Mayor Sanders
cbs5.com

Inspired by care for his daughter and an eleventh-hour decision, as he put it, to “lead with my heart,” San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders (a Republican, as a Truthdig reader pointed out) said Wednesday that he would “take a stand on equality and social justice” and come out, as it were, in favor of gay marriage.

Watch the clip of Mayor Sanders’ announcement here.

my lover and i have been together for 30 years. we don’t care about being married,we both think it is a stupid institution, gay or straight. we want the same tax breaks and any other breaks that straight families want and get.

This is an incredible, moving, and compassionate speech.  Imagine how his daughter felt when she heard it.  Imagine how you would feel if this man happened to be your father.

Thank you, Mr. Sanders.

Oh please the guy comes to common sense decision and he gets credit for it.He could not judge the problem on the merits he had to had this conversion because his daughter is gay.How pathetic.I guess I cannot figure out that e bola virus is bad. I am going to have to have a member of my family get it to figure it out.Prejudice and discrimination against anybody in our society is bad and if you cannot figure it out on your own shame on you.Maybe Craig can have a stall conversion.

I am not a Republican or a Democrat, but I am a mother of a lesbian daughter and a straight son.  I listened to Mayor Jerry Sander’s news conference and admired him for his bravery.  I know that he and his wife have had to examine their own prejudices and begin to look at sexual orientation in a new light.  His love for his child has brought his to a new realization.  The realization that his daughter’s sexual orientation is not a choice, nor does it change the fact that Lisa is a wonderful young woman.
It was quite obvious that this was really difficult for Mayor Sanders and that he has done a lot of soul searching.

Dick Chaney are you listening?????

If that wasn’t from the heart I don’t know what is.  This not only shows strength of character but empathy as well. The gay community is not asking for anything “special”, they just want a fair shake. We are not all the same, so what.  What a boring world this would be if we were.

I tend to deal with a lot of people who are “of the unradical conservative/christian bent”.  The thing I’ve noticed is their perception of gays is so totally off base.  They really believe the stereotypical personification of gays.  They think gay people are lying and just want attention.  Somehow they feel that gay people WANT to be ostracized by society, so they can cry about it.  I find it bizarre that they in fact believe this.  I try to walk them through the illogic of their argument.

One thing they always seem to understand though is this:  What if you were REQUIRED to be gay, can you imagine that?  Forced into cohabiting with someone your not attracted to so everyone else is OK with it. Would you do it?........I rest my case.

This comes as a real jolt because not only is Sanders a Republican, he is a developer frontman who is in deep to turn San Diego into a wall-to-wall condo carpet. First, he stole an election on a technicality from a Democratic environmentalist. Then, though the city is bankrupt, he won’t declare insolvency; a pension scam by his predecessor left the City employee pension fund in the red by hundreds of millions and he is doing nothing to fix it, like a typical GOP guy. He allowed developers to build a 180 foot building in the flight path of an airport against FFA regs. Now, Jerry is championing gay rights and making a nationwide name for himself. Don’t be fooled, Sanders is scum and if he didn’t have a gay daughter he would be on the record banning civil unions.

Good for him.  It should be mentioned that he’s a Republican in a Republican town.  Judging from comments at the website of one of the local papers, he’s going to have a fair number of intra-party crazies out to get him.
