Snickers Pulls Anti-Gay Super Bowl Ads

Snickers anti-gay commercial

UPDATE: Snickers parent company Mars has pulled the anti-homosexual ads it was hosting on its website—expressing regret and saying it will never air them again.

  • Earlier: Snickers aired an ad during the Super Bowl that featured two men reacting in violent disgust after accidentally kissing while eating a candy bar. While the ad may be a satirical dig at homophobes, the candy company appeared to affirm an anti-gay message on its website—where there were, until a few hours ago, videos of NFL players grimacing in similar disgust at the kiss. (Message to viewers: Manly men should be disgusted by the image of two men kissing.)

Here’s a way to get gay shows off your TV, Hate. It’s called the “off” button.

And BTW, I finally watched the commercial on the computer, seeing as how the Super Bowl was as unavailable here as the Aussie Rules Football Grand Final is in the U.S. Australians would find that ad bloody brilliant! I expect to see versions of it down here. After all, Oz is stuck with so many other retreads of American TV dreck such as “Australian Idol” and the local version of “Big Brother.” Or so I read in the newspapers. I’m a big fan of that button…

    Jenn,
Yes, there are more important issues, but this issue needs addressing, too.  By the way, what do you consider to be the more important issues, and just what are you doing about them?  And what do you mean by “get a life?” I work and have a social life, but I feel part of a full and enriched life is staying informed and getting involved in important issues, not just partying every night.

I think that we should all stand up and “B*tch”.
We let the “gay” people get away with all of there “b*tching” If they want it of they get it off, because they get offended “and we can’t do that”. Give me a break they need to stop b*tching. Other people like you and I need to stand up and take action. We let to many things go. All of them “Gay” shows offend me. I’m sick of “gay people” “Non believers” of getting there way all the time. People like me are going to start standing up. I’m going to start by getting some “gay” shows off the T.V.

I haven’t seen the Vikings commercial, so I can’t comment on it, but this commercial seemed to imply that if you don’t have enough Frequent Flier miles, you will end up among “primitive” people who will likely kill you.  This despite the fact that Europeans have caused many more deaths of indigenous peoples than vice versa.

Tim that is the Capitol One commercial! As far as the out rage of the commercial of Snickers go. I think some are over reacting. Its a commercial for crying out loud. Its acting. I would have done the commmercial if they asked me to do it. Why should they be punished for what they did. Thats like the lady getting Touch by an Angel off of T.V. because it used the word GOD...or the woman that got the Pledge of Allegiance taken out of our schools....we can’t say Christmas anymore because it has the word CHRIST in it. Well what about my right to say the word. Maybe we should make it where they can’t make films with cuss words anymore cause it offends some. Maybe we should make it where they can’t have sex scenes in movies. Maybe we should make it where they can’t have Will and Grace on t.v. cause it offends straight people. Suck it up and live life there is WAY to many IMPORTANT issues than fussing over OMG They offended me lets cause a riot.

OK...I am absolutely dumbfounded. I cannot believe people are upset by that commercial. The adverse reaction is a prime example of what I call “homophobia-phobia”. People are so scared of homophobia that they can’t see the commercial for what it was...a satyrical poke at the alpha-male! Actually, that is not true. I think the GLBTA (or whatever the hell it’s called) isn’t really offended by the commercial (I give them more credit for that...I believe their collective intelligence is higher than that of a clump of dirt). On the contrary...I believe they are just creating a controversy to draw more attention to their cause. Bravo! Very clever!

Come on people!  It is a TV add, nothing more.  It was funny.  Even my gay friends said it was funny.  They have more to worry about in life then their quest to make their lifestyle accepted throughout the world.  They find humor in the jokes, just like I find humor in blonde jokes or sexist jokes about females.  I even laugh at what the African Americans have to say about white people.  WHY DON’T YOU TRY LAUGHING AT YOUR SELF FOR ONCE!  We all have faults, if you want to worry about something, worry about our troops, the unfortunate kids in this world, or all the elderly people that are unable to care for themselves or being taken advantage of, or the freaks that want to kill Americans.  That is something to worry about.

Interesting to see how many comments a candy bar commercial draws—10 times the number of a non-Molly Ivins article. It must have been linked to some Christian or anti-gay website. Can any of you gay haters tell me which directed you to Truthdig? I hope you read other pieces on the site. You’ll educate yourselves.

Meanwhile, things like this make me ever gladder I emigrated to a country where no one gives a rat’s arse about who’s gay or who’s not. The kind of place where they have drag shows every Monday at the grungy pub down the street from me that hosts has bikeies and metal bands on other days of the week. And they all just get along. We felt the ad was humorous. We do not see where it was offensive to any group. It fact, we liked it so much, it is posted on our website, at http://www.friendsofgod.info, and will remain there. If it offends someone, they do not have to visit our site.
We have found that there are extremists in every group that will use political correctness to further their agenda. We doubt those that did the screaming are representative of the gay community as a whole, but rather a small percentage.
Mars needs to find their intestinal fortitude and go ahead and run the ad.

Who are the companies reacting on behalf of?  Are there no people with backbones anymore.  It’s like all the fools who do something stupid, or are just caught at it, and next thing they’re in rehab...for whatever their “problem” is.  Where are tough people who stand up, own it and say..."yeah, I said that” or “yeah, I did that” and not feel that they must explain every word and action. People are sick of it.  Is everyone so afraid that they can’t be forthright?  I would be far more willing to support someone who was honest, than someone who tries the to claim they have issues which rehab will all take care of.  Bull---we all think things, we all have thoughts, and nothing ever will change it.

IN FACT--more behavior like the fools at Snickers and others..is going to get them a nice fat boycott.  Lawyers don’t run this country yet--but with the fear of lawsuits like they are...one would think they do.  We had better watch out for this.  This is no way to live.  Men CAN flinch at seeing two men almost kiss and guess what...THAT’s NORMAL...homosexuality actually is not and no one is going to shove that crap down everyone’s throat.

I am for one not going to accept it.  I don’t need to eat Snickers bars either---they’re full of junk that’s bad for you.  See ya!

The point is this: WHY is it necessary to have two homophobic men attempting to eat the same candy bar in order to sell the damn product?

Yes, kids of all ages are watching the Stupid Bowl. Is this what they need to learn, that it is “disgusting” when two men “accidentally” kiss? Does anyone care about something called TOLERANCE for people who are not like we think they should be?! Perhaps it is amusing to some, but those individuals who fall for this crap are nothing more than victims of advertising appealing to the viewers basest instincts. Mars took the low road, no doubt about it. This is a perfect illustration of how degenerate American culture has become.

This is just another major company that has given into the pressure of the pink mafia.  The pink mafia has an agenda, “if we don’t like it, you better change it, or else”, and they sent this message to Mars, that’s why the commercial was pulled.

It’s a shame that major companies don’t have the backbone to stand up to their harrasement.  What these companies don’t understand is that they are protected by the first admendment.  Mars did not break any law.

Furthermore, this shows how the pink mafia is thin skinned, and how they look for something to be offended by.

Just because people don’t like immoral behavior of certain people in our society, doesn’t make them bad people, or “phobic” this or that.  In addition, the “phobic” rants can work both ways.

It’s the same when gay groups freaked over the car commercial with the fairy...no actual gays were offended by that ad, although unlike this one that one was actually funny.

These groups do not speak for the gay community, they just want to listen to themselves talk. The rest of us do have a sense of humor (most of us anyway)...funnier ending, that’s my only complaint.

As a gay man I disagree with the assumption that the snickers Super bowl as is anti-gay, in fact I was in a gay chat room chatting with all the other gay men when the ad came on, all of us thought it was funny and some thought it was hilarious. No matter what the subject there will be some knee jerk reactionaries who will try and find something wrong with it. Just like the media portrays Gays as ultra feminine males, most of us watch the Super bowl, play football, go hunting, watch Nascar and are not overly sensitive about who we are. My advice to Mars candy, is quit listening to the extremists, because those types exist in all aspects of life, and validate themselves by their ability to cause or “create” controversy where none exists. Not all gay men are idiots, most of us are pretty much like society as a whole. Myself for example, I am a conservative politically. Surprised? Don’t be.

But for those looking for a way to be offended, I note that the characters in the advert were the typical redneck hillbilly uneducated white-trash types that could be expected to “over react” to an inadvertent invasion of personal space. So what group is being insulted? Looks more like the message was “Laugh at these moronic hicks homophobia.” The implication being that sophisticated, intelligent people wouldn’t react that way.

Being a heterosexual male I found the commercial to be extremely funny, the same as I would any other commercials. The two heterosexual men have a normal reaction that is ingrained from nature. Nature of course has defects like any other production line and homosexuality is a defective trait. In other respects the homosexual is “normal” in most every other way, only he/she is missing a natural component; the attraction to the opposite sex, which promotes the creation of human beings and balance in life. This is not to say that homosexuality is good or bad. But if this is an acceptable lifestyle, a lifestyle to take over “normal” heterosexual activity, views, and belief systems then be prepared for a world that creates future generations through cloning and test tube babies. With the rabid political arm of the homosexual cause attacking the foundations of nature it may be sooner than we think that heterosexual coupling will be outlawed as an offensive act.

The example comparing the coupling of a black man and a white woman to the coupling of a gay couple has no basis. Men and women, it doesn’t matter the race, are a natural coupling who create balance as well as procreate as nature intended. There is no comparison there. Although it is true that racists don’t like this, it is still natural.

    Thank you for the discussion.

When will corporations stop running scared from homosexuals? They tiptoe around (no pun intended) worried that this commercial or that commercial might offend this measly 5% of the US population.  Mars has nothing to fear from gay men boycotting candybars. The incredible (girl-like) vanity of these “men” would never allow them to ingest an unhealthy candybar in the first place. They should concern themselves with the tubby guy who watches football on TV who is as we speak rolling his eyes is disgust at Mars’ wimpiness.

Political correctness has imposed it’s will on us again.  I’m hetrosexual.  If I accadentally kissed another man, I would be grossed out.  But having said that, if a homosexual wants to kiss someone of their same sex, that’s their business.  I’m sick of PC.

Scientific studies, my ass. How about political sensationalism. The problem in our society is arrogant homosexuals imposing their morality upon the rest of us.

Whatever “homophobia” is, it is a natural aversion to the unnatural and disordered state of affairs that homosexuals call normalcy.

I have to love how homosexual hide behind lies and self-deception to “prove” that homosexuality is normal or natural. Every study that has sided with the homosexual side of things has either been run by researchers with political biases or have suffered from statistical errors, logical fallacies, etc.

    Face it, homosexuality is irrational.

The ad by Mars Candy on SuperBowl Sunday may have been directed toward non-gay postures but just showing a man kissing a man regardless of the point of the ad’s final posture reflects homosexuality as a possible activity for people to engage in and certainly did more to promote the issue of homosexuality than against it as the homo’s are stating!  It was disgusting and should not have been aired and was certainly a “child abuse” scnerio since many chldren were “forced” to see it due to the entire matter being aired on a Sport program for all ages!!!  The heterosexual community was offended by it and not entertained at all.

When are gay people going to realize that heterosexuals are just born that way?  If a hetero man shows disgust at seeing two men kiss, maybe that’s just a natural reaction.  They cannot help it if they are born that way, it could be genetic. I know gay men who are disgusted by hetero kissing.  So what?  That’s their business.  Trying to change people’s innate reactions will meet with no success and will likely cause hatred, not alleviate it. Gays are almost getting as bad as the religious fanatics who try to control the public’s every thought and emotion.

“Anti-homosexual” is hyperbolic to the extreme.

Ten years ago, Jerry Fallwell would have attacked this ad as “promoting the homosexual agenda” because it featured two men kissing.

Now finding humor in two straight men having a “gay” moment is anti-homosexual?  Please.

More in the constant drumbeat of a campaign to re-educate normal people in precisely how to think about homosexuality? Sorry, folks, but revulsion to witnessing two men kissing is just as healthy as apple pie and is certain to stay that way. Homosexual activists may succeed in steam-rollering change in our legal structure and in subverting our institutions but they will not be able to change what we are at core. Like it or not, our reality is a situated not an elective one. Like global warming, at one point that truth will start pushing back.

Well, I guess we CAN fret over whether or not the ad was meant as satire or as barely disguised hatred of homosexuals, and not over whether or not advertising in general is intended to get all of us to purchase crap none of us actually needs.

Such superficial reactions to culture are what I’ve come to expect from both conservatives and liberals. Both parties are ever on the look-out for some minor slight. It almost seems as though what both most enjoy is becoming outraged, then engaging in elitist brow-beating. The only difference between them is that while conservatives are ever on the look-out for the moral degrading of society that might result from the baring of a female breast on TV, liberals are ever on the look-out for any hint of bigotry. Both miss the point, even if both are sometimes—though rarely—right to complain. I daresay, conservatives are more often right about these things than are liberals; although, both are given to conflating the cultural with the political. The conflation amounts to an American tragedy. These issues are usually termed, “wedge issues,” meaning that powers that be or who hope to be walk away laughing over the fact we took the bait once again.

Not that what is cultural doesn’t matter. It does. But if one’s eyes are trained on the fly buzzing just in front of ones face, one is less likely to notice the gorilla at ones back. It’s the gorilla that’s about to strike a blow to the back of your head such that you might go down for good.

The gorilla in the current case is one corporation that bought time to push their product (candy-drug) during the by now totally corporatized Super Bowl. The ad is about selling a product, and boys and girls, did it ever work! (Since I’m not a liberal who would, were he a liberal, also be duly obliged to believe the very idea of contact sports to be a terrible, violent thing, I happen to love professional football, indeed follow it pretty closely all season long. And I HATE that the game has become hardly more than an excuse to sell to me crap I don’t need, not to mention the fact the Super Bowl has become yet one more occasion for elistist get-togethers in pricey boxes, such that hardly any working-class, actually knowlegeable fan of the game of American football can afford to attend in his/her person!)

Neither conservatives nor liberals seem to have much to say about the gorilla most of the time, assuming they’ve even discovered the gorilla. Both prefer to focus on the buzzing fly. The National Football Leagaue itself garnered lots of attention/publicity during and after Ms. Jackson’s “wardrobe malfunction,” and one can bet the makers of Snickers are not unhappy either with free publicity. Course they pulled the ad, but that was merely the end-game. Makers of Snickers must indeed be snickering, having gotten both liberals and conservatives comin’ and goin’. Dear readers: liberals and conservatives, never underestimate the abilities of those who devise agit-prop. “Keep your eyes on the prize,” meaning on the goal of socio-economic justice for all. MLK didn’t say it, but he might have added—less eloquently—“Don’t let ‘em wedge ya.”

Yes, let’s teach that anything remotely homosexual in connotation should be met with violent aggression.

And let’s exploit rampant homophobia in the African-American community to do so.

And let’s do it during the SuperBowl, the epitomy of the ignorant, neanderthal mentality that rules heterosexual America.

... then you wonder why no one complained when Ronald Reagan refused to even say the word AIDS for over 4 years, when tens of thousands of gay men were already dead, with tens of thousands more dying.

... then you wonder why gay America is revolted by straight America, too.

I have to admit I’m puzzled by this commercial.

Sure, there have been scientific studies that indicate that homophobes have latent homosexual tendencies, but what does that have to do with candy bars?

Has anyone else besides me noticed that commercials nowadays seldom have anything to do with the quality of the products they’re selling?

Beer commercials give you no indications as to how good the beer in question tastes, and car commercials give you no indications as to how reliable the car in question is, and so on.

And this candy bar commercial is simply more of the same garbage, IMO.

If we were to use the same brilliant logic posted oh-so-defensively here, then people attracted to those of the same sex would “naturally” find mixed-sex kisses to be disgusting or distasteful as well. Hate to burst your I’m-not-one-of-THOSE-homophobes bubble, but that just isn’t the case. We all see those kisses every single day.

I thought that men who found kissing other men on the mouth distasteful were simply heterosexuals.  And I also thought that whatever reaction a person has inside his or her own head was their own business.

On the other hand, it’s refreshing to find out that there are no real, important issues to worry about anymore, and we can now discuss, with perfect seriousness, the social import of candy bar commercials.  What a relief to know that war, poverty, disease and famine have all been eradicated and we can now move on to important issues, like how candy bar commercials make certain homosexuals feel.

So...some straight men have a negative visceral reaction to two straight men accidently kissing. How is this offensive, exactly? It’s called human nature, last time I checked, and these videos are making fun of it. Nobody’s saying anyone should be disgusted. It’s simply an accurate portrayal of how these guys might react. How you react to something is entirely subjective and involuntary. So, what, it would be more politically correct if they supressed their natural reactions and jumped up and cheered instead?
