The Onion pokes fun at the sometimes ridiculous abortion debate by floating an absurd proposal: fetal consent.

I don’t hold this movie against the pro-choice stance, I enjoy satire but think the Onion is rubbish. If I wasn’t so opposed to forcing my views on other people I would want to rip all of the papers out of the newly installed ONION news stands at my university. I try to be mature and tolerate viewpoints that I think are wasteful of the paper they’re written on. But when it comes to issues of human life, of war and peace, I am unwilling to pass by without defending what the world has discovered over centuries of destruction, war, and atrocity committed against one another, always with some well articulated, if incoherent, argument. A more thoughtful pro-choice argument is just as ridiculous to me as a poorly produced Onion film.

The problem behind WAR and POVERTY, both great evils, are a lack of respect for the weakest human life, and a lack of motivation for creative solutions to conflicts of interest. So are artificial population control, abortion, and euthanasia. Mother Theresa, in receiving her 1979 Nobel Peace Prize, said, Abortion is the greatest destroyer of peace in the world. It is cleare: What kept HER going was love. (Yesterday I was at a fancy party for a tiny segment of my dad’s big oil company and there was enough food to feed a small African nation. Don’t tell me we dont have the resources on this earth.)

And one sensitive point, purplewolf: Yes I am a man, and finally part of a generation of men that may learn to counteract the reality that a majority of abortions are performed because the father is not present for the mother. AND, If you have to be a woman to have a right perspective on abortion, don’t you also have to be a fetus? The thing is, we all HAVE BEEN fetuses. We all have been vulnerable. So lets get rid of our utilitarian, arrogant notions of building a perfect world by, like the Nazis, branding a certain group to be “parasites.” If one has to be a black to be pro-civil rights, I am not pro-civil rights. If one has to be a refugee, a slave, a woman discriminated against and harassed, to have a say in those matters, I could not call myself a defender of human dignity. But I am, and I will remain so, defending your dignity as passionately as the lives of your children and the unborn children of the starving kids in Africa. Because NO ONE is ‘not worth it’. Where is the generosity and love that can stop wars? I will not accept a world built on cynicism.

Commonsense, You state that there are 50 million abortions are done each year, is this just in America? If so, that is about the same number of the medically uninsured people in this country. You claim all 50 million pregnancies cannot be the result of rape. Any act of sex, whether rape or consentual sex has a 50/50 change of resulting in pregnancy. Medical fact. You have a 1 in 2 chance of getting pregnant every time you have sex. And women can be forced to become a parent against their will, thanks to the narrow minded busybodies, even if they are NOT raped, because of other people forcing their beliefs and views onto total strangers who they know nothing about, and harrassing the political rulers to make laws to deny others their right to govern their own bodies.

Andrew, people who starve to death due to lack of enough food often starve to death because there are too many people and not enough food to feed everyone. In war people are killed or are scarred in one way or another, many come back with missing body parts. Also this is one of the ways in which goverments keep the population down a little bit. Where’s the pro-life in that? These two examples that are taken from your comment on May 30 show you do not understand medical science. These two situation have actual existing people and not a parasitic fetus (that is what it is until birth-a parasite in a host body) with the potential to become a person once it has been born. I may have a weird sense of humor but if you worked in the type of work I did you might also view the world as I do. My working career was in the medical field taking care of people who are excess people (meaning their own families don’t want to bother with them) and a lot of studies in science and theology (study of the bible-christian) I spent about 40 years taking care of people from birth to death, the mentally and physically handicapped, veterans who come back from some war with an incomplete body thanks to some bomb that blew up to close to them. If I didn’t have some form of release to keep from going insane, I never would have lasted in the type of work I did. I also worked in law enforcement as a prison guard and have seen the results of what unwanted babies often become. It’s not a pretty sight. Also a fetus cannot feel pain that you think it might go thru at the earliest stages as the nerve endings are not completly developed until the very last few weeks of pregnancy and in some cases if a baby is a few weeks early these nerve endings will finish developing after birth You miss the point. Pain is a mute point. And how many children have you given birth to yourself Andrew? I have had two. When does this goverment allow you to writeyour fetus off on your taxes as a dependant, when it is concieved or after it is born?

“We like: Well produced films, Getting rid of the unwanted, Lumping people into a category and labelling them socially backward and unworthy of breeding…”

Sound sort of Nazi to anyone else?!

I have no objections to humor. I just don’t see how this movie is any funnier than a well-produced satire of people dying of hunger or war. There is suffering and pain involved in the abortion decision, legal or illegal, something politicians on all sides acknowledge, and to satirize this issue is an extremely difficult thing to do without taking an extreme position on it or being just plain weird.

Sure, some people simply find it ridiculous to think of a fetus as a person. The rest of us find these people ridiculous. =)

I think your video/news article was a riot. Unfortunately some misguided pro-lifers out there might try to do this, which shows how far out of touch with reality they really are. Not every child concieved is a wanted child. Forcing a woman to carry it to term only makes this child a resentment. As for the excuse commonly heard that it could always be put up for adoption- why should a person have to go thru the expense, physical changes, possible job loss, and the pain of childbirth only to give it away for nothing. There are adoptable children now that are unwanted and still waiting, how does adding more unwanted children to this group help. Don’t be surprised if some right winger christian conservative tries to make this a law. As absurd as it sounds, I am certain they will try. Even though “the fetus” is not capable of signing a consent form. Loved the comment about making a woman wait for nine months to have an abortion also. And for the person who “didn’t get it”. Let’s hope that one doesn’t breed. There are enough “dee-dee-dees” out there now.

this is brilliant - and so well produced. and throughly lampoons the simple-minded idiots who are “pro-life” . alas, the dupes who are on the “pro-life” side don’t get the joke, as they are not only misguided but humorless, a double whammy. keep up the good work, Onion.

I really dont get it. As usual the Onion has to resort to weirdness to wade into controversy, and make absolutely no sense in the process. If nothing else though, this video might shed light on how proposterous and bizarre the idea of an unborn’s child parents killing their child really is. Especially poignant in the clip: “Any child who refuses to sign will grow up knowing they never were wanted.” One day we’ll look back on this era with shame.

Like ham & eggs, abortion is an inconvenience for the mother (hen) but a life ending experience for the fetus (pig).  I think written or verbal consent would be something to consider; how often do you think the response would be positive?  Really, to consider a fetus not a baby until it passes the birth canal is like saying a pea isn’t a pea until it is out of the pod!

You see, I do agree that it is a basic right to have
sovereignty over your very being,

And for a woman to become a parent against her will only occurs when rape creates a pregnancy, which doesn’t happen very often.  Certainly not 50,000,000 times a year!

I can only hope Karl Rove doesn’t see it. That would definitely get the Evangelicals revved up. What a talking point for Bilbo O’UnReality to beat into the ground until the 08 election.

Hilarious.
What seems to be left out of the abortion debate is the basic human right to have sovereignty over your very being.  If that’s not sacred, what is?  (Also, there’s the issue of becoming a parent against one’s will)
