Send In the Clergy!Posted on Aug 20, 2007
KSLA News of Shreveport, La., is standing by its report on “Clergy Response Teams,” trained by the federal government to pacify an angry citizenry in the event of martial law. The idea being, as far as we can tell, that religious leaders are ideally suited to the task of explaining to people why they should give up their freedom for the “better good.” Watch it here. By Tom Patterson, August 28, 2007 at 4:11 pm # I see. Well, boggs, all I can say to that is, “Keep seeking what’s true, unless you’re sure you’re already there.”
By Tom Patterson, August 27, 2007 at 6:49 am # Lefty: I should have phrased it: “from the time of” Constantine, as that’s what I meant. Thanks.
By Tom Patterson, August 26, 2007 at 1:33 pm # Purple: Did you read my first post? Your latest sounds as if you didn’t understand what I wrote. Just checking.
By Tom Patterson, August 25, 2007 at 11:50 am # Purplewolf: with all due respect, your post kind of makes you sound like a shrill nut. You’re right that many of us Christians are way off base, and that many damaging things have been done in God’s name. But frankly, your post makes you sound less stable than those about whom you rant.
By Tom Patterson, August 25, 2007 at 9:19 am # Still a little unsure of the veracity of this report, though I am completely certain that many of my fellow Christians would see no problem in being used by the government for the purpose of pacifying a citizenry resistant to the imposition of martial law. It is a source of shame that so many Christians--from Constantine to the present--have understood the church to be a prop for good government, stable society, and available to be used by the government for dishonorable ends by a warped reading of Romans 13. Frankly, we deserve the criticism this article levies.
By tomack, August 22, 2007 at 5:26 am # More important to this post than whether or not clergy would be helpful in a martial law situation, is eddiee7’s response to jane huey. That being, the availability and hopefully the spread of fresh--and accurate--news sources. I believe the importance of this is incalculable to our country’s future. eddiee7 is right on the money, we have to read beyond our intitial reactions to the fronts of the various “new” and “non-traditional” news sources to what lies within. That means left must read right, and right must read left. We all MUST gather as much information as we can in order to make intelligent decisions. It’s too bad “blog news” isn’t allowed on national television, scheduled opposite our Most Excellent programming.
By eddiee7, August 22, 2007 at 2:52 am # In response to Jane Huey’s post, with all due respect to be fair. I am an American and live and work in Europe at the moment so i very much rely daily on various podcasting, truthdig, (Robert Sheer on Left,Right & Center is always a breath of fresh air, Scott Ridder and others are loud voices that we cannot afford to have silenced), Democracy Now, Huffington Post, Bill Moyers Journal, Al Jazeera english, CNN and as many, many other opposing views as i can to maintain perspective and to verify the spin. With regard to Prisonplanet (or other Alex Jones connected sites) being a paranoid conspiracy website i think a closer look will clearly show you otherwise. Respectful i have to believe you may have been put off by the visual and hype and may not have taken time to follow some of the leads there. These things are happening in real time, in front of our noses, but on page 18… and with a strong denial from the administration. A great deal of the information posted there as documents, articles, interviews are linked to their origins, those being AP & others. The documents, quotes, & interviews are taken directly from thier sources, those as well being White House website, Homeland security and others. With regard to “more reliable sources”, i would suggest maybe ignoring your distaste or dislike of Alex Jones’s delivery and take a minute more to follow the sources of whats found there and you’ll find that most of it comes from the same places you consider legitimate. I am not a FOX news supporter at all, but i do look in and fact check to see for myself what they omit or slant for my own peace of mind. Yes they are focused primarily on very controversial or “conspiracy oriented issues much of the time where truthdig & huffington and others have a more diverse palette, and the delivery can sometimes be rather hyper....but the info is solid and confirmable. All these sites, truthdig and others are invaluable tools for information, all provide a platform for bloggers and journalists to help us sort out the overwhelming amount of daily info and spin out there. I thank them all, and i pray the net stays free as it is the final frontier for those who genuinely believe in freedom of the press, seperation of church and state, the consitution, and what america is really all about. Anyone who doubts this freedom is under attack isn’t getting “all the facts”. And the facts are right under our noses if we choose to aknowledge them.
By Margaret Currey, August 21, 2007 at 3:11 pm # All I can say is the old saying still goes, the rich get richer the poor get poorer, only in this day and age, some of the poor can read and read very well, the I word should be on a lot of libs, Lahey will have to use that word more often.
By Jane Huey, August 21, 2007 at 7:41 am # The site you link to for more info is a paranoid conspiracy theory website called prisonplanet. Do you have any other source for information on this program? I don’t doubt that the current government would sponsor such a program, I just need more reliable sources. This is worth following up on.
