Baghdad

These are stories from Iraq, told by people who live there. It’s easy to forget that amid the carnage and chaos we read about, regular people are simply trying to live out their lives in peace.

I have to thank Louise for her comment because, don’ wanna brag,we (Iraqis) are really smart and strong people and yeah, most of us can speak English very good indeed.Take me for example,I’m 16 and I’ve just got a scholarship to America after getting a score of 62\70 in an English exam they gave me.

Like so many countries in the world, many natives in Iraq have learned to speak English.

Many countries in the world require learning to speak English to graduate.

Many countries in the world require two languages spoken fluently, in addition to their own to graduate.

But in many countries in the world, folks speak English in addition to their native language simply because they want to learn it and are smart enough to teach themselves.

Then there’s us. We not only are not required to learn another language, a lot of us cant even fluently speak our own!

Please tell me, do American universities teaching Engineering or Dentistry, or Medicine require the students speak Arabic?  Take me into the typical Middle Class home in America where mom and the kids can speak Arabic if an Iraqi journalist should happen by.

And the most disingenuous of all. No-one in our government ... the government that wanted to liberate these poor backward folks ... speaks Arabic. In fact I’ll bet few, if any can speak any foreign language. Ten words of Spanish doesn’t count.

The Iraqis generally must be an incredibly intelligent people. Nothing else can explain their patience in the face of such death and destruction. Their ability to try and stay cheerful and the bits of humor in their conversation. I suspect if they truly did have a democrat government the majority would be left leaning liberals.

Conservatives are the ones reverting back thousands of years to the “do as I say, not as I do” stone age, violent, humorless (and hopeless) mentality.
