Fox’s Gibson Joins the Michael Moore Witch Hunt

Michael Moore

John Gibson of Fox News attempts to “nail” Michael Moore for his recent trip to Cuba, arguing rather desperately that Moore cannot be considered a journalist because his last movie grossed $100 million and journalists are supposed to be underpaid.

Is it at all surprising that a Fox News host’s litmus test for journalistic integrity would focus on money, and not whether one reports the facts?

Heeeey Skruff—you’re a Lehrer fan! I had a 7th-grade social studies teacher (way back in 1971) who played Lehrer’s “Pollution” song in class for us when we were learning about ecology. That’s one of the things that started radicalising me politically. I was able to find “An Evening Wasted With...” and one of his other albums on vinyl, and also have them on CD. They were some of the recordings when I (with great sadness) reduced my music collection from about 3,000 records and discs down to fewer than 1,000 when we shifted hemispheres.

Nowadays the world looks like it’s becoming the one in Lehrer’s “Who’s Next” tune. And U.S. policy is now turning into what Randy Newman sang about in “Political Science,” if you know that one.

Gather round while I sing you of Wernher von Braun
A man whose allegiance is ruled by expedience
Call him a Nazi, he won’t even frown
“Ha, Nazi schmazi,” says Wernher von Braun

Don’t say that he’s hypocritical
Say rather that he’s apolitical
“Once the rockets are up, who cares where they come down
That’s not my department,” says Wernher von Braun

Some have harsh words for this man of renown
But some think our attitude should be one of gratitude
Like the widows and cripples in old London town
Who owe their large pensions to Wernher von Braun

You too may be a big hero
Once you’ve learned to count backwards to zero
“In German oder English I know how to count down
Und I’m learning Chinese,” says Wernher von Braun

Ernest, as I’ve said, Murdoch is an American citizen now. He changed countries because there’s a lot more money to be made in the U.S. (population 300 million) than Australia (22 million.) And you have to be an American citizen to own a TV network in the U.S.

Crime Minister Howard’s Liberal Party changed the media ownership laws here this year allowing foreign citizens to own Aussie broadcast stations. Murdoch already owns many newspapers here, but he had to divest his TV empire. He might use the change to re-enter Oz, although it would be a trivial money-spinner for him.

What you should be worried about is Murdoch’s media interests in China (population four times as large as the U.S.) THAT’S where he (and his latest wife, who’s Chinese) might see the biggest opportunity to make money. So will Murdoch operate in ways that help China?

If I was a paranoid conspiracy theorist, I’d say that using the Fux News Channel to put the WORST! PRESIDENT! EVER! in power so he could destroy America, paving the way for the Chinese to dominate the 21st Century, would fit right in with that. But I’m not a paranoid conspiracy theorist…

And it always surprises me how well Australians know Michael Moore’s work. Much better than Americans do! I even have friends here who remember Moore’s show on Fox television. How many of you watched “TV Nation” during the late 80s? Boggles the mind, doesn’t it—Moore on Fox…

Probably, many Americans purchase their Cuban cigars from outlets close to the border, such as Toronto, Canada. It is a well known fact that during the Toronto International Film Festival, every September, the scores of invited Hollywood personalities buy large amounts of Cuban cigars, not only for themselves, but their associates back in LA.
As they use their own private jets, no doubt US Customs are circumvented.

In a news item on Saturday, Michael Moore has sent a full copy of SICKO for safe keeping in Toronto - less the US Govt. seize it.

So he made some serious $ on his movie.  Hmmmm. How’d that happen? Maybe the people were willing to pay for what he offerred to them. Isn’t that the basis for capitalism? Isn’t that a decision that a “free” society gets to make? Our laws re:foriegn ownership of companies that produce products that are sensitive to our country’s security are being trampled on. Brittish Aerospace (BAE) owning United Defense, which makes our Bradley Armoured Vehicles (as well as many other “sensitive” military products) is not very different than Rupert Murdock “owning” one of the major news organizations(FOX)and the New York Post. IT’S AGAINST THE LAW and we should start looking at the reasons it IS OUR LAW. Once we do, we should FORCE foriegn interests to sell. We need to take back our country, no matter what $ they’re willing to pay. Once again, the “whore-ish” nature of $ has corrupted our laws and damaged us all.

“Counter-terrorism agency investigating Michael Moore
puts more staff on Cuban travel restrictions
than tracking Iraqi terrorists”
-- TIME Magazine

“Michael Moore will never get a standing ovation from the Bush Administration, but he certainly won’t complain about the free publicity he’s getting for his newest documentary, SiCKO. Free publicity for an adversary may not have been the government’s intention, but that has certainly been the effect of the investigation Washington has launched against Moore just one week before the movie’s slated premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.”

http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/mikeinthenews/index. php?id=9790

“Still, the travel ban is backed by considerable government resources: OFAC, whose primary mission is counter terrorism, designates 15% of its staff to enforcing Cuba travel restrictions — more employees than those tracking Iraqi terrorists or those assigned to locate the missing assets of Saddam Hussein.”

Not sure where to post this—here?
Or on THEY LOVE US FOR OUR HYPOCRISY

John Gibson’s just smarting, cause government shills never give him free publicity!

Besides, making a documentary is time consuming hard work. Research and interviews. Scripting and filming and editing. You cant be lazy if you want to make a documentary.

Which is probably why we’ll never see Gibson and associates do one.

People who are able to analyze what they read, see and hear already know that the FOX news organization produces mostly “yellow journalism” which, by definition, cannot be relied on for facts.

The biggest red flag should be their cute little signature - “news that’s “FAIR & BALANCED"." Anyone or any organization that has to tell you they are FAIR & BALANCED, most likely are not EITHER.

I’m reasonably sure I wouldn’t trust Michael Moore to be always fair and balanced either - but I appaud his guts and talent to find and present “the rest of the story.” It’s the only way we, the people, get anywhere near the real truth - which likely lies somewhere between what FOX reports and what Michael Moore reports.

Damn I’m sick of LIARS, especially ones that are paid from my pocket and who take me for a fool.

What should really come out of all this is an effort to pass legislation that would overrule all executive orders banning trade with Cuba--a policy intended solely to advance the interests of the corporatocracy in its persistent quest to extend imperial domination throughoout this hemisphere.

While I agree with Thomas Billis that “FOX news hates...democracy,” I believe that statement can be applied to the entirety of the Bush regime, the hard right and the military-industrial complex.

What really bothers the Fox Propaganda Network is that Moore’s trip will reveal that the socialized healthcare system in impoverished Cuba is superior to the health scam system in the U.S. where insurance company and pharmaceutical CEOs grow inordinately rich as 47 million Americans lack even the most basic coverage and where those fortunate enough to have insurance find that far too often they are not “covered” as their carriers find one excuse after another to deny authorization for necessary medical procedures.

What really concerns the hard-right is that Moore’s trip might lead Americans to take a hard look at the Conyers-Kucinich single-payer proposal that would eliminate “for-profit” healthcare insurers--an unnecessary middle-man that already captures 31% of the healthcare costs in this nation.  And, perhaps of greater concern to the corporatocracy and Fox News, is that if Americans carefully examine Conyers-Kucinich, they will put two-and-two together and start carefully scrutinizing the difference between Dennis Kucinich and those corporatist charletons (Clinton/Obama/Edwards) who have been masquerading as Democrats.  The next thing you know, the American working and middle classes might actually select a candidate who actually represents their interests.  What the Hell would that do to the corporate bottom line?

If we live in a country with such vast freedoms, how can our government regulate where we, as individual citizens, travel?  In the judge’s explanation, what really jumped out at me was the statement re: why there is a trade embargo on?, with? (what’s the correct word here) Cuba.  Our government doesn’t want “federal dollars invested in Cuba”.  Does that mean individual personal wealth actually belongs to the government?  I realize that at tax time it may seem like that, but do they get to determine how our after-tax dollars are spent as well?

On the upside, the word from the attorney seemed to be that the worst case scenario isn’t that bad. In the broader perspective, it’s probably good publicity for the film.

If this isn’t a ruse by the repubs to try to silence Michael Moore then the repubs should also investigate the ten 911 heroes who went with him and also press charges against them. Let’s be fair repubbies, and not just single out Moore but hold all accountable. The ten heroes are not journalists and all did gain from this trip so they more, than Moore, should be investigated. I bet the American public would just love to see our heroe’s fined for trying to get medical help they could not afford here in the good ole USA. Not one mention of charging any of the ten heroes with a crime in Gibson’s fair and balanced Faux News report. WHAT HYPOCRISY!
