Rev. Wright

Lesser journalists continue to characterize the Rev. Jeremiah Wright’s sermons as hate speech, without ever having heard more than snippets of them. As Wright tells the great Bill Moyers, the meaning of his sermons has been deliberately distorted to achieve a political goal, and it worked.

Barack Obama seems to have survived the encounter. Will his former pastor?

If you haven’t already, be sure to watch the extended clips of Wright’s sermons and make up your own mind.

Below are highlights from an exclusive interview with Wright, which aired Friday on PBS.

Update: Video and a transcript of the full interview can be found here.

Do you people mean to tell me that Obama’s WHITE mother and WHITE grandmother would take him to a church for 20 years that is teaching him to hate his mother, grandmother and half of himself? Doesn’t make any sense at all, the numbers do not add up at all. What Obama said was pretty evident of the truth. HE SAID THAT NEVER IN THE 20 YEARS THAT HE WENT TO THAT CHURCH DID EVER HEAR REV WRIGHT SPEAK SUCH THINGS BEFORE UNTIL OBAMA RAN FOR PRESIDENCY. HE INSULTED OBAMA AND HIS FAMILY BY TELLING HIM THAT HE IS A TRAITOR TO HIS RACE AND A PUPPET TO THE “WHITE DEVIL”, which is why Obama denounced it. It’s common sense people….common sense. Reps believe this stuff because that is what they WANT to believe. They want it to be true because it justifies their own prejudice. Makes me laugh. It’s killing them that a black man won th Presidency, it’s killing them and I love it!!! They deserve it.

Marshall:
  Here’s some help:
1. The CIA creating HIV/AIDS is unproven.

2. The U.S. is an imperialistic, fascist nation run by an oligarchy.

3. The U.S. has ,and still does, incite the ire and disdain of MANY foreign nations.

4. The U.S. govt, with the C.I.A. as it’s proxy, did sponsor the importation of drugs into America during the Iran-Contra scandals of the eighties; and if you were to look at the lower tier members of Bush’s cabinet you will find many participants of that treasonous times.

5. The U.S. may not have given Hussein the biological weaponry, but they were aware of his capabilities and supplied him with other arms and munitions during his eighties confrontations with Iran.

So CJ, I’m trying to figure out what you’re saying in your rambling post.  Maybe you can help me out.

- Do you believe the CIA created HIV and unleashed it on blacks?  Wright does.

- Do you believe the U.S. is an imperialistic, terrorist nation?  Wright does.

- Do you believe the U.S. brought 9/11 upon itself and that it’s well-deserved payback?  Wright does.

- Do you believe the U.S. govt. gives drugs to the black community?

Wright believes all these things, including the myth that the U.S. gave biological weapons to Iraq which they then used.

Wright is a repository for practically every groundless conspiracy theory and anti-american sentiment of the far left AND far right (yes, the far left and far right have much in common).

Do you believe these things?

cognizant.  Am peeved at Obama.  Well, we do need a “black” president.  But could he stop US military bases world wide and admitthere is a 9/11 coverup.
Let us direct Obama to patriotsquestion9/11 and allow him to comprehend he should lose the presidency if he has to lie to get there.

I happened to catch Moyers’ program that night. On just about every point, Rev. Wright has it straight. The HIV thing is open to debate. His opinion is founded on a book a guy whose name escapes me at the moment wrote. After hearing a snippet of what that writer has to say, it’s not impossible HIV was introduced, at least by someone at some point, meaning it didn’t just appear in Africa more or less outta the blue. That introduction of HIV was a conspiracy is not a notion that Wright introduced to the world. Though to hear media carry on—in usual fashion—one would think Wright originated the notion. Naturally, media has gone after him most on that point, what with far-better documented facts of which Wright speaks involving truths to be avoided at all cost.

Moyers should have asked Wright about his belief in conspiracy theory of HIV. But not a big deal that he didnÂ’t. Maybe just as well, actually.

Moyers did a good job, and I think that by showing Wright respect he deserves he extracted thoughtful answers.

Yesterday, Wright was not respectful to a media that deserves no respect, given sheer unwillingness to cop to their own and other corporate doings. (Hedges wrote a good piece here wherein he mentioned corporate AmericaÂ’s coup de tat, which I think not in process but completed some time ago. Hedges has become one of those rare voices of conscience, along with likes of Chomsky, [Michael] Parenti and Zinn.)

Mega-mediaÂ’s failure to report on facts within the meanest of historical contexts is also well known, or so one keeps on hoping will become well known. Stenographers are in an uproar over Wright, personnel enjoying themselves enough, each in turn taking his or her shot at the reverend. Some have been slightly more rational than others. Although even those most rational are at best meagerly so.

Big media has become positively creepy, aside from contemptuous and long engaged in dissembling when not in outright dishonesty—factually (often by omission), intellectually (assuming intellect at all) and especially morally. Couple of exceptions on occasion.

Obama today did his level best to disown his past pastor. He had too of course. CanÂ’t be taken for a serious candidate for president by big media if one goes around speaking much truth. ItÂ’s worth noting considerable irony: Yesterday, Wright spoke of Obama posturing for political purposes. Today, Obama confirmed what Wright said about that at the same Barack complained of exactly that statement, among others.

As for whether or not the U.S. is terrorist, certainly, by standard set forth in the ArmyÂ’s Field Manual. And, more importantly, as set forth in Geneva Conventions. No empire in history has had more blood on its hands than this one. And yes, America was built by slaves and then by slave-wagers atop the dead bodies of Native Americans, also lied to, cheated, taken advantage of, treated like so many tree stumps in the way of Manifest Destiny.

No one should ever point out facts of history, not without providing endless excuses when it might be necessary—for some hard-to-imagine reason in the context of current culture—to speak of history. If any so-called VIP is thinking of doing so, better take note of ride-him-outta-town-on-a-rail mentality on the part of big-media propagandists, politicians, et al. who might be influential at the national-ist level.

See no evil, hear no evil, speak no truth. Or elseÂ… Power wonÂ’t tolerate that sorta thing on the part of any who possesses even a modicum of actual power. The rest of us can vent all day and night. PowerÂ’s just fine with that, happy to note venting in fact, including truth, so long as it leads nowhere.

I hate to break that all American bubble Lee, but many many folks returned from Vietnam without a lot of sympathy for the US government… Guess what?  Most of them were white!

AND if you watch the Moyers video, you’ll learn that Wright is much more patriotic then many of the folks here at TD…

I don’t know if I am “patriotic” in today’s sense of the word… what does it mean to be “patriotic?

I love my Country, but hate its government.

I also have faith we can do better than we have… I have the experience to know we probably won’t!

I am simply going to disagree with you sir. I want to thank you for your service to this country. As I have repeated many times I am a democrat and I hope I am wrong about Obama. I share many of his hopes and dreams for this country. I appreciate that he has choosen to climb a difficult mountain. While I may disagree that his time is now, he is an important voice in our party. While I hope I am wrong and that America is ready to elect a man who has put race out there as the number one issue for us to confront at the same time we have so many other important challenges, I fear that those who choose to see Rev. Wright as a racist are going to be far more plentiful than those who will take the time to get to know the man and his larger message.

You sound like a very strong and reasonable person. I respect your opinion, but if you think I’m the problem, then I have to respectfully disagree. I think Obama could have won on Hope and Change as the theme of his campaign. Unfortunately the theme has changed to racial issues and that can only hurt him and his aspirations to be President. Rev. Wright is hurting Obama everytime he opens his mouth, regardless of whether the message is correct or not. My best to you and your family. I meant no disrespect in any of my posts.

WRIGHT CHALLENGES PRESIDENT CLINTON TO DEDATE

Immediately after his appearance at the National Press Club, Reverend Jeremiah Wright challenged former president Bill Clinton to a debate - “anytime. any place”.  His rationale being questioned by reporters, Wright explained that since each of them had been deemed influential in the campaigns of the two remaining Democratic candidates, it was important to clear the air and debate their views and their contributions to the public dialogue surrounding the campaigns.

Suggested debate locations included Little Rock, Nantucket, and South Side Chicago. As for format, the Reverand said that he preferred a Lincoln-Douglas style debate. If moderators were to be used, he said his preference would be for Chris Wallace and Chris Matthews.

Reverend Wright went on to state that his suggestion for a debate was made with all due humility and that he would be honored just to appear on the same platform with a member of one of the most elite couples in America.

“There is a time for everything and a season for everything under the heavens.”

The time for fear and hate is past. The season for resisting reality is over. The reality is the gray states lost the civil war to the blue states. Result: We are now the United States of America.

The whole world has no desire and evolving humanity has no need to see the south rise again.

That, Joe Sixpack, is the message of President Barack Obama. That, is reality. Your “Yells Shut UP” and desire for perpetual defensiveness is not real. It’s just your personal wishful thinking and denial of today’s reality. How could you mistake President Obama for Bill O’Rielly? Some would describe such thinking as delusional. I tend to agree, as i read post after post of people sharing factual logic with you and witness you continue, with missionary zeal,  proclaim deliberate unfounded false statements, repeatedly.

Rather than engage you in any manner that might be remotely uncharitable let me rush to explain that as a natural born citizen of this country, U.S. Army Vet. and Father of an 18 year old son just peeking into his adult future this is a time for the very best that each of us can muster.

Old ignorant colonial thinking, and White racist interpretations of human beings and other important parts of universal reality have NO place in my son’s and his grandchildren’s and their peer’s bright and beautiful future.

I was introduced to Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. over 20 years ago via a message titled “What Makes You So Strong?” I was captivated by both his spiritual gifting and his scholarship. Since then I have come to appreciate him more and more. How could anyone with an ounce of humanity not stand and salute the success of another human being who has accomplished what has occurred out of 36 years of this man’s devoted life? Accomplishments that include developing an 87 member congregation into an eight thousand member community that is now doing global ministry and changing the lives of hurting human beings in 87 countries across the world.

Add to all this Trinity United Church of Christ’s ministry to the South side of Chicago and the preparation of the President of the United States of America in this the most critical time in our nation’s history.

Personally I do not agrre with the extra Biblical teachings of John Hagee, Rod Parsley and other end time pseudo prophets of doom. Such is a blight and slander to the existence of Jesus and Abraham. However we have been so miseducated for so long in this country that our relation to certain truth have made many of us like people who prefer feces to ice cream.

Barack Obama JD and Jeremiah A. Wright PhD did not mess us up. They might be our surest way out of the mess we are in.

Think back Joe,

Who was it that put the word “Elitist” in your mouth?

In your own words right now without referring to a dictionary tell us what is an Elitist.

Why is it ok with you to be such a tool for the White elite?

Why the low self esteem?

Like “Tax ‘n spend”, “Cut ‘n Run” etc. it has been your White brothers and sisters like Mr. and Clinton and Karl Rove who deemed you too stupid to be able to handle a whole sentence. So they just bypass your mind and put talking points in your mouth and send you forth like Johnny Appleseed. And you needing to feel a sense of belonging provide them with “FREE” labor. They make millions and you get the consolation prize. You get to fear and hate Black people and doubt every bit of greatest in any Black human being who is not an athlete or entertainer.

Dr. Wright and President Obama are public servants bearing solid evidence of thorough preparation and career excellence.

You lack the capacity for critical thinking. You can correct your personal problem.

Lose your need to have an enemy dear brother, and life becomes a lot sweeter.

Gmonst! Excellent post indeed. Yes, Rev. Wright is indeed one of the very true Christians who are true followers of the true Jesus Christ. And the essence of the true message of Christ is that he became at odds with his own people when he criticized and fought against their falsehoods and erring ways.

But the Christianity we have today is a very much diluted form of the original teachings of Christ, with a high dose mixture of both Zionism, capitalism and militarism.

Here’s the deal folks ...

The good “christian” right, pretend, conservative republicans want their man McCain in the White House. Not because they particularly like McCain, but because they really like keeping their boot on the neck of everybody but themselves. The fact that even THEY cant agree on exactly what is right and what is wrong is beside the point. Having an unholy control on politics and money and a very unholy relationship with corporate profit, the control and power [and money] is really all that counts.

Any non-repub in the White House has to be viewed as a threat. The only candidate out there who truly has/had the ability to turn repubs to voting outside the “party” in the general election is/was Obama. If Hillary wins the nomination, the dems will not win the White House. There is no way these people are going to allow a woman in that position. Unless perhaps a “Holy Mary Mother of God” type woman comes along, and how soon is that going to happen?

Obama has been pushed off center. Hillary and her people have been very obedient in sucking up the repub line and attacking Obama. And even sadder Hillary has become so enamored of her hype, she actually has slipped into the habit of simply saying whatever pops into her head. Which has tarnished her image, and damaged her credibility. She can’t see it, because she has crossed over the line from “want to serve” to “they adore me.”

And all of that leaves a country very nearly destroyed by repub leadership at the edge of complete annihilation.

Wright was the perfect distraction. So now the repubs have a perfect storm in place ... ready to dump all hell on “we the people.”

Obama, with a great deal of help from the Clinton camp is looking shaky. He isn’t, but with the help of mainstreammedia, Hillary, and every pundit who wants to delusion themselves into believing they know and understand everything, that perception is being pushed on the voting public.

Hillary and her camp are being and have been used by the hard-right, and they are so caught up in their self-love affair, they’ll keep right on doing it. And all we can do is sit by and watch the future get sucked down the drain of more vile repub policy, thanks in no small measure to an obedient Hillary camp.

I fear for our future. I’m not alone.

Unless, or until the body of voting republicans recognize their party has been hi-jacked by a bunch of corrupt, dishonest and unholy money people, the hope for change lies only in fresh faces in Washington.

Fresh faces with an honest commitment to change, who have not yet been polluted by the well that is inside the beltway. The only presidential candidate who comes close to that description is Obama. And the thousands of repub voters who crossed over and voted for Obama in previous primaries prove even they recognize the need for change. And see the hope for change in the candidate Obama.

Any one who watched Bill Moyers interview with Wright, has to see by now, the man has really done nothing wrong. Anyone that has the brains God gave a clam and the decency to be honest with themselves that is.

And by extension, that issue used to attack Obama, while it has served the Hillary camp very well, has provided more fuel to the “Attack a black-man” repubs, who need to, but don’t want to sound “racist.”

And we can thank Hillary’s folks for helping that process along.

Also some parts of the policy (profanity) are vigorously enforced, and other parts “entries ‘signed’ by someone other than the actual author” are almost NEVER enforced. We have had a Thomas Paine, a Benedict Arnold. A George Bush, and an Elliot Spitzer, just to name a few…

and as to “racist, sexist or other discriminatory or hateful language” That must be a tough call. The Jews take a real beating on this site, while “uncle” gets called…

The Rev. Wright quoted a small line in a blues song, I want to die and I lie down with my head on the railroad tracks and when I hean the train whisle, I pull my head back, this feeling for the will to live lived in the black people when they were inslaved.

The reason that after Lincoln did free the slaves they were not considered quality people but with all the reasons “good” Christins said it was o.k. to keep people in bondage was like this, they are like children they need someone to take care of them, they would not know what to do with freedom, they do not have the capacity to be as smart as the white man, they are savaages, the men love to rape white woman they have a tail, like a monkey.
Even the 20th century I went to work in Phila. people used to tell me if you talk to a black man he will try to have sex with you, like men connot control their primitive urges, there is so much that is not true, but no one can understand a people unless you live around them, the same goes with the Mexican people and Rev. Wright has a through understanding of people.

But some people do not really think they just react, like how they were brainwashed as children, and when you reach a certain age you should think for yourselves, if you believe all that you heard on the news you would be afraid to go out your front door.

This man is not crazy just that people do not like to hear the truth.

I listened to what the man said in the speech he gave and when you listen to the whole I can relate to that, this country did the native americans wrong, did the sylphis experiment let men die of this horrible disease let them pass it on to their wives who passed it on to the unborn so that they could be born blind, is this far removed from the HIV controversy I think not, and who knows I have heard this in Oakland, Calif. black people do not hate white people as much as the other way around.

Since I listend to the man and his surmon the man is very smart and very knowledgeable about the bible and human race, in the bible God also kills inocents because did the Paraoh of Egypt deserve to have his first born die, the bible was written by man and some things have a political sway.

People should know more about the black condition before they condem this man, the man worked in the medical field, the man was a marine, not every soldier can be a marine being a marine means a mind that is in control, of course the Rev. Wright has a right to be mad about the injustices of this country, after all what does McCain think about women in the same field not getting the same rate of pay, and believe me it happens in County Government, when Alameda County wanted to save jobs what did they do they hired female managers and paid them less then they would a man, someone tell me about fairness in this country, there is not equal pay for equal work, maybe I could say God D** America and still say I also love America, but this country could be improved, and the best improvement would be to stop thinking of the black race as inferior, people probably do not know it but some of the Pharohas in Egypt were black, just because some Greeks went there do not think that Egypt is a land of mainly white people, people there are biracial or triracial, people have just got to get real.

Reverend Wright represents the very best of what Christianity is supposed to embody.  Tireless service to the community and fearless preaching about social injustice.  I don’t see how anyone could watch his interview on PBS and suggest he is filled with hate, or more ludicrously a racist.  I think he is a credit to the United States.  He represents the kind of outspoken free-spirit that typified the beginnings of this nation.  If one takes the time to watch the whole of this interview, or even to listen to the controversial sound bites in their full context, it should be clear that his point was not one of hate or racism.  He is a straight shooter who calls it like he sees it.  Does he always choose the best words, no, but a look at the accomplishments of his career makes it clear where his heart lies.  Its unfortunate that in this age of sound bites that deep thinking individuals who give messages which can’t be contained within catch phrases, have their words minced up out of context to give the impression that they were saying something completely different than was intended.  It dumbs down the discourse and we are worse off because of it.  The worst part is that I know the mudslingers/racebaiters are really smart enough to understand the meaning of the words, but the need for drama compels them to launch into hyperbole that has no bearing on reality.

You find it laughable? I find it really sad. Obama needed to keep race out of this election and he blew it by letting Wright become an isse. It all started with a very risky strategy of marginalizing the former President by branding him a racist way back when after New Hampshire. It was brilliant to neuter the best campaigner of our modern era. Now way Obama could win without doing it, but by playing the race card he ran the risk that race could define his candidacy. Rev. Wright story broke far to early and now is out there festering. He’s weak on defense and Obama peaked WAY too early. He’s running OK in polls against McCain but the GOP is only just now defining Obama in ways that republicans and independants will find about as appealing as Kerry was to them in ‘04.

Does anyone truly believe that Obama can create the kind of excitement he once did? It’s a long slide to November and Obama is already completely defensive.

Having just watched the interview with Bill Moyers I can only conclude that the Rev Wright is a brilliant man and religious leader. As he pointed out, and I already knew, the selection of comments out of context is politically motivated - one of the favorite republican tactics.

Susan Jacoby is certainly right in calling attention to the dumbing down of America - and the Rev Wright descrives it in detail. The fact that he quotes Martin Marty clinched it for me since I respect MM highly. And now I also respect Rev. Wright.

well, that’s a fair enough criticism, and Hillary is extremely adept at recalling policy in a lucid, coherent fashion. By the way, I think those values are the same as Barack’s and Hillary’s for the most part.

Still, I think the only reason Obama doesn’t go into great detail is because most of his ideas make up twenty page reports, whereas Hillary’s are much shorter and concise. Clinton’s policy platforms are kind of tried and true ideas, and Obama’s involve a lot of theory and untested ideas. This is something I’ve said before, and I understand if that makes people nervous. No. I don’t agree. Anyone has the constitutionally given right to free speech. Let me give you an example.

In my church we routinely fight against the oppressive purple people of the world. They keep us down, take our jobs and try to kill us with a disease they created for the sole purpose of keeping our numbers down. The purple people are to be damed to hell.

Now if I were running for president of the United States I might expect to see my comments brought up by my purple-people-loving opponents. Especially if my church were to sell the DVDs of the sermons on the internet.

Americans do enjoy the right of free speech. Damn America all to hell if you want. The problem comes when you have a thin resume of actual works to consider. People then tend to rely on your references as well as your resume. Those associations are called into question. Free speech may be your right but I have a right to consider those words in my choice for elected officials.

Watching the news these days is equivalent to watching movie trailers. You either see something you wish to pursue, or you get enough to know that movie ain’t for you.

I made a judgment on Wright based on the trailer, and after seeing him on Moyers, I found I was wrong.  He is the antithesis of Ronald Reagan, the Clinton’s and the Bushes He is speaking for his people and the conditions they face on the south side.

Which leaves me with another problem, and some guilt.. I wish the folks in the white Ghettos of Worcester, Brockton, and Lawrence Massachusetts, and Lewiston Maine had a similar advocate.

I could not agree more with you on this. My point is that while it may be meaningless to you and I, it’s the kind of crap that routinely loses elections.

Rezko, Wright, Ayers, Michelle… You should hear talk radio hammer this monotonous shit if you haven’t. These associations are unfair and bullshit, but as some idiot said on Fox last night, it’s the death of a thousand cuts. Most are self-inflicted by Obama, like his comments in San Fran.

When Obama doesn’t get the nomination, you can say Wright doomed his candidacy. When he loses to McCain, you can claim Wright ruined his shot at the Presidency. Until either of these happen, it remains to be seen how the candidate with the most states won, popular votes and pledged delegates has been sunk by Wright.

I have to confess that this was the first time I watch Rev. Wright close and I love what I hear and see. Let me explain! What I see is a man that physically resembles very much my late father, Ibrahim (Abraham) who was forced into the diaspora of exile from his homeland Palestine in the early 1940’s, exactly as the upright Abraham was forced out of his homeland in Mesopotamia (Old Iraq) and I guess you will figure out on your own the reasons why.

My father named one of his sons, my only surviving brother, as Ishmael, mainly to celebrate the memory of this great prophet / messenger who became the father of the Arabs and the godfather of all 1.4 billion Muslims of the world. Because of this long history, deep rooted in our memories, Arabs and Muslims can’t easily forget the struggles of both Abraham and his son Ishmael in establishing monotheism and truth in that part of the world against the falsehoods of idolatry.

The point here is that Rev. Wright is an upright minor prophet who devoted his life to the cause of justice and truth, following on the footsteps of all the ancient prophets and messengers.

Besides Wright’s courage, knowledge, honesty and deep sense of justice, on which I commented earlier, he seems very relaxed and confident about what he stands for. This is the man I want to see as president.

In my diaspora sojourns, I spent a total of 15 years, at two different stunts, in the Chicago area, and I feel now that I missed a great opportunity to visit Wright’s church and listen to his sermons. Though I was born a Muslim, I would have had no problem being in his church and listening to his wisdom and truths.

Now that he has retired, I feel that I lost a great opportunity and honor. Rev. Wright is one of very few select bunch who are my heroes outside my religion and ethnicity.

I love you dearly Rev. J. Wright and I can’t thank you enough for your struggle in the cause of justice and truth, no matter what the rabid barking dogs have done to discredit you!

I don’t want a candidate who has all of his detailed information on a website instead of in his memory ready to be used when needed. That’s one of the reasons Obama is a poor debater. He can’t recall his own policy positions on the fly.

Who was it who recently screamed on TV that he wanted a candidate who blew him away intellectually. Was it Stewert or Colbert?  Anyway the point was he wanted someone who was scary-smart.

3. Gee. I’m commenting on a story titled, “Rev. Wright Speaks”. You’re accusing me of bringing it up? Who’s the tool?
4. One speech? An issue? Holy shit are you kidding me? George HW Bush barfed on the Japanese when giving a speech. Do you remember the words or the vomit?
5. Thanks. I think.
6. You’re in denial. Rev. Wright has almost single handedly taken the bloom off your rose. The press no longer openly cheers for Obama anymore. The Wright issue was supposed to come up in the brief time between the convention and the general when Obama could give a speech and distract voters long enough to win. Watch this open sore fester in the heat of newscycle after newscycle. Watch the flesh rotting off the bone when talk radio gets all the Moyer’s soundbites and the rest of the Wright Publicity Tour. did you hear Obama today? He sounds like a 3rd grader trying to explain why he didn’t do his homework. Obama sucks on defense, in case you hadn’t noticed. He’s going to be playing D the rest of the way to November. He already looks exhausted and a little pissy. If you can’t see the Wright anchor around his neck then you aren’t looking.
7. You mistake my pointing out his weaknesses with being against the man. I agree with almost everything I’ve ever heard Obmama (and Wright for that matter) say. I respect his goals and his spirit. I just cannot see him winning. He’s too weak and inexperienced.

Aegrus is correct on this. Those of the elite who benefit from all this. always rely on some jingoistic pseudo nationalistic, emotional gut bucket, to distract everyone from who is being robbed by whom. United States parents see their children destroyed by this insane war, only to be thanked by the government for making the ultimate sacrifice.
And the politicians have the gall to call this slaughter “heroic”. There is nothing good about it.

Because of Jim Crow language? Are you saying Obama hates black people? Well, if your values are political issues, I’d suggest a little soul-searching. More to the point though, I don’t marginalize Bill Clinton, but I am not enamored with his years in office like some are. It is impossible to get a perfect candidate. I think Obama has been semi-clear with most of his policy ideas, and has a large amount of information available on his website to elucidate them further.

Concede that Obama hasn’t necessarily gone way into detail about his policy ideas, sure. I haven’t heard the opposite from Clinton, though. She discusses her experience, which I feel is skeptical, her health care plan and some meaningless rhetoric against the free-trade agreements she’s fought for during the last twenty years. It all reeks of inauthenticity.

Obama has warts like every other candidate, but at least I haven’t seen him make absolutely hypocritical statements to my face the way Hillary has. Both are good candidates, but I think an Obama presidency has opportunity for better than good. Maybe a stone’s throw away from really good.

The energy plan is of concern, that I’ll submit.

How are my values different? Well I’d say that I agree with Obama and Clinton on more issues than I disagree on. I prefer Clinton in this race because I want to win. I believe this race is too important to the country to see this fantastic opportuinty to win back the white house wasted on a one-third of one-term freshman senator who voted for Dick Chaney’s energy plan. I want real solutions to real problems that we face as a nation. All I get from the Obama side is retorical answers about hope and change. These are not policies nor positions, they are filler to divert attention away from a total and complete lack of experience. If not for Hope and Change and the ‘historic’ nature of his campaign would anyone take an Illinois state senator seriously? Methinks not.

I also take huge offense at the systematic demonization of a great leader and elder statesman of our party. The obvious Obama strategy was to marginalize the former president to win an election. Who’s taking the low road to victory?

These are the lyrics to “This is Our Country” written by Obama’s newest and bestest friend, John Mellencamp.

Well I can stand beside
Ideals I think are right
And I can stand beside
The idea to stand and fight
I do believe
There’s a dream for everyone
This is our country

There’s room enough here
For science to live
And there’s room enough here
For religion to forgive
And try to understand
All the people of this land
This is our country

From the east coast
To the west coast
Down the Dixie Highway
Back home
This is our country

That poverty could be
Just another ugly thing
And bigotry would be
Seen only as obscene
And the ones that run this land
Help the poor and common man
This is our country

From the east coast
To the west coast
Down the Dixie Highway
Back home
This is our country

The dream is still alive
Some day it will come true
And this country it belongs
To folks like me and you
So let the voice of freedom
Sing out through this land
This is our country

From the east coast
To the west coast
Down the Dixie Highway
Back home
This is our country

From the east coast
To the west coast
Down the Dixie Highway
Back home
This is our country

You Obamabots want it both ways, don’t you? Wave the flag and show Obama at a gas station shedding croc tears for the common man. Then in private let your true feelings out about the little guy.

“It is really hard for flag waving red-necks to accept that their country is very dirty, wears lots of blood on their hands, and refuse to accept responsibility for all their wrongdoing.”

It is really hard for flag-waving red-necks to accept that their country might be led by someone who doesn’t share our values.

It doesn’t matter that our country does things we only think other countries do. When it comes to casting a vote for President, most people are going to reject your liberal elitist mindset.

The question I asked is how you can spin “God Damn America” out of context?

Obama keeps distancing himself for political reasons and Wright agrees with his decision to give political speeches on race and keep his true feelings to himself.

joe, you can take it out of context because it was in relation to our government’s violent sins, which are true. Furthermore, Wright isn’t running for president. If you aren’t going to beat on Hagee or ‘The Family,’ then you’re just making spin against Obama, which you are.

The mindset you have is wrong because you have let yourself be influenced by fragmented sentences distorted to portray ideas in a different context. No one is defending or saying there is anything positive gained by the particular words in question. However, it’s not as bad as saying homosexuals should die, which I think is an anti-American sentiment. Of course, the same people who bash Wright probably think Hagee is accurate in saying homosexuals aren’t American, and deserve to die for their sins.

It’s the main problem with having discussions with people like you, who have been inculcated with ideology. Homosexuals are bad, poor people are worthless, minorities have no excuses and are dangerous, people who are substance abusers are enemies to America, tax cuts help everyone and America is always right. Period. I’m sure I missed a couple things, but all these divisive non-issues (which only serve to make you feel righteous and feed your ego) don’t go to the root of real problems and offer no solutions for real issues.

What about environmental destruction perpetuated by multi-national corporations? What about the WTO practically enslaving people in third-world countries to give us cash crops and force them to import our food? What about the rising inflation and diminished worth of the American dollar? What about our falling education system and the price of college? How do these things address our global military interventions and war profiteering? Do these issues solve our energy crisis and the cost of living? Do these issues save sick people who can’t afford health care?

No, the big answer for all those things is “free-market.” Which is just another way of say, “I don’t care, I got mine.” We’re all in the same boat, and your decision to close yourself to reality, and focus on non-issues like Reverend Wright is only serving to destroy America and to financially enslave our people.

Good job.

I continue to ask how exactly Rev. Wright’s words are taken out of context and how that his larger message is any better than the bites fed to us on the MSM.

How can you take a comment like, “God Damn America” out of context? How can you spin that comment into something positive with a straight face? These aren’t the worst moments of a 30 year career on the pulpit, these are the man’s beliefs. That’s a reality, a truth, not spin. Further, why would it be wrong for reasonable people to take offense at the acusation that the AIDs virus was man-man for the purpose of genocide? Is there any evidence of this? Can you show me the facts? Can you tell me the truth? Can you back that up somehow with real evidence and not innuendo and supposition? Most people believe that this is crazy-talk, but if you can prove otherwise then please do.

Is there not a common belief in the black churches that the 9/11 chickens came home to roost? I’m not an attendee, so I have no idea except from listening to people who do attend. If the arguement is that a US government capable of the Tuskeegee experiments must, therefor, be capable of creating AIDS. On the face this is not an unreasonable conclusion to jump to, right? When we listen to Rev. Wright, in his own words, in context, we begin to understand what the man believes. Obama may have stepped away from the controversial statements because “he is a politician” but I have no doubt that Wright believes what he preaches. I have no doubt that the Moyer’s interview with Wright will kick over the bee’s nest yet again and force Obama to once again reassure us that he doesn’t stand by his man.

Obama clearly doesnÂ’t cling to his religion when it hurts him politically. ThatÂ’s what he belives, thatÂ’s his truth.
