HOW CAN I BECOME A SUPPLIER TO THE PENTAGON? AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, IS IT MANDATORY THAT I HAVE A PRODUCT? I WOULD LOVE TO GET RICH QUICK. I THINK I’LL ASK JEEVES.

There’s been a lot said about the $200 hammers and $600 toilet seats from the 80’s, and it’s likely a lot of those costs were actually black projects that were funded out of the other $180 above what the hammers really cost; the reasons for the secret and dirty budgeting were twofold: firstly supposedly by funding that way projects could be maintained in secrecy, and secondly there would be no direct congressional oversight, because the projects were not directly funded by congress.
However dirty and inappropriate that was, it sure looks like these days it’s just brute profit that’s the game, rather than any dubious black ops program.

Unfortunately, when it comes to the Great American Military Complex, this really isn’t anything new. How different is it from those reports which came out in the 80’s about military spending at the Pentagon—such as spending a couple of hundred dollars each on hammers which you could probably get for one-tenth of the price down at the local hardware store?
