Bill Maher on the Politics of FearPosted on Oct 28, 2007
The “Real Time” host makes the case for prioritizing our fear: “What’s really scary this Halloween is that the same group of idea-free losers who won the last presidential election could win the next one by making us afraid of the wrong things, which is why this Halloween, I’m going as something truly horrifying: a melting polar ice cap.” Watch it: (via The Largest Minority, where you can watch the full episode) Advertisement Previous item: Mosaic on America's Sanctions Against Iran Next item: Chomsky Disputes 9/11 Conspiracy Theories Elsewhere: . They hate us for our feardom.
Well, you can hardly blame politicians for resorting to the tried and true. Scaring up enemies from without is a classic manoeuvre. It allows for military buildup and it’s subsequent official looting of the treasury by those in power and their cronies. And, just as important, it distracts the populace from domestic issues that are more difficult to address.
The media, however, are a completely different story. Their agenda is to create drama, because that improves ratings, and ratings bring more add revenue… They have nothing to gain by treating stories skeptically, and certainly much to lose. This is especially true with issues like global warming, in which the only demonization that can occur is the demonization of ourselves.
What Bill is calling for, is a less gullible America, one capable of self examination and self criticism, and that leaves me pessimistic.

It’s so true. There need to be more messages of courage propagated into the popular and mainstream consciousness of America. Hasn’t anyone noticed that those hugely popular “No Fear” shirts of the 90’s aren’t worn anymore? Anyone notice that movie phrases like, “I ain’t afraid of no ghosts” aren’t on the lips of young people these days? Coincidence? I think not. - TheEnd

Statistically speaking, your odds of being injured or killed via terrorism is slim to none. How many people die each year from smoking? From highways? From FDA-approved medicine?

Bill Maher is easily the most intelligent commentator in the media today. He’s also the most intellectually hilarious. I always look forward to the end of his show. The last rant is always a sure highlight to remember. Rock on, Bill.

I find it hard to believe that Americans are running around like a bunch of sniveling little gits, their tails pulled up underneath them like terrified dogs, living in constant, fear terrified of everything. Maybe living where I do,known as the most violent city in America, this fear seems totally irrational and does not exist, maybe all the hype I keep hearing about is manufactured. You know this administration say keep it simple, repeat like a mantra over and over until people start to believe, then when they start to believe this B.S. you got them hooked.Come on people are you all really scared sh—less? Have all the cowards taken on the moniker of the “W” ? Wussies, like our fearfilled leader-yes he is. Why else did he hide under his daddies presidential campaigning coattails when he was supposed to be serving his country?
Maybe the drug companies can come up with a pill that gives people their courage back,we got pills for those whose cofidence needs enhancing already, time to discover a new drug.
