Colbert on Journalistic Ethics and the Anna Nicole StoryPosted on Mar 2, 2007
“The Colbert Report” eats the press alive for its treatment of the Anna Nicole Smith story and total failure when it comes to covering, well, just about anything that actually matters, especially the Iraq war. Steven Colbert takes down John Gibson (the guy who brought us the “War on Christmas”), who recently accused Anderson Cooper of “news guy snobbery” for suggesting that the Iraq war is more important than the Smith story. Don’t blame the news media, blame the U.S. citizenry! We eat this stuff up. If news about Anna Nicole didn’t get ratings, or sell newspapers and magazines, they would not report it. It’s as simple as that. We love to worship celebrities in this country, and we love it when they screw up or take a fall. We have no one to blame for this media storm but ourselves.

Trash wins top popularity with both readers and listeners. It sells! Only a minority show concern for, or interest in, the serious problems facing all.

Colbert hit the nail on the head. God forbid the American news networks report on things that are actually newsworthy.
