening to destroy Iran with nuclear weapons if they attack Israel is so stupid, it’s unbelievable. First of all, we give Israel $3-10 billion (who knows how much it really is?)in aid every year. If they can’t protect themselves with all that money, why are we giving it to them?  Second, Israel has a significant nuclear arsenal of its own, no doubt part of the reason why the other countries want them too. Third, we have no defense treaties with Israel that I am aware of, and only Congress can make treaties or declare war...a little fact that a Yale-trained lawyer should know. I keep hearing that Israel is our friend...what have they done for us lately?  Send more people to spy on us? Fourth, Iran has a common border with Russia...if we used nuclear weapons against Iran, where would the radioactive fallout drift to...or would that just be too bad? Fifth...are we also willing to take the lives of hundreds of thousands of innocent men, women and children?  Would the UN stand for it? Finally, what if the Mullahs and religious leaders of Iran don’t care about dying, and want us to do this as a prelude to their world-wide jihad?  Ultimately, we are being pushed into a strategy of a pre-emptive military strike...and like the Lone ranger, we never kill anyone, we just shoot the gun out of their hands, and render them harmless.  I’m sorry, the real world doesn’t work this way.  Since our milirary intelligence is so bad, I doubt if we could even determine who initiated an attack from where.

@Cyrena,
There will be a pressure on Barack to accept Hillary as a running mate, it is naive to think that AIPAC would give up easily to install their manchurian candidate.
Racist are, of course, on all sides, what I meant to say is that it woud be easy to hire a hitman of theirs to do the job.
(If I wanted to dissociate myself completely from the racists in the U.S., I would have to live in some cave in the Rockies)

I think it’s sad.

Nothing in the world sadder than watching a good structure implode, just because someone wants the property to make more money.

Hillary is the woman who could, but didn’t. Because she put her faith in the almighty dollar instead of the sanity of her constituents.

Go back to that war vote.

I’ve been told by aids that letters and calls from home were running ten to one against the war. Hillary went with the war profiteers. That doesn’t make her unique, the same can be said for all the congressaurs who voted to give Bush absolute power over life and death of the innocents abroad. But they aren’t running for president.

I agree Peter RV...at least about the part on this being a racist country. I would only say that it appears we may finally be moving beyond that...at least little by little.

I don’t believe that the selection of Hillary as a running mate is even in the air, let alone on anyone’s mind, including hers. She has said far too many times that she would never agree to that spot, and I believe that.

As for Ron Paul, we’ve been there before, so we’ll have to agree to disagree on him as well. I AM semi-sorry that he didn’t have more of an opportunity to put himself out there so that folks could have a chance to hear more from him, and have him more thoroughly vetted.

I know that his supporters don’t want to believe it, but there is racism underlying his agenda as well, even if it is not immediately obvious, and maybe not even intentional.

Meantime, Obama will be the nominee, and he will of course will the election in November, because most folks rational enough to vote at all, will elect him.

It’s a new dawn and a new day, and we won’t have many more unless we do something right to reverse this course of fascism. For me, it’s that simple.

We have to start by first STOPPING THE DESTRUCTION.

Clinton has made it very easy for me to switch parties. She has demonstrated all that is necessary to see that her party is inept and mean-spirited.

When McG was deflated by Reagan he completely disappeared from sight beyond the political horizon where he should have remained forever. This mealy-mouthed politician was qualified to lead a boy-scout group but not our national government. Lionizing him today is utterly ridiculous.

@Cyrena,
What integrity are you talking about?
McGowern, the the original antiwar ideolog was backing this “obliterating Iran” bitch.
This looks more like opportunism or senility than integrity.
And the unity of the Democrats for November? I most certainly would hope not. This would mean Obama “choosing” Hillary for his running mate, in which case he can count me out (I can always write in for Ron Paul).
It would also be extremely foolish of him to do so.
This would place Hillary at ONE BULLET AWAY FROM BEING PRESIDENT. Knowing of what filth Clintons and the AIPAC are capable of, I wouldn’t be surprised if Obama’s Presidency wouldn’t last even as long as JFK’s. We live in a racist country Cyrena, can’t you see what happened to Rev. Wright but NOT to Rev.Hagee?
I would say anybody but Hillary (but then I remembered a certain Joe Lieberman and the likes)

H. Clinton long ago abandoned the ideals that brought her to the McGovern campaign.  Her behavior during the campaign has been appalling.  With her as president a solution in Iraq would be left to her successor.  My question is, What took McGovern so long?
Whether or not Obama will be better than HC is another question but he is the only one who offers any hope.

I hope you’re right Aegrus.

I’m counting on it. I should definitely do the same. I feel like I’VE been campaigning. smile

I don’t think it’s difficult. There is a sense in the air everyone is coming down off the campaign urgency and stubbornness. This endorsement shows me Dems will be united in the Fall.

So, there we have it. No doubt a difficult move for the former Sentator McGovern, and I appreciate his integrity and leadership in the face of what it a difficult time for all of us.
