‘Back in Black’: Some Votes Are More GlamorousPosted on Apr 9, 2008
“The Daily Show’s” Lewis Black probes the soft underbelly of the celebrity endorsement, from the guy who played Kumar to the “political juggernaut that is Dick Van Patten.” And if you think Oprah is excited about Barack Obama, just wait until you see how she reacts to the cast of “Desperate Housewives.” Watch it here. You Obamanots are so sensitive. I’ve seen Stewart doing a number on Hillary, too. He spares no one. But what makes Obama’s candidacy especially ripe for satire is the messianic fervor of its rank and file. What make his campaign so compelling is also what makes it so easy to poke fun at. The “I’m above it all” and “we represent a new kind of politics” is just soooo irresistible to lampoon when that same campaign indulges in good old-fashioned, slightly dirty politics (holding a counter-rally with a big give-away to suck attention away from your opponent’s rally). Satire is all about irreverence. Neither Clinton nor McCain (nor their partisans) aspire to be holier than thou. Obama, to his credit really, does aspire to be, to represent, something purer and better. That’s great, but you open yourself up as a target for satire. Get used to it. Go along with it. Enjoy it. And you really might become a new kind of politics.

For me the largest irony in Black’s commentary is denigrating celebrity endorsement while, at the same time, participating in the unspoken celebrity endorsement of both he and John Stewart for Clinton.
How they (especially Stewart) do this is by taking every opportunity to denigrate Obama and his supporters (the BiB piece is just an example) while, for example, giving Clinton an interview the night before the Ohio/Texas/etc. votes. Or Stewart’s Barak Hussein Obama joke on the Oscars. Or Stewart starting his new segment last night, “Campaign Dick Moves” award citing that it was a dick move for Obama to raffle Dave Matthews tickets to some college students attending one of his rallies on a college campus. Why was that a “dick move?” Because Obama’s rally was scheduled at the same time as Bill Clinton holding a rally for Hillary on the same campus.
That’s more of a dick move, say, than saying McCain is a better second choice than a fellow Democrat? Over and over and over (until she says she didn’t really say that...)?
Well, don’t worry Lewis or John. Point taken. Some celebrity endorsements really, really don’t mean anything. Except maybe to a majority of the base demographic that has led you through so many years of celebrity.
Just a thought guys.

I heard Gary Coleman is coming out for Nader. Danny Bonaducci for Hillary. Yogi Berra for Obama. And Don Rickles for McCain. So that evens things up a bit.
