Colbert’s Campaign Hits a SnagPosted on Nov 2, 2007
All those hand-wringers out there who’ve been vexed and perplexed by Stephen Colbert’s presidential campaign might be heartened to hear that the South Carolina Democratic Party—“a shadowy organization whose rituals are shrouded in mystery,” says Colbert—has thrown a major wrench into the works. I think Colbert could easily get the signatures to run as an independent in S.C. and he should consider doing so.

Following up on my “Who is Stephen Colbert?” analysis, I suppose this all comes down to the question of WHICH Stephen Colbert wants to be a candidate:

The character that Colbert-the-actor portrays (who also happens to be named “Stephen Colbert”) is basically a REDUCTIO AD ABSURDUM (very ABSURDUM, I might add) of Republican punditry. By all rights that CHARACTER should be running in the Republican primary. On the other hand the Colbert who INVENTED that candidate probably did so out of Democratic sentiments. Personally, I would prefer to see the fictitious character run in the Republican race, since John Edwards needs all the help he can get!

RE: A Texan
Obviously you don’t get it. He’s attempting to provide us with the “absurdity” that has become our democratic process. Pat Paulson did the same thing way back then, when the “flaws” in the process reared its ugly head. But it is a far worse scenario today and, in my opinion, an important part of “exposing it for what it is and (hopefully)helping in the effort(s) to affect change.
