Hillary Tries Comedy

Hillary Clinton made a surprise appearance on “Saturday Night Live” over the weekend, where she shared a laugh with her own impersonator. It’s part of a trend that is well captured by a recent Politico article, which notes that politicians are increasingly cultivating their celebrity status.

This was cute. I almost warmed toward Hillary after her appearance on SNL. (Loved the “Why, what’ve you heard?”) Then she followed up Sunday and Monday with more smears and attacks against Obama, finally endorsing McCain as more experienced than Obama (nice, Hillary!)—and I’m back to not being able to stand her. I hope she loses big tomorrow and goes away.

Politicians have to exploit their celebrity status.  That’s the only people Americans find memorable enough to vote for in elections.  Leno’s Jaywalking proves that.  Americans don’t have name recognition of politicians, let alone face.  If they see a politician on SNL or, god forbid, the latest reality show du jour, maybe they’ll know who to vote for in coming elections.

The comedy that is American politics is a very real tragedy for its citizens.

Check the Obama button on Jeff Tweedy’s guitar strap during the Wilco songs on SNL:

Hillary’s clout is amusing to watch. People continue to underestimate her influence.
