Colbert and the Anti-Penny CrusaderPosted on Apr 10, 2008
You may not have given the penny much thought, but it turns out that the least of our currency is essentially worthless and wastes Americans a surprising amount of money and time. Anti-penny advocate Jeff Gore would like to do away with the coin altogether—and he has a plan. Watch it: Check out 60 Minutes’ coverage of the issue for some background. i collect coins. i buy silver and gold. my retirement fund increased substantially this year, simply because the worth of my coins went up due to the metal market going up. there aren’t many pennies worth more than face value. as collectibles some will fetch as much as $10,000, a 1955 double die reverse for example. as every day change,i get hundreds a week and i can tell immediately, just by touch, when a penny is pre 1982. last week alone,i got a 1946 s over d in excellent quality, worth at least $25.00. in finest quality this penny would be worth $500. it is a joy to find pre 1982 pennies,in very good condition,it happens all the time. now along comes this fool and many before him who would spoil my fun, by trying to do away with this unique little coin. this particular moron says studies show lost time by store employees counting change. is there a loss while they stand around with their thumb up their ass? how about the person in line that can’t open her purse and find her wallet until the total appears on the register? pennies are a non issue compared to anything else that our government pisses away money on.

I certianly would not take 2 cents for W’s thoughts, nor even give him a ‘penny ’ for his thoughts. An absolute waste of even that currrency.

I visited New Zealand in 2002, they don’t use the penny and do the rounding off thing. Their coins are 5, 10, 20 50 cent coins, then 1,2 and 5 dollar coins. You do end up with a pocket full of coins…
A wise move, so it probably won’t happen.
