MSNBC Anchor Refuses to Cover Paris HiltonPosted on Jul 2, 2007
MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski strenuously objected to covering Paris Hilton’s legal woes as a lead story, so much so that when her producer (and the teleprompter) refused to budge, she first tried to burn, then tore and shredded the copy. Here she explains her revolt: “I just don’t believe in covering that story, especially not as the lead story in a newscast when you have a day like today.”

You rock Mika, and I bet you got fired for your courage. It is all about what Rupert Murdoch wants us to know and what he wants the talking heads to say. If they fire you get in touch with Amy Goodman at Democracy Now. She rocks too.

Kathleen,
Thanks for the reminder. I might have to check in with Amy Goodman for a job myself.
Life is tough these days for female journalists/reporters who don’t tow the Murdoch line.

I agree with several people that Joe and the other guy Mike is on air with were completely condescending in their actions, and I wonder how Mika can work with them day after day. I had never watched MSNBC before, and would go back to watch Mika, but the two men she works with, especially Joe, are irritants and male chauvenists smarty pants.

I remember a time, way back when, when news programs reported the news, instead of creating it. Investigations used to be done by the police department, not the news people. Newspapers and other media outlets are less in the business of news, and more in the business of ratings and advertising revenue.
Kudos to Mika for saying what most of America is thinking: Enough already. Surely there’s something more important than the dimensions of a debutante’s jail cell, or the drug content of a former Playboy Playmate’s bloodstream. Hmm...maybe there’s some GOOD NEWS on TV....maybe?

Thank GOD some anchor person had the guts to say what we all think. Just because some moron paparazzi are running around taking pictures of that idiot, doesn’t mean we are actually interested in her. The next time I ever want to hear about Paris Hilton is that she actually goes to college, gets an education, and does something with herself that does involve sticking her tongue down some guys throat. I will continue to watch MSNBC AS LONG AS THEY CONTINUE TO NOT REPORT ON PARIS

And a Bronx cheer for the stupid, bullying pigs she works with. It’s time for journalists to start acting like journalists instead of circus hucksters. I hope both men get fired. I guess it doesn’t matter that much anyway since the posts show we are in unanimous agreement that we are thoroughly fed up with all this Paris, Brittney, Anna Nicole (even O.J.) crap the MSM errantly keeps subjecting us to. It’s a sad commentary on a large portion of the American public they can be so bamboozled & distracted by MSM owners with agendas contrary to the public interests, especially when they are utilizing OUR airwaves.

Thank you Mika!!! I am sorry I omitted your name in my tirade against the two and I can’t bring myself to call them men that shared the broadcast with you. You need to leave MSNBC and leave these scum behind. I signed off mainstream media some time ago and get my news off the internet. I really don’t know or care who these other clowns were that shared the camera with you, but they are spineless cowards and you deserve better. The other two like I said you can both eat a bullet, but its too cowardly of you even to do that. At least MSBC fire them and let them go defend this war in Iraq by enlisting. Do you think that will happen. NO! They are the same CHICKENHAWKS like DICKLESS OR NEEDLEDICK CHENEY and BOZO THE BUFFOON BUSH who dodged the Vietnam conflict. Its all right to fabricate a war and use other american citizens sons and daughters as fodder for your agenda of filling your pockets with money and leaving a financial legacy (ala O.J. Simpson) but OH NO! I’m not going to war and my children are not going to war. CHENEY AND BUSH are COWARDS,LIARS, AND FRAUDS. I’m not even going to go near Libby. He should be out there pounding rocks right along with 0ther lying creep from the Reagan administration Ollie North for obstruction of justice. Excellent for Mika! She dares to criticize the stupidity of prevailing media coverage of trivial issues rather than news that actually affects the lives of members of the public.
The condescending goons on either side of her exemplify a common attitude probably preferred by a lot of male viewers with respect to women. You see it and hear it throughout the media especially on talk radio and sports talk radio. When the pretty lady got “out of line” and wasn’t doing her job the “guys” tried to “wrangle” her back into place.

Your display of GUTS was outstanding! Thank you for putting it out on MSNBC. If they didn’t like it...t.s. The reality of it is, you’re far and away too good for that excuse of a channel.
Since you obviously care deeply, another broadcast channel might be much more to your liking...such as PBS. And there are other places, as well. I realize that is easy for me to say.
I’m sure you can find a way to better your situation. Wouldn’t it be nice to not have to go into work, and have your intelligence insulted, by having to read garbage? Obviously. Joe Scarborough obviously care less what story he is discussing. Wouldn’t you really like to work around people who really cared about ACTUAL news?

I wonder what is the difference between Paris and Scooter?
I think that since the media is a part of corporate america and this administration wants to keep their thoughts and actions secret, why have news that tells people about the war, after all the neocons say this war has to go on until it is won, just watch how the Karl will spin the get out of jail person dollars to donuts they will bring up Bill, Bill did wrong but did he lie about a war where people get killed.
Really we went to war unprepared with the troops not having all that they need and the Rummy says you go to war with what you have, never mind that these guys go back and go back and go back until they finally come home in a box with a flag, and then the media talk about how they were great Americans, I really believe most would just want to come back and forget the hero stuff.

Thank goodness there are some journalists/news commentators with principles. Its incredibly obvious that the female journalist has more guts/balls than the two pussys setting on each side of her. I praise her and the other two clowns need to be castrated. When your lead story is about a dysfunctional slut, of a priviledged family in this county than your priorities are all wrong. You two clowns on the right and left of your co-newscaster ( I hesitate to call you journalists, I believer voyeur is the appropriate description ) want to lead with Paris Hilton over so many much more important newsworthy items in this world you two assholes need to be on the front line of Irag and I don’t mean in the “Greenzone”. You two gut bastards need a severe asswhipping and humiliation along with castration. Kudos to the female professional who has a concience and shows some character. You two assholes have a lot to learn about being men of character. I would be willing to bet you both voted for the present administration twice. I will say this again as I have said before, “ If you voted for Bush/Cheney once you should be embarrassed if you voted for them twice you should be ashamed. If you think this war is so worthy. Get off your fat hypocritical asses and volunteer to go to the front of the line in Irag. You are gutless ... we know you are cowards harassing a peer for showing some character. This was certainly rehearsed. What may be happening here is, now that it looks like there will be a Democratic president after the ‘08 elections, they want their viewers to take them more seriously.
While Republicans are in office, they feed their viewers that Hilton shit to destract them from the real calamities that should be covered in the news.
Now that it looks like the Democrats will be the ones creating the catastrophies, they have to make sure the viewers know all about it.
It’s easy to decipher. It’s like Murdoch donating money to the Clinton campaign.

Watching this has reminded me as to why America is in the position that it is. There are people who really care about whats important. They want to focus on these things, come to a solution and then move on. However those who own/run the media hire like minded people who think with their dicks and talk out their asses. It was quite apparent that the two frat boy ‘reporters’ were just trying to piss her off and get a reaction. They looked like fools as they tried to instigate emotional reactions from Mika and all they got for it was a determined reporter holding her ground and the chance to display their unprofessional ignorance to the world.
In the Seventies a Journalist was leaving the show and was giving his farewell speech. He warned the audience of the fact that Journalism was going a dangerous route...that it is becoming filled with popularity seekers and losing its actual reporters. He said that News should be delivered to the people by reporters, be factual and be on time...Not be delivered to you by a person who is in a living room setting talking to you like an old friend...while giving you their opinion.

It’s really about time someone did this. Granted, in general television news is more “fluffy” than print news (especially American television news), but it must be really bad for a journalist to have to make such a statement.
It’s sad that so many people are attracted to celebrity gossip. Of course it’s not just an American thing; I’d say from looking at newsstands in London it’s worse there, and it’s definitely present in European society. Are celebrities really more special than the rest of us, do they really deserve that much attention? Granted, a man or woman who wins the Nobel Prize for physics or literature should definitely be written about, as they made an actual contribution to society. But vapid socialites that are famous for being famous and actually lower the value of society through their very existence (for example, by bumping actual news stories)? They’re actually destructive to society - and people continue to worship them. What does that say about us?

My respect for MSNBC’s Mika Brzezinski just went way, way up after watching that clip. It was difficult enough for her that she chose to stand against the mindless obsession with celebrity today, to the detriment of real news affecting a lot more people. The two news clowns beside her and the producer, Larry, Moe and Curly, just don’t seem to get it. We’re in the middle of a culture war with an enemy that finds it easy to strap explosives onto a six year old child’s body; we’re in a massive climate experiment that threatens to affect hundreds of millions of lives. What does it take to convince a media person that Paris Hilton or the absence of Britney Spears’s underwear, just isn’t that important? Ms. Brzezinski, you have my profound respect and admiration.

While she was being released from jail last week, my brother and sister-in-law where planning their 24 year old daughter’s funeral. She had been fighting cancer for 2 1/2 years, so when I say we really didn’t give a rat’s a** that she got out of jail or not is an understatement.
