Bill O'Reilly and Sunsara Taylor

Wanna see Bill on the ropes? In this clip, the Fox News host goes head-to-head with WorldCantWait organizer (and sometimes Truthdig contributor) Sunsara Taylor. Unable (or unwilling) to counter her damning facts about the Iraq war, O’Reilly degenerates into name-calling.

O reilly asked for proof , she had none , so shut up and go away untill you have something that is verifiable, youre hurting our country by poisoning impressionable minds. The country does need change and you guys where when why or how. Youre an embaressment to the human race.

Hey John,
There is one BIG difference, Clinton’s relationship with Monica was consensual—-his phone calls were welcome; just like Condi and Bush.

O’Reilly’s assistant was repelled by his behavior, she thought he was disgusting and considered his behavior sexual harassment.

The right-wing proxys like O’Reiley, Hannity, Gallegher, Savage, and so forth were all put into place somewhere in between the “Republican Revolution” in the Senate and House and a couple of years before the seige on the White House.  The whole thing was orchestrated by the conservative think tanks and power players in Washington who knew that in order for their agenda to move forward they needed to shape public opinion.  Either by design or by coincidence, the divide and rule effects of their vitriolic and diabolical opration have played out at home and in Iraq.  But its kind of funny that as these control freaks start to see public opinion and events in reality breaking step with their delusional ideology and perverted world view, they simply fall apart, their smugness turns to anger & they let their true nature show.  They want to pummel whats around them either through, like O’Reiley, childish name calling and charcter assasinations, or “surges” of military might.  They are not stupid people, just evil of the most dangerous kind. They embrace selfishness as their first principle, greed as their second.  They have embraced the corruption of truth, and the supression of knowledge, and feel no empathy for the collateral damage resulting from the sociopathic pursuit of their own self interest. If the stock market were to crash and they lost their jobs and bank accounts, people like O’Reiley and his ilk, would be the smarmy cowards who’d steal an old woman’s blanket to keep himself warm, and take food out of a baby’s mouth because its every man for himself in this world, and self supercedes all considerations.  Look into their cold black hearts. THEY are ones who are truly sick & diseased in the soul.  Ya’ll know its true.

I’m not entirely convinced that Bill O’Reilly has both oars in the water. Like the rest of the TV windbags, he holds forth at length, sometimes not very intelligently, on this that and the other,
and you just kind of have to wonder sometimes.
I was brought up to understand and basically believe that people have the right to speak their minds. From what I’ve seen, Bill’s a better talker than a listener, more interested in kind of telling people what to think, than listening to what they’ve got to say. But, such is the modern miracle of television, some braying idiot in front of a TV camera, trying to get you to go along with what they say etc. Bill’s one of the Many, as it were, a long and distinguished list of people whose 15 minutes were probably up about, hmm, say, 3 months ago, but haven’t figured out that a lot of people have already changed channels…

Thank you for pointing out that not only do a vast majority of Americans not support the methods used by the Bush Administration, but the vast majority of the peoples of all the nations of the world do not support our governments position or methods.

I hope that the peoples of the world do not hold all Americans responsible for the foolish mistakes of our “Decider”. I do think that at some point the American people, must stop this. If we do, we can regain the respect of our international brothers and sisters.

My God, does anyone here still take O’Reilly seriously?  I wrote a pretty critique of him about a year ago at The Centrist Coalition, pointing out his overwhelming bias, his constant spinning of facts, ad hominem attacks, and refusal to stand by the comments that he so boldly makes:

The debates on O’Reilly’s television show (if you can really call them “debates") are complete shams. His repetoire of debating tactics include resorting to ad hominem attacks, slippery slope arguments, strawman arguments, guilt by association arguments, correlation implies causation arguments, appeal to emotion, appeal to authority, and when all else fails, flat out lying. But most annoying of all is the tactic he employs when his guest refuses to be bullied by him and calls O’Reilly out on the logical fallacies in his arguments: he simply accuses his interviewer of “spinning” or “dodging the issue”, as he has done many times before when debating people smarter than he is on a particular issue (see here and here and here).

O’Reilly takes complex issues in which there are several different points of view and reduces them to left versus right debates. His often spoken claim that anyone who disagrees with his point of view is welcome to come onto his show is simply untrue. On July 24, 2004, O’Reilly offered a challenge to anyone who was willing to debate him on the Patriot Act. O’Reilly, a harsh critic of civil libertarians, has been an unapologetic supporter of the Patriot Act since the day it was passed by a congress that never read the bill. Members of Michael Badnarik’s Libertarian Presidential Campaign REPEATEDLY contacted O’Reilly’s staff to arrange for Badnarik to go onto the show and debate O’Reilly. Although O’Reilly never did answer Badnarik’s challenge to debate him, Libertarian activist Dr. Dean Ahmad was scheduled to come on the show to debate O’Reilly on the Patriot Act; however, as part of the conditions for coming onto the show, Ahmad was instructed that he could not mention either the Libertarian Party or Badnarik. Ahmad refused to go onto the show under these conditions, and thus O’Reilly quickly found a replacement.

Three cheers to the heroic effort by Ms. Taylor for trying to penetrate the Great Wall of Faux News and get a morsel of truth to the ears of their misguided watchers.

Having said that, until the majority of Americans who agree with her position get off of their hands and join the protests of groups like World Can’t Wait, people like Bill-O will be able to call her a lunatic.

I participated in the World Can’t Wait protest day on Oct. 5th 2006 and unfortunately many of the people I encountered were 9/11 conspiracy theorists. When has the truth ever been a popularity contest?

I wonder why if it’s only a few people, as Mr. Bill asserts, did he need to bring her on and try to discredit her?

Maybe it’s because that somewhere inside himself, he has some doubts about this, and he’s trying to convince that part of himself that he’s right, to march unthinking behind the president.

President Bush is the closest thing to a dictator this country has ever had. And if Mr. Bill isn’t afraid of that then he’s just not paying attention.

According to the latest poll taken by Pollingpoint.com the group most likely to say withdraw all troops from Iraq immediately have Post-Graduate degrees (50%), with an almost identical value from those with less than a high-school education.

The same poll asked, “Will the Iraq war make US safer against future terrorist attacks?” 70.5 percent said no.

When asked, “How are things going overall for the U.S. in Iraq?” 80 percent of the Democrats and 60 percent of the Republicans said, “Very badly.” Only 20 percent of the Republicans said, “Very well.” None of the Democrats gave that response.

undefensible position.

Whay are Conservatives such inveterate liars?

Why are Conservatives so inherently dishonest?

Why do Conservatives HATE America’s values and freedoms so much?

The answer: Conservatives themselves are immoral WEAKLINGS, incapable of making ethical, or even adult, decisions in regard to politics and social issues.

It’s not really about politics at all with Conservatives--It is about the virulent, toxic pathology of Conservatism itself.

The part about this that I found most interesting is how far O’Reilly goes to try to put his words into the mouths of the “American people” and completely ignore the truth of the matter: that the majority of Americans oppose Bush and the war on Iraq.

It’s worth it to observe Sunsara Taylor’s responses to his baiting and perseverance at getting to the heart of the argument, laying out the facts on the Iraq war being a violation of international law by standards set at the Nuremberg trials, as well as the mass opposition to Bush and what he stands for. Props to World Can’t Wait for being out there to expose, oppose, and confront the complicit members of the US government about these issues and to call for impeachment to be put back on the table even as the so-called opposition party takes power.

I think it’s gonna take a lot more of this to make a change, and we need it as soon as possible!

O’Reilly was correct in arguing that we must retain the rule of law including a functioning House of Representatives which should not be shouted down by a mob. He did not, however, address Taylor’s legitimate concerns about the outrages committed by our government.
Taylor was correct in arguing that our government has done some pretty outrageous things but refused to listen to O’Reilly’s concerns.
And of course O’Reilly scored absolutely no ponts in calling Taylor a lunatic.  He simply demeaned himself in so doing.

Facts=left-wing conspiracy theory

What happens when you say to a right-wing Bush/war supporter that we still haven’t found WMD, that Iraq nor the rest of the world is any safer, that of the 3 countries listed by Cheney/Bush as the “axis of evil” 2 of them have nuclear weapons...yet we chose to invade the ONE that did not have any, that we are still awaiting the “concrete evidence” Bush promised in the days after 9/11 that would link Al-Qaeda to the attack (and by the way...are we still looking for Bin Laden?), that the agreement was never to bring democracy to Iraq and that we did not have a plan to win the peace 3 weeks before the invasion?

Choose the best answer:
A. “With all due respect, you are a lunatic”

C. “Are you saying Fox News is wrong?”
D. “there you go again liberal, listening to all them facts and data and truth about the whole thing...you gotta listen to Jesus and your heart.”
E. “You must not want America to win” (not necessary to establish what “win” signifies...simply pose the question and demand yes/no answer---keeping in mind this picture:

F. “Jesus told me that Sean Hannity and Bill O’Reilly are his reincarnated disciples...they will lead us to victory”
G. “Waa-Waa-Waa-Waa- I can’t hear what you’re saying...Waa-Waa-Waa-Waa.”
H. “You’re dead wrong buddy...country music tells me that ‘these colors don’t run’”
I. All of the above

This is NOT a time of independent thought and truth-seeking.  If you question anyone or anything, doggone it, you ain’t American.

Never in a million years did I think I would be living what I studied in history books: fascism.

I’d have thought FUX news would have added a laugh track to O’Reilly’s reality show long ago. Does anyone still take his tired act seriously other than himself.

If Sunsara Taylor is a lunatic for wanting peace, then Bill O’Reilly must be a pervert, when he uses PHONE SEX to harass his female staff.

Cooperation, consensus, conciliation and compromise are nothing but curse words to self styled “pundits,” particularly those like O’Reilly who are so consistently proven ill informed, illogical, and ill tempered.

As to the name calling, shouting, and bullying, that is either proof that that they have little personal confidence in the persuasiveness of their arguments or proof of their incompetence as interviewers.

Either way, why is anyone still listening to them?  How many times must listeners sample yellow snow to finally realize it is not for consumption?

Ms. Taylor is a class act. She kept her composure and made some damning points. Maybe I need to check out her group “of 50” and make it 51 loonies.

Bill O’Reilly and his views are not news. Stop giving him space. Maybe he’ll go away.

I don’t why Ms.Sunsara Taylor bothered to be on the Fox network. To expect a rational conversation with O’Reilly is quite insane.
Mr. O’Reilly is the reflection of the decay
that has gripped this nation.

I prefer this FDR Quote:

“The only sure bulwark of continuing liberty is a government strong enough to protect the interests of the people, and a people strong enough and well enough informed to maintain its sovereign control over the goverment. “

Bill, you are the lunatic, and you are rude. Do you think you are making your point by shouting down Suesara Taylor who makes some valid points which are suported by polls. The fact is the American people are against this war and do want our troops out. Congress can only do so much even if they have that goal. Constitutionally the president can keep our troops in Iraq indefinitely. Congress can withhold funds but that would hurt the troops or they could impeach Bush and be left with Cheney. The Peace activists of the world do have to shout so this congress hears them loud an clear.

It never ceases to amaze me just how many right-wing supporters seem to think that juvenile name-calling is equivalent to intellectual debate.  Whenever I see or hear someone resort to making derogatory remarks, I’m inevitably reminded of a quotation attributed to FDR to the effect that the first person to resort to offensive tactics such as physical force (or in this case verbal abuse) is the one who has lost the ability to think and is out of ideas.
