The Mukasey DebatePosted on Nov 9, 2007
If you can’t say it any better than Ted Kennedy, why try? We certainly won’t. The votes for Mukasey amounted to Congressional votes for torture.
In addition, Mukasey is a supporter of excessive government secrecy. In the past he has sought subpoenas against defense attorneys in an effort to violate attorney/client confidentiality, sought subpoenas to attain the names of individuals that contribute money to the support to a defendant especially if they are American Muslims— and while he wants to enhanced the power of the state, especially the Bush administration, he is an opponent of the individual privacy of citizens. Attorney General Mukasey, like Gonzo before him, is another disaster for our country.

Louise,
I’m still very bugged by the fact that neither Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama cast a vote on this. Still don’t know if they were ‘no shows’ (and why), or if they just chose not to vote. Either way, it bugs me. This was very important, and it would appear like they may have been avoiding taking a position.
Know what I mean? The standard ‘political games’?

“They seem to be all advocates of torture.
We do not need them in our government.”
Thanks for that info boggs.
Repost every once in a while.
It’s good to know who works against the best interests of the country.
In addition to most repubs, of course.

Re: Mukasey
Senator Kennedy:
I join you in standing against torture and against the administration’s sadistic behavior. Torture is a violation of acclaimed American values. It violates domestic and international law. Torture violates the military code of conduct and its use in Bush’s Inquisition is beyond reason and without justification. Government sponsored torture is anti-moral and inhumane. Bush & companies -the loonies enthroned—advocate torture while denying guilt and they proclaim legal exceptionalism by denying that torture is torture: their conduct is an abomination before their mythical God and is a crime before our foundational Constitution of the United States, as the Bush administration’s policy of torture destroys humanity and destroys the human spirit while simultaneously destroying a (once promising) reputation of the USA in the eyes of and in judgment made by the people of the world. Bush and his Sadistic Torture Regime are a bunch of sickos !

These guys all sound wonderful (except Lieberman), but why didn’t they filibuster? Why do the Dems need 60 votes to pass anything that limits what Bush wants to do, but Bush only needs 50 votes to get what he wants? There is only one conclusion here, and that is that the Democrats are not as uncomfortable with torture as they preach.
Report thisThere is only one way to stop the Democrats’ deceit, and that is to vote Green. The Democrats must be told once and for all that they cannot take their progressive base for granted.

Jbart,
I love your story. I love that you were politicking at such a young age, and Im jealous that I didnt get to shake Bobbys hand myself. And, since Im only a year (maybe less) younger than you, I remember all of this same stuff. Maybe thats what seems to make these times even harder on us, than on some of the kids. I dont know.
Youre right about the UNITING though, and I honestly believe that its getting a tad bit better. One of the biggest problems Ive found, is that its been almost a one-at-a-time sort of a conversion process. Because, even though you were from what was basically an A-political family, (though maybe it was more that your parents just didnt share their views with the you kids) you still were doing your own politicking so you were like in it. So many folks that I know, (even older than I) have managed to go through there entire lives, with next to know interest or awareness in the political process, or how they are even affected by it.
Matter of fact, Ive spent the last two days basically counseling a very dear friend, after sending her the piece by Col. Antoon, on this cancer of the radical evangelicals. In short, she admitted that she rarely reads the links I send her from TD, but had decided to read that one. Well, shes just this really nice, (but naïve) lady who is very wedded to her Christianity, and had NO IDEA that such things could be happening, (and in the military, where one of her sons attended West Point, as well as a neice who was killed in Iraq 2 years ago just out of West Point herself). So, she was devastated, and didnt want to believe it. Shes been somehow led to believe that Cindy Sheehan was spreading hate when she did her mission down in Texas, because of course thats a big Christian Military community, and thats what these people are, and of course they believed all of the initial lies, etc, etc.
So, it has taken this long, and this many tragedies, to finally get the connection through, on the political nature of all of this. And thats why I say its been a one at a time sort of thing, to even get people AWARE, because the lies and propaganda have now been perpetrated for so long. But, I do get your point about uniting. And, THEYVE certainly managed to do it, through Bible study, and these mega churches, and all the rest to spread the lies, and control the nature of the discourse. So, we should be able to do the same. Because, this one at a time thing just isnt cuttin it.
Meantime, I sure did enjoy these videos. I didnt bother to listen to Lieberman, because I already knew what he was gonna say, (the dirty bastard..I remember what happened with Lamont when he won) and I didnt want to ruin my temporary euphoria after watching and hearing the first 3 of these esteemed gentleman. I love em. Watching Bernie made me think I should move to Vermont, just so he could be my Senator. (though I do like ONE of my own here in California).
And now here we are with 58,000 gallons of oil dumped in our SF Bay. I think they did it on purpose. And who is allegedly there to respond to this latest disaster? Well, private contractors of course. Blackwater maybe? Wheres our Coast Guard? Probably in the Persian Gulf or Guantanamo Bay. The dirty bastards. (I like saying that)

Report thisB Sharp, thanks for this. I was just about to go looking, to see what Obama and Clinton had done on this vote. Somehow, I had a feeling they might not show up. (or were they there, and just didnt vote?) More strikes against them. Everytime they have a chance to save themselves, (at least in my eyes) they dont. Im not surprised about Clinton, but I had this fear from the beginning, that Barack could become corrupted by these nasty politics. And, looks like thats what happened. Shouldve been willing to take these risks. He better sign on to the impeachment resolution, if he wants any chance to be VP to Kucinich.

As a preface to my political leanings I offer a little background. I am a middle member of a 6 child household, father a milkman and mother a domestic mother, and the household was absolutely non-political. It was never discussed and I had no idea of the political leanings of either of my parents, as they refused to share them with us kids.
Report thisI remember talking to my fellow classmates at the bus stop that JFK needs to be elected to save our country. Strange, huh? Well I also remember being at a campaign stop when RFK was running, two towns away from mine, on L.I., N.Y., and got there on my bicycle. As the flatbed sped away, I chased it, on foot, and shook hands with Robert and he shook it back with a big smile. His assasination hit me much harder than his brother’s did. I started screaming at my mother, I remember the day very clearly, that “THEY” killed him.
Not Sirhan Sirhan. Them. I have always believed that Ted would be a good President for our country. But, “Chappaquitick”, and the nastiness it could cause couldn’t ever let that happen. He continues to “carry the torch”, per se. I hear Leahy, over and over again, speak to the fight. I hear others, like Bernie Sanders, also speaking to the right. But, it’s the pieces of crap like Joe Lieberman that continues to rankle me. As a resident of CT., since 1993, I’ve listened to this crooked piece of B.S., spread his story of caring for the people. His last opponent,Ned Lamont, was absolutely AGAINST this horrific war. Ned won. Joe ran as an independant, used his corporate ties, and won re-election.
We, as true citizens of America, need to, somehow, unite. If we find a way to do this, we can “terminate” the employment of those representatives that really don’t represent us. But, somehow, we need to find a way to do that. We need to UNITE. Town meetings, coffee shops, civic gatherings ?? I find the majority of people I speak to agree that change is neccessary. It’s how to unite in our goals of change that still seems unlikely.
BTW, I was born in 1952. I was 7 politicking at the bus stop and 14 when I shook RFK’s hand and received that smile, which I remember as it was only yesterday, folks. As always…just my opinion.

What I’d like to know is why Senators Clinton and Obama (and a few others) did NOT vote on Mr. Mukasey, and why Senator Feinstein (along with six other Democratic Senators) did. I think the issue (as Sen Leahy says) is not just waterboarding, but the continued operating principle the president seems to be using- that he and those who agree with him can ignore our laws, and the job of the AG to uphold US law.
